Runes of Magic: Get in Game Quicker!

Posted Thu, May 14, 2009 by Savanja

Frogster America, creators of popular free-to-play game Runes of Magic, have announced that they are moving away from the downloading method of getting players in game. Like several other games currently on the market, Frogster intends to utilize BitRaider technology to allow players to stream while they play, eliminating the need for a lengthy initial download.

Frogster notes that the download process won't be non-existent. Players will still need to download a limited amount of core files to get started but the use of BitRaider would significantly reduce download times getting interested players into the game faster. No set date was given for a release of this feature, but fans are told that they can expect this change in the next few weeks.

“The biggest barrier to even wider adoption of free-to-play online games is the time it takes from when you start downloading the game, to when you get in and play,” said Lars Koschin, CEO of Frogster America, Inc. “We understand that people want to be able to get into a game as quickly as possible, and that is why we are working with BitRaider to make Runes of Magic the first free-to-play title to use the technology. We believe that by reducing the download and installation process to less than 5 minutes on most systems, we’ll see a rapid increase in players coming to the game”
