The largest applause during the Northrend discussion came when the development team unveiled Northrend's capital city. Remember that city near Tarren Mills that you could never enter because it was in a huge bubble? That city, Dalaran, has been floated to Northrend by the Kirin Tor as they fight for their lives against the Blue Dragonflight. Dalaran [Video] will float above the zone, but there will be access both from the ground and the air.
If you didn't click earlier you can still see the new zones. We have seven videos posted for your viewing pleasure.
Players will be driven through the story-arc by lore that surrounds the newest lead villain, who is of course, Arthas.
"Arthas Menethil, Crown Prince of Lordaeron and Knight of the Silver Hand, was the son of King Terenas Menethil II and heir to the throne. He was trained as a paladin by Uther the Lightbringer, and had a romantic friendship with the sorceress Jaina Proudmoore. But despite his promising beginning, Arthas became one of the most powerful and evil beings Azeroth would ever experience. He is voiced by Justin Gross." -WoWWiki.com
Northrend will be larger than Outland in size and scope. |
The level cap has also been raised, just as it was with Outland. This time the high-water mark will be level 80.
The most talked about and most enthusiastically received aspect of the new expansion had to be the first hero class in the game, the Death Knight, which unlike the other classes will need to be unlocked by completing a quest comparable to the Warlock epic mount quest. Once players reach level 80 they will be able to unlock the new class, which will take up a separate character slot and begin its journey at a high level, probably 55+. The quest itself, and thus the class are available to any race and any class in the game giving everyone the chance to become a Death Knight. [Video]
Death Knights won't be using any pansy shields either. Big bladed two-hand weapons are the name of the game. Whether they are throwing out the melee dps or tanking, the first hero class in the game looks like it will be a fan favourite.
Unlike Warriors who rely on rage or Paladins who rely on mana, the Death Knight will use a Rune Resource System. Three different types of runes, Blood, Frost and Unholy, can be carved into the character's weapon. The class abilities and spells will depend on what runes the player chooses to carve into his blade. The runes will work on a cooldown system which can be modified by talents and abilities. PvP is a staple of players who have reached the max level limit and the expansion aims at giving them some new reasons to beat up their friends. Siege weapons, destructible buildings, a new battleground and new world PvP in the Lake Wintergrasp zone [Video] are going to be included in Wrath of the Lich King. The new battleground will be a 15 vs. 15 sized battlefield with the average game taking between 30 and 40 minutes to play.
Siege weapons, new creatures, items, character customization (haircuts), and the ability to inscribe spells and items rounded out the changes we can expect when Wrath of the Lich King goes live.
Other tidbits of note include an increased leveling rate for levels 1-60, a similar item progression and leveling time to Burning Crusade, and the use of flying mounts in Northrend. Blizzard will be releasing more teasers as they ramp up to release. Keep checking back! We'll have the latest on Wrath of the Lich King as information becomes available.
