StarCraft II players received some good news during the BlizzCon Opening Ceremony earlier today. Blizzard CEO Mike Morhaime announced that the team has been developing new maps for StarCraft II . The new games were detailed later in the evening at a StarCraft II Custom Map Panel. I've posted a brief summary of the four new maps below.

Left 2 Die: Designed by Richard Khoo, Left 2 Die is obviously inspired by Left 4 Dead, a zombie team shooter developed by Valve. The map is a variation of the "Outbreak" map in which players will cooperate against invading hordes of zombies.

Aiur Chef: Designed by Jason Huck, Aiur Chef is an eight player competitive collection games in which players compete to gather ingredients to create certain food dishes. Players get skills that will let them hinder each other during gameplay, but the overall goal is to collect ingredients.

Players will get to wear the hat of zealot warrior chefs skilled in the arts of cooking and killing in this round-based mini-game. Every round of Aiur Chef will feature a theme ingredient, and players will need to fight (sometimes to the death) to collect components scattered around the map to make a variety of succulent meals. Each dish created using the theme ingredient will award points, and the player with most points at the end of all three rounds will be named Executor Chef, culinary guru of the entire Koprulu Sector.

Blizzard DotA: Inspired by the StarCraft map Aeon of Strife and the Warcraft III Defense of the Ancients mod, Blizzard DotA pits two opposing armies against each other and places 5 players on each team to control a hero to help tip the battle in their side's favor. To make things more interesting, the devs are planning to add classic Blizzard characters from their various titles to the mod like Warcraft's Sylvanas.

The maps will be made available to players for free on Battle.net at a later date. You can learn more about the new maps on the StarCraft II website.
