City of Heroes was one of the first MMOGs to venture away from the standard fantasy path. Instead of swords and shields, City of Heroes focused on super heroes and heroines, their powers, and what a city full of super beings would be like. Players take on the roles of these super heroes, fighting crime and defending Paragon City from the wrath of aliens, madmen, kingpins, and more! Many free expansions (Issues) have been released for City of Heroes, and one full expansion-sequel, City of Villains, has already hit store shelves.

City of Heroes, players experience on of the most customizable and easy to use character generators in the MMOG marketplace. Not only can they create a unique costume, but they can also select from a variety of major and minor powers. Nearly everything is available to potential super heroes, so no expense has been spared. Wings and capes of various sizes and shapes have also been added CoH as the months have progressed, so a player can emulate almost any character from any comic book he or she has ever read.

Paragon Studios announced in June 2011 that CoH adopt a free-to-play subscription hybrid option with the launch of the Freedom update.

  • Over thirteen free expansions, City of Heroes and City of Villains have become a breath of plastic-sleeved four-color air to a market far too accustomed to orcs and elves, and with Issue 14, CoH...

  • Issue 9 "Breakthrough" Preview

KillerBetties weighs in with their thoughts on the upcoming Issue 9 for City of Heroes!

In order to use the invention system you'll need both salvage and influence. Salvage you get from beating down enemies and it comes in one of three variations: Common, Uncommon, and Rare. Obviously, Common will drop the most and be your default salvage, with Uncommon showing up a little less frequently under all that, and Rare being the ultimate salvage since it will be the hardest of all to find

  • GDC: City Of Heroes/Villains Issue 9 Impressions

FiringSquad has posted their impressions of the upcoming Issue 9 for the City of Heroes / City of Villains game.

In addition to the invention feature, Issue 9 will also contain the games' version of an auction house where players will be able to buy and sell items to other players. In keeping with the games' fictional moral tone, City of Heroes players can only trade with fellow City of Heroes players and the same is true for City of Villains players.

  • Lead designer of upcoming free content download for City of Heroes fills GameShark in on what's next for this popular MMORPG.

GameShark.com has posted a look at the upcoming Issue 9 for City of Heroes.

The Lord Recluse Strike Force, which made it into Issue 7, was our way of getting Hamidon-level Enhancements into the hands of the Villains for City of Villains. We needed something that was difficult, and Hamidon-level difficult, but we didn’t want to just regurgitate Hamidon…we wanted something cool. We wanted something where you fought the signature Heroes of the City of Heroes franchise.

  • Laura Genender looks at the veteran rewards due to hit CoH/V tomorrow

MMORPG.com has posted a preview of the veteran rewards for City of Heroes and City of Villians due to go live tomorrow.

Introduced with the "Issue 8: To Protect and Serve" expansion to City of Heroes and City of Villains, Cryptic Studios will be implementing a Veteran Award system that rewards players based on how long they've had an activated account for the duo of games. These rewards range from costume pieces to special powers to extra base items, including a lot of novelty items that City of Heroes and Villains fans have been anticipating since the opening of the game.

    That's right, we're talking wings.

  • I'm omnipotent, and I wear yellow tights!
IGN has posted a preview of City of Heroes: The Forest of Dread. Bruce Campbell, mistaking "Dread" for "Dead" rushing to Paragon City and announced:

" As any former or continuing players are probably aware, developer Cryptic Studios is serious about continuing to push big updates through into City of Heroes as long as the game has legs. So far, it's legs look to be running strong so it's no real surprise that another update will be hitting the game soon… as in "next week" soon. We had a chance to check out The Forest of Dread update recently in order to get a look at the new zone, powers sets, villains, and more. "

You can read the entire City of Heroes: The Forest of Dread at IGN.
