  • The Rest of the GDC Age of Conan Preview!

    We've been hard at work listening to our voice recorders and transcribing the events that occurred at our GDC Age of Conan demo, and now the rest of the extensive Age of Conan preview is ready to read. Rather than preparing a video or giving us a demonstration on a closed server, Jorgen Tharaldsen, Conan's Product Director, and Designer Thor Bjorno loaded a character onto a running server where a few hundred closed beta testers were churning through the developed content, pointing out any errors or inconsistencies with the gameplay. Over the span of two days, a pair of sessions, and three hours of actual discussions, Jorgen and I hashed out some things that hadn't been extensively discussed on the website. The rest of the preview includes a look at AI, PvP, seige warfare, quests, and more!

    "You can't just charge into the camp," Jorgen said as he walked his character around. "If you do, the guards at the front of the camp will alert those in the back, spawning more guards and bringing them all down upon you at once. You can achieve your goal this way, but there are other ways to achieve this goal: You can poison the food source, you can use the day night cycle to your advantage, you can even set their tents on fire. We made the camps unpredictable, so players won't be able to simply saunter in and do the same thing their friend just did."

  • Thoughts on Age of Conan From GDC

    MMORPG.com updated their site today with their thoughts on the upcoming Age of Conan. They had a chance to get a look at it at GDC.

    There is a very strong interface in the game for players to build social networks. The system to find groups or guilds is easily accessible in the game. Instead of players having to type out in chat, using the social interface allows players to form and shape the community in the game itself.

  • A Look at Age of Conan

    GameZone has updated their site over the weekend with a new preview of Age of Conan.

    During the demonstration, a Stygian zone was revealed as well as a quest. In the quest, a villager was dismayed because he had just lost his wife.

    “It is the will of the gods,” was the Stygian player avatar’s retort. But the villager pleads and the quest in undertaken to find the alligator that ate the wife, slay the beast, cut it open and bring the remains of the woman back to the villager.

  • Exclusive Preview: Barbarians at the Gates!

    Robert E. Howard would be proud if he knew just how passionate Funcom was about their upcoming title, Age of Conan. Just a few months from launch, Funcom was providing press with several chances to see the game in action throughout GDC. Ten Ton Hammer was able to go to two of these sessions and have provided you with an extensive and thorough GDC preview of the upcoming game. In this first installment of the preview, Cody "Micajah" Bye takes a look at magic, a dark and corrupt art that is prominent in the Age of Conan.

    If the character takes the path of darkness too far, they may not be able to return. When a character is corrupted to a certain point, he will be plunged into a hell or a place a lot like it. Once this has happened, the character is forced to fight his way back from the depths in order to truly restore life back to his character.

    During GDC today we got another look at Age of Conan, the upcoming fantasy MMORPG from developer Funcom that takes place in the universe made famous by Robert E. Howard's novels. One thing we got to see in this build that we didn't see at CES is the character customization screen.

    MMORPG.com: What is your job at Funcom? How did you get your foot in the door?

    Jason Stone: My job at Funcom seems to be constantly changing, originally I was hired to be a content designer and work on Monsters. Monsters as being defined as monster creation in the monster tool and creation of AI (Artificial Intelligence) designs.

    What occurs in the single-player section of the game, and when that's completed is it a traditional MMORPG that we move into?

    Erling Ellingsen: The single-player feature has changed much since we started designing Age of Conan, mostly due to feedback from the testers in the closed beta. Originally it was designed to be an entire single-player game before you stepped into the massive world, but we've scaled this down somewhat because people generally wanted to be able to interact with other players much sooner.

    CVG.com has posted the first installment of an interview that have recently done with Erling Ellingson, the project manager for the upcoming Age of Conan.

    Blizzard's all-dominating World of Warcraft is set to face its most serious challenge yet in 2007, a number of new 'big name' MMORPGs preparing to enter the market before the year is out.

    Product manger Erling Ellingsen reveals that on top of creating a compelling MMORPG experience Funcom is aiming to incorporate cross-platform adventuring into Age of Conan. So, while the PC version will release first this October, PC gamers and Xbox 360 gamers could eventually be able to buddy-up and compare oiled muscly pectorals.

    Time to brush off your German (or cheat and click for the english version!). Onlinewelten has posted an interview with Product Manager Erling Ellingsen.

    "Cheating is always a tough theme. What is your strategy against cheaters?

    We have a zero tolerance towards cheaters. In the past, with our other MMO Anarchy Online, we’ve struck down on them harshly. People who break such rules will be banned. On the other side, our developers are working hard on creating systems that will minimize the possibilities of cheating. We’re being proactive about this, trying to beat the cheaters to it."

  • New Levels of Escapism in Pvp?

    Stratics takes a look at the upcoming Age of Conan and shares their thoughts with us.

    My favorite idea of their pvp’ing is drunken brawling. I’m really looking forward to getting sloshed and throwing some punches at random people. This type of pvp brings a new level of escapism that I’m personally looking forward to.
