Square Enix's president Yoichi Wada is making a bid to rival World of Warcraft (WoW) with their upcoming MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV (FFXIV). In a recent interview, Wada detailed the company's huge ambition to rival WoW. Few developers have made this claim and none have as of yet been able to dethrone the reigning MMOG king.

Asked if he thought Final Fantasy XIV was a serious rival to World of Warcraft’s throne, Wada said “yes, but the flipside is that they are a tough competition.”

Wada then went on to explain the subscription and microtransaction models that will be used in FFXIV to offer players certain items the company feels they want to buy and how the game will be much more friendly and less group oriented than its predecessor Final Fantasy XI.
