As if we needed confirmation that the last six months has not been as good to Blizzard as they had hoped with the release of World of Warcraft: Cataclysm, the company announced subscriber numbers have dropped by 600,000 subscribers, bringing the total number down to a "pre-Cataclysm level" of 11.4 million.

The announcement came as part of the Q1 2011 conference call with Activision Blizzard that was held yesterday. Blizzard stressed their "plan to continue delivering new content to further energize our community" (that’s new content patches and expansions, to you and me) as well as hinting at an external beta for Diablo III by Q3 (that's between July 1st and September 30th). They added they’re also pushing for a release by the end of the year, even if they don’t yet have a firm date. Here’s hoping for more info come BlizzCon and not just about the next WoW expansion
