  • Daniel Miller Chats With Jeff "Ethec" Woleslagle

Daniel Miller talks about the present and future of Ryzom Ring, including integration of Ryzom Ring into the Saga of Ryzom core experience, and what it means to make an MMORPG in the cultural paradise called Paris, France.

"Nevrax wants Ryzom Ring to become as well known for its content-designing power as for its simplicity. "We've designed Ryzom Ring to be simple enough for my mother to use," Miller quipped. As far as R2's power, Miller emphasized that the Ring is incredibly robust. Echoing Milko Berset's comments during the earlier preview, he pointed out that player testers reportedly "hadn't yet found the limit" of where their imagination could take them while designing their own adventures."

  • Entering the Ring - How Nevrax's Ryzom Ring addon turns players into designers and more!

You've heard the hype, now it's time to see how Ryzom Ring, the free addon to Saga of Ryzom that allows players to design their own adventures and run them DM style, all comes together. Join Ten Ton Hammer as Nevrax leads us through a eye-opening map to mob to mission overview of how to create our own Ryzom adventures!

"Building your own MMO adventure, but the ability to control the experience for other players is what really makes Ryzom Ring revolutionary. If you're lucky enough to make the creator's list of players who have Dungeon Master (DM) privileges, you get to kill your friends. And heal and resurrect them. Or respawn mobs, add or subtract hitpoints, or (if the designer has added the appropriate mobs and DM-only triggers) spawn bots and NPCs to change the experience on the fly. Teleport around or use your DM super-speed to transport your invisible godlike presence around. For some added fun, speak to players through the mouths of any NPC. It's all up to you as the DM; which hearkens back to the good ol' days (and nights, and days) of pen and paper RPGs."

  • Ryzom Ring Impressions, Plus an Interview with Nevrax's Milko Berset and Sebastien Daniel

Our resident Ryzom Ring expert Messiah shares his impressions of Ryzom Ring after experiencing Nevrax's live event last week in Paris, France and speaking at length with Ryzom Director Milko Berset and Marketing Head Sebastien Daniel.

"While I am mainly interested in Ryzom Ring as a method to once again enjoy level design as I used to in FPS and RTS games, there are at least two other big options that it opens up. The first is that it will bring very real, very live RPG elements into MMORPGs. This is something that I think will draw many dungeon masters and game masters into the game, and many players as well. Instead of planning and playing a real life RPG in a room someplace, Ryzom Ring allows you to do almost the exact same thing in a visual manner online with friends all over the world.

The other option that Ryzom Ring will allow is a very simple to use system to make video game based movies or machinima. The tools are all there to take and essentially program in a movie with this tool! From that point you just have to record it and put a soundtrack into it to have your own high-quality movie. With the popularity of video game movies and the lengths that many players of guilds go through to stage and record exactly what they want, this could become a huge attraction to Ryzom Ring, even for people that never planned to play the game!"

  • Messiah Shares His Ryzom Ring Experiences

Our very own staff writer Messiah got a chance to try out the Ryzom Ring scenario development add-on for Ryzom Ring prior to last week's live event in Paris, France. The verdict: even well before launch, Messiah was impressed at Ryzom Ring's power and ease of use. Follow along as he creates his own world with just a few mouse clicks!

"Ryzom Ring" is an expansion to an existing game: The Saga of Ryzom. Before E3 2006 I had only vaguely heard of Ryzom, however while there I was lucky enough to meet with one of the developers to get a hands on preview of the game and gain access to a beta account to give it a once over. Having been sucked into the addiction that is World of Warcraft since its release, Ryzom has been a welcome change..."

  • Build a Guild Page...

On the official site for the Saga of Ryzom, there were a few changes this week. The first is that they have added a new guild section to the site.

We've just opened a new section on the website, for the guilds. You can add here your own page presenting your guild, with pictures, links etc.

Also, they have added more servers to help with the download of the game for those who are taking advantage of the free trial offer!

Since the release of the Ruins of Silan and the new Free Trial offer, the client installer is being downloaded several thousand times every day, filling up the bandwidth we dedicated for the client download. We have thus added extra mirror servers and upgraded the total bandwidth from 200 Mbps to 600 Mbps - you should now be able to download the game at full speed again. :-)

  • Ten Ton Hammer Gets Ryzomized: Seeing Saga of Ryzom On Site In The City of Lights

We in North America know surprisingly little about Saga of Ryzom, a game which has quite a dedicated fanbase in Europe. Game developer Nevrax held a press junket this week in Paris, France to gain some well-deserved publicity for the game. Before we serve the main course of previews and interviews dedicated to the free "Ring of Ryzom" scenario editor to be released this summer, Ethec discusses what's already new and innovative about Saga of Ryzom and finds a surprising amount of local Parisian flavor in the game.

"While it may not achieve the notoreity given to the Napoleonic Code, Voltaire's Candide, or frilly toothpicks, Saga of Ryzom is a world-class MMO that Paris can be proud of. All in all, the game looks solid enough on its own, but the Ring of Ryzom scenario editor (if all goes as planned) will be an industry first. Not to mention the first breath of fresh air online gaming will take this summer, as a July 2006 release is expected for Ring of Ryzom." ">Keep reading to find out more about Saga of Ryzom.

  • It's better to be a newb...

Nevrax has just completed a large patch to Saga of Ryzom that implements a new player zone called the "Ruins of Silan". The zone is meant to make it much easier for players to get into and learn the game.

And now, a few words about the content of this patch.

    • The New Player Experience (NPE) called "Ruins of Silan", which is the major addition of this patch
    • The new interface
    • Emotes, which will take into account the player characters' gender
    • A new melee & range combat stanza
    • The Outpost crafting tool adding an energy bonus of +20, which effect will be improved
    • Jewels magic protections, whose effects against mobs' magical critical hits should work properly
    • Actions on guild members: the issue which refrained from kicking/promoting members should be fixed
    • The missile of the launcher, which should be displayed correctly
    • Landmarks, to allow you to add landmarks at the precise location of your character
    • The access to the inventory of your mektoubs when you craft, which will be limitated to the stables where they rest.
    • The position of team members on the map, which should be more accurate
    • The "undetermined" fame status, to make it work as intended with the merchants: as long as you remain "undetermined", fames higher than 50 are considered as being 50 and not more
    • The healing possibilities in PvP areas (the arena and GvG regions), where you should be able to heal your team members again.
    • The safe zones in GvG areas (Nexus, Lands of Umbra): someone inside a safe zone shouldn't be able to attack another character anymore
    • Texts in the compass: the texts displayed below will be entirely readable.
    • A new team command: /invite playername, enabling remote invitation
    • German, French and English texts, which should be cleaner
    • Some collision optimisation all over Atys, especially in Zoraï landscape
    • A few new chat commands and a new channel.

You can find the complete patch notes at the Ryzom Ring official site.

With the newbie changes and the innovative new Ryzom Ring scenario editor coming out in the near future, it's worth giving the game a looksee. If you're interest is piqued, it just so happens that there's a 7 day free Ryzom trial.
