  • Ten Ton Hammer's "First Glimpse" Review Gives Hero Online 3 Out Of 5

    Ten Ton Hammer reviews the latest MMORPG to arrive on the scene. Hero Online, released on Monday (7/31/2006) is free to download and free to play, and who doesn't like free? Developer NetGame has a very novel approach to making money in the increasingly jaded fantasy MMORPG market, unfortunately there's little else innovative about the Hero Online grind. We played the first fifth of Hero Online's 100 levels, and our "first glimpse" review gives the game 3 out of 5 hammers

    "In a slight bow to newbie-friendliness, Ngame added tips for beginners that appear at intervals in your chat window. Unfortunately, this consists of mostly keybinding information. Aside from that and what you can discern from the zone-wide chatter, there's literally no handholding. Quests are few and far between; I received a grand total of five quests in the first ten levels. Mostly mundane single-step quests are, however, doled out at intervals; a message scrolls your HUD that "[NPC] might have work for you" when you level up."

  • What Does Launch Day Bring?

    MMORPG.com has taken time today to jump into the launch day fun. They have posted a review of the game that is packed with screenshots and impressions.

    Hero Online is a Korean Free to Play game that has been ported over for the US market. Typical of many of its lineage, the client is free and there are no monthly fees to play. Although what you pay for differs between games, each developer’s business model is essentially the same – you pay for what you get. Additional inventory space, special weapons and suits of armor perhaps, additional classes or characters, additional mounts, skills… the list is endless… but we don’t know yet, what will be available.

    A game like Hero Online can hardly be compared to paid models such as EverQuestII or World of WarCraft but must be compared to others of the same genre, or judged on its own merit. Gamers entering this game seeking a world, content and game play similar to EverQuestII or World of WarCraft will only have themselves to blame if they are disappointed.

  • Hit or Miss?

    GamingGroove has taken time to review Dungeon and Dragons Online. See if they think that this is a hit or miss int he world of MMOs...

    As stated before, it was only a matter of time before Dungeons and Dragons followed suit. At the beginning of 2006 came the arrival of Dungeons & Dragons Online: Stormreach. Developed by Turbine, this game would offer players a virtual world governed by the official 3rd Edition rules (actually 3.5) while keeping in tune with most other MMOG services. We waited patiently for the game's release, assuming it would topple the likes of EverQuest II and the overwhelmingly popular World of Warcraft. However, Turbine's offering gathered mixed reviews, so we waited to see how the game would pan out after a few months. Remember how Anarchy Online floundered in its beginning, driving off players with numerous bugs and intolerable latency? We wanted to make sure that didn't happen with DDO.

    In GameSpy's ongoing feature, State of the Game, we got an indepth look at Star Wars Galaxies.

    Despite its problems, many fans found enjoyment in areas of the game that did work. But in the time since, the game has seemed unable to catch a break: for every improvement, the game seemed to suffer another disaster.   • How is Guild Wars Factions Shaping Up?

    ActionTrip.com has taken the time to give Guild Wars: Factions a spin and let us know what they think. Check out this review and the great screenshots as well...

    Given the rules of the cutthroat world of business, do you think that people at NCSoft like and respect the guys from Blizzard? Wait, let me rephrase that: I have to assume they surely do not *like* them, but do you think that feelings render into this equation at all, or is it all just politics devoid of any emotions? Guild Wars, unlike some other releases from NCSoft, doesn't follow the typical MMO model, but it still plays like a MMO game in many regards. So given the phenomenal success of WOW, and the relatively overlapping target audience of these two games, isn't it logical to assume that NCSoft management is thinking something along the lines of: "…if only we didn't have those bastards breathing down our necks every step of the way…" To be honest with you, that's exactly what I'd be thinking. But I'm a petty, petty soul.

  • Gameplay Reviews DDO

    How does the parent of all MMOs translate into an it's own online adventure? Keep reading to find out what Gameplay thinks...

    Turbine really got itself into a bit of a challenge this time. How do you translate the direct ancestor of every video game RPG into an MMORPG? One original game which was a social experience to begin with, and thus a very direct father of the MMORPG genre? Simple, they throw away pretty much -every- preconceived notion of what an MMORPG is supposed to be and start from scratch, using the D&D rules as a framework to bolster its design.

    So let's get a few points set first: there is no endless kill-grinding, there is no crafting, and there aren't even any cohesive outdoor regions that you will travel to get from territory to territory. Just like playing D&D with friends, this is about getting together in a tavern, plotting the adventure to undertake and go for it. No experience gained unless the adventure is completed. It's a bit of a shock in this genre which is overpopulated with games that consist of killing rats, pigs, and small birds so you can proceed to kill bigger rats, bigger pigs, and bigger birds until you can kill a meaner, bigger rat, a bigger, meaner pig, and hopefully raid a dragon in a month or two. Oh yea, don't expect to craft either. It's a surprising omission, since even if D&D isn't big on it, there ARE rules for crafting in the DM guide and players could take advantage of them. Maybe they'll add them later, but so far I do not fault DDO for not including them as the experience, as is right now, is quite focused, and works as a tremendous asset of the game.

  • Logitech G15 Gaming Keyboard...Fantastic or Not So Nice?

    Macros. In MMOs, long the domain of esoteric min/max-ers and gold farming bottomfeeders. Establishing itself as a serious macroing platform with 54 programmable keys, the Logitech G15 gaming keyboard also boasts an onboard LCD, media controls, backlighting, and a few other surprises. Too much keyboard? Hell yea! Join Ethec as he plugs in and kicks the tires of Logitech's macroing monstrosity, and looks at the differences between cheating and macroing in MMORPGs along the way.

    "All that to say this: on many levels, it's important not to expect too much from the LCD. It's a nifty thought and definitely has its place, but gameplay-wise it suffers from the same marginal utility the LCD on the Sega Dreamcast controllers withered in back in the day. Your eyes can really only keep track of one screen at a time, why shouldn't they stay on the screen that really counts? Granted, I've only seen the LCD working in handful (World of Warcraft, Civ IV, Unreal) of the lackluster number of currently supported games, but if you're used to getting ammo counts, stat, or compass info from the actual game screen, the G15 offers little reason to change your habits. Add to this the aforementioned qualms devs have for giving too much support to peripherals, and you've got yourself a bona fide fluff feature."

  • Factions earns an 8.5 out of 10 from Cnet

    Citing well-balanced classes and pristine graphics, Cnet gives Guild Wars a must-play rating. This, despite complaints about the clunky chat interface, a frail storyline, and felt inability to smoothly team-up with other players.

    Having both the original game and Factions installed adds still more layers of complexity, by letting you experience the content from the respective continents in new ways, with characters who originated on the other side. Like in the first game, just the sheer number of things to see and do in Guild Wars Factions is quite amazing, and there are enough different styles of gameplay available that you'll more than likely find aspects you really enjoy and get hooked on. In some ways this is an imposing, complicated game, but since it doesn't punish you for experimenting (apart from the possibility of a tongue-lashing from fellow players), and since it doesn't saddle you with monthly fees, it's really quite hard to resist.

  • Revenge of the nerds...

    The folks at PC Advisor put on their horn-rimmed glasses to scope out the standalone Factions expansion to last year's popular subscription-free MMO, Guild Wars. Turns out they liked everything except the interface and ineffective AI henchmen.

    For most quests you'll need to recruit other players to assist you. Unfortunately, the interface and chat system makes it difficult to make meaningful contact with fellow gamers, with the result that you'll spend a lot of time standing around just trying to form a group. You can recruit computer-controlled characters, but groups formed in this way are dull and not terribly effective.

  • Seed Takes a Refreshing Departure From Standard MMOs

    A review of this newly released MMO was posted at GameZone. Michael Lafferty took time to write up his thoughts as he tried Seed out.

    Seed, from Runestone, is not your typical online game. First of all, there are no wide-open vistas and environments that will have players traversing the world. The game centers within the colonizing structure that is known as Da Vinci. Secondly, there is no combat, no mobs that you kill to gain experience and level up. Instead Seed focuses on maintaining the colony platform, fixing various and persistent equipment breaks, leveling up engineering skills and then, if you so choose, engaging in the politics within the colony.

    Of course, this requires a different mindset on the part of the gamer. It also, in many ways, requires more creativity.
