You never get a second chance to make a first impression goes an old saying, and rarely is it proved wrong. Dungeons and Dragons Online has done just that however with the switch in revenue model away from subscriptions to a free-to-play with microtrasnaction platform. Not content to simply rest on its newfound success, the team at Turbine is cranking out adventure packs to satisfy the newly resurgent player base. One of the newest to enter the fray is Gianthold, a pack intended for players in the level 13-14 range that features ten adventures, fourty-five quests and a raid.

Brian “Zombie Columbus” posts his final SoM Skirmish diary.
    06_LOTRO Mirkword Epic Story

Turbine has been busy the last few weeks pumping out numerous developer diaries for The Lord of the Rings Online on the road to Siege of Mirkwood's (SoM) launch, but none have been busier than Brian “Zombie Columbus” who wraps up his series of developer diaries on the SoM Skirmish system this week. The final diary rounds out the series with a quick summary and touches on the FAQ, while giving a shout out to all the helping hands that made it possible.

Skirmishes are short, repeatable instances that can be joined from most places in the world.  They have a number of randomized elements in them to keep gameplay fresh, as well as the ability to scale to different levels and group sizes.  Skirmishes are military fights against the enemy, allowing you to bring a custom trained Soldier to assist you.

Free server transfers offered to Phoenix Throne and Dark Crag.
    witch elf fighting

Warhammer Online will be losing two more servers soon as community manager Andy Belford announced the news on the Warhammer Herald recently. The two latest victim servers will be Dark Crag and Phoenix Throne, but players will be offered free server transfers starting on Wednesday, December 2nd. Phoenix Throne will be able to transfer to Iron Rock or the Badlands server, while Dark Crag will will have the option of transferring to Gorfang or Volkmar server. To try and make the transaction a little less painful a 20% bonus to experience and renown will be enabled during the weeks following the transfers.

And so, it is after careful evaluation and much discussion that we are announcing free character transfers off of the Dark Crag and Phoenix Throne servers. At this time we plan to enable these free character transfers on Wednesday, December 2nd.

Remember--Magic Boost doesn't have any effect on heals folks, but clerics do rely on magic boost to solo and do damage. Let us roll sometimes on those mage accessories!

WoW named in class action suit.
    lawsuit.jpg

In the gaming industry it's not uncommon to find yourself at the bad end of a lawsuit and Activision Blizzard is the latest company to find themselves faced with allegations. Gamespot has recently acquired new civil suit papers that names Activision Blizzard as the latest target of disgruntled gamer Erik Estavillo who alleges Blizzard's World of Warcraft of having a "harmful virtual environment" with "sneaky and deceitful practices." Estavillo also takes issue with the game's subscription rate of $14.99, calling it the highest of any MMOG. Obviously ignoring the fact that it is the current industry standard.

He first takes exception to the game's $14.99 monthly subscription fee, calling it the highest of any MMORPG. He contends the fee is aggravated by the game requiring players to travel great distances at a slow walking or running pace, with fast travel options like teleportation stones and mounts only available to gamers who rise to an advanced level or purchase the game's expansion packs.

That's not Estavillo's only issue with the game. He also expresses his displeasure with having to travel at a slow pace and called the death mechanics an unnecessary part of the game. Lucky he didn't get the old EverQuest death treatment, but on the issue of EverQuest, Estavillo does cite it in his suit, bringing up the 2001 suicide of a man who played the game. The plaintiff goes on to state he suffers from many of the same mental ailments and doesn't want to end up like the 2001 suicide player. The plaintiff has also subpoenaed a pair of celebrities to testify on his behalf with actress Wynona Ryder and song writer and singer Martin Lee Gore.

Estavillo has already filed suits against Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo alleging various things relating to each company's console such as causing undue stress and the violation of First Amendment Rights. The case against Sony was subsequently dismissed, but the battle rages on as the gamer seeks $1 million in punitive damages from Activision Blizzard and a court order forcing them to address the problems alleged in the suit.

Performance Showdown - Vista vs. Windows 7 in MMO Gaming
Machail tests Pulse Top 10 MMOs in Vista and Windows 7

Is Windows 7 really that much better than Windows Vista? Take a look at our test results to see for yourself. We put both operating systems to the test with nine MMO games to see which contender would come out on top. The results were a little surprising, perhaps even to the most die-hard techy. Find out if it's time for you to upgrade.

From the article:

"I booted a whole bunch of MMOGs on my PC when it was running Vista (64-bit) and I took simple frame rate samples from 4 resolutions... Each test was run [in a busy area] for precisely 60 seconds. I recorded the minimum FPS (frames per second), the maximum, and the average. I then repeated the test three times in each resolution to help eliminate any sort of anomalies. Then I upgraded the exact same PC with Windows 7."

As always, Premium Members get 72 hours of exclusive access to our feature article each week. Click here to check out Performance Showdown - Vista vs. Windows 7 in MMO Gaming, and thanks for being a Premium Member!

We promised rewards for excellent Members Only MMOG Reviews, and it's time to put our prizes where our collective mouth is. The way this works is pretty simple. I booted a whole bunch of MMOGs on my PC when it was running Vista (64-bit) and I took simple frame rate samples from 4 resolutions: 1024x768 windowed; 1024x768 full screen; 1920x1200 windowed; and 1920x1200 full screen. Each test was run for precisely 60 seconds. I recorded the minimum FPS (frames per second), the maximum, and the average. I then repeated the test three times in each resolution to help eliminate any sort of anomalies. Then I upgraded the exact same PC with Windows 7.

Nightwing joins the DC Universe Online lineup.
    Nightwing 08

DC Universe Online's roster has been expanded a bit further with the unveiling of new screenshots of Nightwing. Dick Grayson, formerly known as Robin, the sidekick to Batman, is Nightwing, a member of the Teen Titans, able combatant, and new member of the DC Universe Online Lineup.

What happens when Dick Grayson, The Boy Wonder, becomes a man and decides to leave his mentor to take on new adventures? He takes on the name Nightwing and joins forces with the Teen Titans against criminals of the night. Second only to those of Batman, Nightwing's fighting skills and detective abilities are a definite advantage for a hero who also has gas pellets, smoke capsules, and an acetylene torch.

Wearing a bulletproof and fire-resistant costume that is wired with a single-shot taser, Nightwing can easily incapacitate any attacker. His weapons of choice to combat foes, including the H.I.V.E. (Hierarchy of International Vengeance and Extermination), are twin, shatterproof-polymer Escrima sticks. Keep in mind that you get to play alongside or against Nightwing in DC Universe™ Online, so choose your own armaments wisely.

Everything you need to know to join the crusade.
    jousting1.jpg

The Argent Tournament was formed in front of Icecrown Citadel to train and select the warriors for the upcoming battle in World of Warcraft. It's also a place to do daily quests, gain reputation/achievements, and much more. We now have a complete guide to the tournament that's short, sweet, and gives you all you need to know to get Crusader in no time and start buying heirlooms and special tabards. While you're here, don't forget we do have guides to the Trial of the Champion and Trial of the Crusader instances if you need help on those too.

You will begin on your jousting mount (you can choose any mount out there; they are unlocked as you become champions with the other factions). After you mount up, travel to the location of the joust (The Valiant jousting area is beside each tent and you can challenge the opposing faction’s Valiants if you so wish while the Champion jousting area is on the south side).

The Argent Tournament awaits those who are ready to fight.

4Story gets a reworking in this latest free-to-play
    Gates-of-Andaron-logo.jpg
It has been said that you never get a second chance to make a first impression, but Korean developer Zemi Interactive is sure going to try as they rework their popular game 4Story into Gates of Andaron for German publisher Gameforge. Perhaps the names were changed to protect the innocent but it's a case of deja-vu all over again in this microtransaction driven MMOG. Join Medawky this week as he dives into the game to see what makes it tick.

Venturing into the game I found it fairly easy to navigate as it featured the standard controls common to most MMOGs as well as the ability to switch to a click to move format if you prefer. Quest NPC’s are easily identifiable on both the mini and full-sized maps, with the standard exclamation and question marks pasted to the tops of their heads. While the underpinnings of the game are fairly solid, gameplay is where the cracks in the game’s armor start to show. Combat is bland and unimpressive, with most abilities feeling about as interesting as a Jennifer Lopez-Ben Affleck romantic comedy.
