Reloading... A Good Con

Posted Fri, Oct 21, 2011 by Boomjack

Blizzcon is under way and, coincidentally, becomes our topic for today's Reloading...
Welcome back!  This is the 98th attempt at this column.

Welcome back!

This is the 98th edition of this column.

98 is the country calling code for Iran.  98 is the highest jersey number allowed in the NHL. It also happens to be the normal body temperature of an adult human.

I’m John Hoskin and I’ll be your MMOG guide today.

“DPS is Science.  Healing is Art.  Tanking is Strategy.” -- Unknown

Everyone can use a feel good moment to start the day.   Let’s go with this…

Thanks for taking some time out of your day to read this column.  I truly appreciate it.    If you happen to use Twitter, you can follow me @BoomjackTTH.   I rarely use Facebook, but I do occasionally post gaming related tidbits on Google+ where you can find me under my real moniker John Hoskin.

BlizzCon starts today.  It’s a great show for anyone fortunate enough to be able to attend.  I have made the trip a couple of times and it is definitely a fan show rather than a press event.  If you go to enjoy the games and the people who play them then you will be rewarded.   If you can’t go, but still want to watch the goings-on, a live feed is offered at the official Blizzcon.com site.   We have some BlizzCon theorycrafting for you after the jump.

The impact of this show on the community couldn’t be more evident than on Twitter where my TweetDeck is filled with people explaining their “evening out” which will consist of sitting at home and watching BlizzCon via the live feed.  Games are a much more powerful medium than most non-gamers believe.

David has spent some time theorycrafting the next big World of Warcraft announcement.   I’m not convinced there will be a big WoW announcement this year.    With Diablo 3 and the next StarCraft 2 expansion on the distant horizon those games might take center stage.    If so, it’s an interesting view into the state of the game that so many of us play.

If you are looking forward to Star Wars: The Old Republic then you probably have your eye on playing a Jedi.   Fortunately for you, Greg has posted a Jedi Knight Class Preview.   I am excited about the prospects of being able to play a Jedi, but frankly, I imagine so is everyone else, so expect me to play another class, at least until I can’t take not be a Jedi any longer.   As class previews go, this is a superb article.  I don’t write that very often, so go check it out.

In other news, Free Realms has passed the 20 million registration mark.   I remember seeing this title before it launched and thinking that with the right push this could be a hit.   It never took off like it should have, but apparently is still going strong.

On average I receive 20-50 responses via email to any of my questions in this column.  When I asked what independent websites that you visited I received none.  Not a one!    Let’s give it another go.   Other than TenTonHammer.com, what independent game sites do you frequent or perhaps even visit infrequently?  Let me know!

That’s it for today.  Thanks again for reading and as always, may your dreams be big and your worries be small. “
