Gated Communities - A Guide to Finding The Right Gaming Home

Posted Mon, Oct 19, 2009 by Medawky

The issue of communities is one that is often discussed by gamers in our genre of choice, as evidenced by posts both here on Ten Ton Hammer and abroad. Last week in Loading.... Community Disservice, Benjamin J. de la Durantaye pleaded to developers to bring back games that encouraged and fostered the strong communities that spawned so many of our gaming friendships and fond memories. While I agree 100% with his assertions, his piece got me to thinking that no matter what we wish for we ultimately have to play the games we are given and not the ones we wish we had. Join me, your humble servant Medawky, as I look to jump start the discussion of the best and worst communities out there and help guide players to that perfect fit of virtual real estate.

One of the common themes you will notice here is that most of the pros are also in some way the cons, as communities and our appreciation of them and interaction with them are largely tempered by perspective. What makes a community great to one player will doom it to another. And while it is true that you can never really go home again, there are plenty of great folks out there waiting for you to join them.
