Star Trek Online takes a step away from the stereotypical fantasy classes found in MMOGs because it’s like in space and stuff, but that doesn’t mean we can’t find the traditional roles of tank, healer and damage dealer. Each of the careers, Engineering, Science and Tactical correspond well to the archetypical roles. Each of the careers offers specializations in professions as well which really allow a player flexibility and customization.

Similar to our standards, scientists can go a couple of different directions with their profession, mostly divided between practical applications and theory. For those wanting to go hands-on, scientists can go into more of a true healing role (Doctor) or a true scientist (disruptive technologies). The researcher straddles the line between aiding those around him/her and using special skills to disorient the enemies.
