  • Fansite Gets Development Update

Startrek-online.net was given an exclusive development update! Keep reading to learn where things stand withthis upcoming game.

It’s been a long time (too long) since I’ve given the community an update on how things are going for the Star Trek Online team and with today marking Trek’s 40th (happy birthday Trek!), I thought it would be a great time to do some catching up. I’d like to start off by giving everyone a sense of what to expect going forward. Star Trek Online was announced about a year before development began in earnest. And as a result, we had some catching up to do in order to reassure the fans that we were treating the license with respect and demonstrate our commitment to developing a high quality game. We’ve also really enjoyed the opportunity to share some of our design ideas with the community and get feedback. As you might imagine, our first year of development involved a lot of brainstorming on paper while the foundation for our new client engine and toolset was being built. It was a perfect time for us to bounce ideas out to the community. And the feedback we received had a very valuable effect on our decisions and thought process.

Get clicking to learn more! Are you planning to play Star Trek Online? Are things developing in the way you hope? Let us know in the forums right here at Ten Ton Hammer!

  • I know it's been a while since GDC but it's better late than never aye? I had a chance to sit with Daron Stinnett as well as Glen Dahlgren at the conference. We had a good talk about Perpetual's upcoming Star Trek Online. All of you trekkies out there rejoice! We're going to get a game done right!

They wouldn’t give up the central conflict of the game. No amount of begging and pleading on my part would reveal that secret. However, they had plenty of other goodies to give me. As you may already know, STO will be taking place after The Next Generation. The licensing deal with CBS (who now owns the Star Trek License) spans the entire Star Trek Library. They have the ability to use material from a broad range of sources extending from Star Trek (the series) to Deep Space 9 to Voyager. They’ve even gone as far as giving Perpetual scripts, footage, and production notes to enable them to create a solid Intellectual Property (or "IP" - an industry buzzword for the rights to the entire body of work, including patents and business methods, surrounding an idea that has commercial value, e.g. a game, motion picture, television series, etc.). While they haven’t been in touch with writers yet, they have been able to work with production designers for the shows. These meetings should allow the Perpetual team to integrate some really great content into the game.

  • What do you get when you mix a Star Trek Online MMO with news of the Galaxy class Starships? A squealing 12 year old boy. Or a *cough* 31 *cough* girl. A New Developer Blog is up on the official Star Trek Online site. This one revolves around the new starships.

Glen Dahlgren here, Design Director on STO, and it's my pleasure to give you a peek into another aspect of our design process.

Because of our recent press release, you may already be aware that we're working with yet another experienced Star Trek designer: Andrew Probert, the guy who designed the Enterprise D, Next Gen's original Starship. But you're certainly not familiar with the intimate details of HOW he is contributing - and that's what I'd like to discuss.

While we're very excited to have the opportunity to create brand-new ships and technology (and we will be doing so), one of our goals for STO is to bring alive the iconic people, things, and places from Star Trek's shows and movies - that with which you're already very familiar. An obvious target is the Galaxy-class Starship, the anchor of TNG. Who doesn't want to wander those halls, walk around that bridge, or explore the holodeck? And how about visiting some of the places that the show only hinted at, like the Cetacean (dolphin) quarters or the immense double-barreled main computer core?

Enterprise D! *shudders and faints dead away from excitement*

  • You cannot go wrong when you have a TNG designer on your side!

As the Senior Illustrator for the first season of Star Trek: The Next Generation, Probert designed new spacecraft ranging from the Ferengi Marauder and the Romulan warbird to the Galaxy-class U.S.S Enterprise NCC-1701-D, including both its main and battle bridges. Probert will be working with Perpetual to update the interior layout of the Galaxy-class, creating new deck layouts that realize never-before-seen locations within the massive city-sized starships. Initial blueprints and concept art by Probert are now available at the game's development site with additional material to be released in the coming months.

Set twenty years after the most recent movie, Star Trek: Nemesis, Star Trek Online will be the next step for the Star Trek universe, advancing the timeline and technology into a new era of exploration and discovery. Just as Star Trek: The Next Generation updated the ships and uniforms of the original series, Star Trek Online will bring new uniforms, new equipment, and new starships to Starfleet and its foes.

You can read more about this on the Star Trek Online Official Website. Things are really ramping up for this game and I'm really really stoked!

  • For a minute I panicked. I had that horrid clenching of the stomach and felt like I may just spew. However, Game Still On! Gamasutra reports the details

Though not specifically mentioned, it appears that Bethesda’s acquisition of the license will have no effect on Perpetual Entertainment’s currently in development Star Trek Online massively multiplayer role-playing game. Many multiformat media licensors, such as Marvel, have treated massively multiplayer online games as a separate issue in the past.

When I read that I breathed a sigh of relief. That's all that matters. *comes down off of her ledge*
