style="font-family: tahoma;">Zone Guide: Sorrowdusk Isle

By
Darkgolem

Sorrowdusk Isle is a dark, mysterious island found by taking passage on
the Eye of Kol Korran, a ship captained by a captain with the colorful
name of Kurvic the Hound.  To get passage, speak to Brother
Mirarshai
of the Silver Flame, who is found standing on top of a set of stairs in
the far north eastern portion of House Deneith.  Sorrowdusk isle
is
haunted by ogres, trolls, monstrous vermin and hell hounds.  The
northern portion of Sorrowdusk is home to an ancient temple dedicated
to the Dark Six, and cultists and their undead predecessors can be
found there.  The level range of this area is 4 through 11, though
it
is probably most doable by a group of 7 or 8th level adventurers.
Note
that the actual quests found here have a slightly higher range, with
the highest being level 10.

When traveling here, the specific defenses and spells you need are
mainly oriented toward combat.  In general you will be fighting
trolls
and ogres.  As such, you will want a high armor class, about high
30's,
and href="http://ddo.tentonhammer.com/index.php?module=ContentExpress&func=display&ceid=463">healing,
since ogres and trolls do a lot of damage with their rend
ability.  In addition, you will want fire resistance, because
there are
hell hounds, and some of the cultists use scorching ray.  Potions
purchased in the marketplace tent will do for this, if no caster is
available to use this spell.  Other than that, you will see
occasional
curses cast by some of the troll and ogre casters, and since there are
scorpions on this island, remove curse, href="http://ddo.tentonhammer.com/index.php?module=ContentExpress&func=display&ceid=492">neutralize
poison and/or some
sort of restoration spell.  In the cultist area of this island is
an
undead area.  There are many wights and at least 3 spectres here,
so
ghost touch, undead bane (or even better) disruption weapons are
handy.  Remember to beware the spectres level drain, the undead
fought
here are always in groups of at least 5.

The island can best be divided into three sections, the ogre section,
the troll section and finally the cult section.  When you arrive
on the
island from the Eye of Kol Korran, you are in the ogre section.
Directly to your north will be found 2 caves with many ogres (including
some named), a ogre quest npc named Bruku, Elder of the Grey Moon, and
some outdoor encounters with ogres.  An entrance to the Iron Mine
(where two quests are found) is located here too.  There is also a
section with many spider webs, and predictably, an encounter with some
spiders.

style="border: 2px solid ; width: 250px; height: 272px;" align="right">
size="-1">If you should turn east
(before Bruku) you will be heading toward the
troll section of the island.  Here you will immediately run into
some
hell hounds (the only part of the island with them) and these href="http://ddo.tentonhammer.com/index.php?module=ContentExpress&func=display&ceid=36">hell
hounds are found outside a ruin, and in a cave nearby.
Continuing
down
this pass, you run past a chokepoint (with a couple ogres and a troll),
and then are fully into the troll section of the island.  North of
the
chokepoint, obscured by bamboo, is an area with several scorpions,
including an occasional boss.  If instead you continue east past
the
choke point, there are 4 areas in the troll section.  One is a
branch
found past the choke point, leading north to a troll shrine.  A
named
shaman if rarely found here.  The first south branch in the
eastern
trail in this section leads to the entrance to the second 2 quests of
the series found here in Sorrowdusk, Grey Moons Den.  The second
north
branch leads to the trolls tunnels, which if followed to the end (there
are several trolls to fight in this tunnel) leads to the cult section
of the island.  Finally, at the end of the eastern trail in the
troll
section are the troll caves.

The cult section of the island, at the end of the troll tunnels,
leads
north to a shrine and clearing with an ogre elder, called Lord Hragg of
Greymoon.  From this clearing there is a south west branch which
travels first south, then west.  When it turns sharply west, there
is
an entrance to the third section of the quests found here in
Sorrowdusk, the Temple Outpost.  This is the beginning of the Cult
of
the Six series of quests (which is unlocked by doing the Grey Moon
quests in the other parts of the island).  In the west end of the
trail, it forks north and south.  North leads to crypts (no quests
here, but two named can be found, one outside, one inside of the
crypts).  South leads to the dreaded Temple of the Six, which
contains
the final portions of the cult of the Six quests.  These quests
enter
from different parts of this temple, which can be found by searching as
prompted by the quest giver, Lord Hragg.

One thing of note, since the level range of this area is so low, a high
level adventurer can bring a group of low (4th or so) level friends on
a tour of the area, getting a lot of experience quickly simply going to
all the explorer areas.  Make sure the high level adventurer can
protect the lowbie's, though.

Explorer Quests

style="font-weight: bold;">Find the ogre camp: 250 XP awarded

"By the wretched smell, these Ogres must have recently dined on the
flesh of fallen adventurers".  Located due north of the Eye of Kol
Korran, past Bruku.

Find Lord Grust's Cave: 250 XP
awarded

"This lair bears the markings of the Lord Grust's ogre clan."  A
cavern
with 7 ogres, including a rare encounter, Braxer, Ogre Commander (cr
8).  This is found by taking a western branch of the path that
reaches
the afformentioend ogre camp.

Find the spider's nest: 250 XP
awarded

"It appears the ogres have clearly avoided this spider-infested area of
Sorrowdusk." This area has 4 Brown Spiders (cr 1), 2 Darkfang Spiders
(cr 5), 1 Black Widow Spider (cr3).  Note there is an ogre ambush
near
the approach to this location, with 4 ogres coming out of the foliage
near here, including toward the rear of your party.  It is west of
Lord
Grust's cave.

Find the ogre cave: 250 XP
awarded

"By the handprints on the rock, this cave is clearly occupied by
ogres."  Contains 3 ogres, 3 ogre shaman, 1 ogre leader.
Sometimes the
ogre leader is substituted by the named rare encounter, Krumer (cr
9).
You can reach this cave by either heading west from the ogre camp and
then taking a north fork (before the spider's nest), or going north
from the ogre's camp and then taking a left (west) heading.

style="text-decoration: underline;">Find the iron mines: 250
XP awarded

"The lift here leads down to a long-abandoned mine, it is now home to
ogres."  This is the entrance to the Iron Mines quests.
North of the
ogre camp, follow the right forks of the trails.  A group of 3
ogres
are in the way along this trail.  The mines themselves have no
encounter immediately around them.

Discover the ancient ruins: 250
XP awarded

"The overgrown jungle does its best to obscure the caved-in ancient
ruins."   This area is found by heading on the eastern trail
before
Bruku, and note the hell hounds are hidden, and can surprise you.
You
need to advance up the ruins steps before you will get the explorer
location.  It has 5 hell hounds, (cr 3).

href="http://ddo.tentonhammer.com/modules.php?full=1&set_albumName=album110&id=Chokepoint&op=modload&name=Gallery&file=index&include=view_photo.php"> alt="The Chokepoint"
src="http://ddo.tentonhammer.com/files/gallery/albums/album110/Chokepoint.jpg"
style="border: 2px solid ; width: 250px; height: 174px;" align="right">Find
the hellhound den:
250 XP awarded

"Gnawed bones, charred earth, the stench of smoke... this is a den of
hellhounds."  This is a circular area, containing 5 hellhounds,
and
occasionally a Cr 9 rare named encounter, Teargon, the hellhound
herald.  This cave is a ring shape, so beware hellhounds
approaching
from your rear.

Find the scorpion swarm: 250
XP awarded

"Off the beaten path are the remains of fallen adventurers bested by
the deadly scorpion swarm."  This is hard to located unless you
know
where to look.  When you approach the chokepoint (heading into the
troll section past the ancient ruins), you will notice a ogre on a rock
outcropping on your left (north).  Once you defeat the ogres and
trolls
at the chokepoint, go to where this ogre is, and follow the curve of
the hill through bamboo shrubbery until you reach a clearing littered
with bones.  Here is found the scorpion swarm, consisting of
several cr
4 night scorpions, and occasionally Rhath the scorpion king (cr
8).
Rhath is pretty tough for his CR.  The scorpions, like all
scorpions,
are hidden and will tunnel around.  Rhath is a rare encounter, and
seems to appear very infrequently compared to other rare encounters on
Sorrowdusk.

Find the troll sacred place: 250
XP awarded

"These trolls are especially keen on keeping intruders out of their
sacred place."  There are 4 trolls here, including a troll
shaman.  The
troll shaman is occasionally replaced by the named rare encounter,
Nooza the troll shaman.  Nooze is cr 8 and another rare encounter
that
seems to spawn very infrequently.  Remember that 4 trolls all
using
rend are very dangerous, and unless you have healing and high armor
class, this location needs a lot of caution.  There is a shrine on
the
trail leading here.

Find Grey Moon's den: 250 XP
awarded

"To the south lies the entrance to the caves of the Grey Moon ogre
clan, driven out by trolls."  As you past the previously mentioned
choke point, you find a group of trolls burst from the foliage and
ambush you.  Just past this ambush on the right (south east) is a
large
flat outcropping of rock.  The entrance to the Grey Moon's den
(quest
location) is here, and this is an exploration point.  Note there
is a
small group of trolls, including a shaman, near this point.

style="font-family: tahoma;" size="-1"> style="font-family: tahoma;" size="-1">Find
the troll lair:
250 XP awarded

"Judging by the filth and blood, trolls must dwell within this
cave."
The troll cave is located at the end of the eastern trail in the troll
section.  Note there are some scorpions on the trail approaching
the
cave, and sometimes they take their time attacking.. you might miss
them and find them waiting for you when you exit the troll cave.
The
cave itself contains 3 trolls, a troll shaman, and a troll
chieftain.
Sometimes the troll chieftain is replaced with Kremen, troll chieftain,
a rare encounter.

Find the troll dungeon: 250 XP
awarded

"To the northwest is a tunnel leading to the top of the hill, where a
ruined temple lies. The stench of trolls wafts from within."  This
area
is found past the chokepoint and the entrance to Greymoon den, on a
northern branch of the eastern "troll section" path.  It leads to
the
cult section of the island.  Inside there are two rooms, both of
which
contain two trolls.. plus a troll chieftain and another troll in the
hallway itself.  Both rooms doors open as you pass through the
tunnel,
leading to an encounter with a total of 6 trolls, more or less at
once.   One of the trolls will occasionally be replaced with
a rare
encounter, Furley, troll chieftain (cr8).  This tunnel can be run
through without fighting if you wish, though you will get occasional
hits from trolls you run past, plus anyone who enters here later
without waiting for a reset will, of course, have to deal with your
leftovers.

Find the temple outpost: 250
XP awarded

"This mausoleum was recently excavated and converted into an outpost of
the Temple of the Six."  Once you exit from the troll tunnel
(dungeon),
a south/western trail passes here on the way to the main Cult of the
Six temple.  There is a small encounter (two trolls and a cultist)
en
route to this location.  The exit from the troll dungeon has a
shrine
and Lord Grust (a quest npc) nearby.

style="font-family: tahoma;" size="-1"> href="http://ddo.tentonhammer.com/modules.php?full=1&set_albumName=album110&id=Cult_of_Six_Temple&op=modload&name=Gallery&file=index&include=view_photo.php"> alt="Cult of Six Entrance"

style="border: 2px solid ; width: 250px; height: 174px;" align="left">
style="font-family: tahoma;" size="-1">Find
the wight lair:
250 XP awarded

"In this crypt, the priests of the Six buried their dead. From its
depths, a cold wind gusts."  If you pass the temple outpost and
head
north, you will reach this area.  The outside contains several
wights,
including a wight priest, and occasionally the tormented spectre
Thanolin, a rare encounter.  How Thanolin can do anything in
daylight
(spectres are supposed to be helpless in daylight) is unclear. Either
way, be cautious here.  The crypt entrance here leads to a
hallway.
Once side (without the altar) has tombs which (unsurprisingly) burst
open into a group of 5 wights.  The other side of the hallway
(with the
altar) has 3 spectres rise out of the ground as you reach it.
This
leads to a fight with the spectres, which, assuming you survive,
reveals the wight priest, Saate, another rare encounter.

style="font-family: tahoma;" size="-1"> style="font-family: tahoma;" size="-1">Find
the overgrown corridor:
250 XP awarded

"The jungle struggles to claim this corridor that obscures the gargoyle
ambush."  If you approach the Cult of the Six's temple, you have
to
pass through this outdoor corridor.  The gargoyles drop down from
above
to attack.  One of the gargoyles is occasionally Vermilo, the
ancient
gargoyle sentinel, a rare encounter.

style="font-family: tahoma;" size="-1"> style="font-family: tahoma;" size="-1">Find
Sorrowdusk Temple
: 250 XP awarded

"A foul miasma shrouds these ruins. The Temple of the Six lies dormant
no more..."  This is reached if you continue past the overgrown
corridor.  There are two warriors of the cult (who use searing
ray) and
a cultist of the six (or uses inflict wounds) here, but that's
it.  The
temple itself is impressive.  You must pass up the ramp in the
center of
the temple entrance about halfway to get the explorer point here.
