  • The not-so-secret secrets.
GamingGuides.com has posted a lengthy article titled, "Secrets of Massively Multiplayer Farming". I'm not sure these were secrets to anyone who has played World of Warcraft, but the article was an interesting read.

    "
In the past several months, I’ve become friendly with a number of the professional farmers on my server. I had no special motive in doing so; I certainly didn’t befriend them so that I could study them. Nonetheless, during the course of our teaming and chatting together, I gained glimpses into their lifestyles and learned things that I’ve found to be interesting and that I would like to share. The odds are that if you have access to the venue where this document is being published, you’ll find them interesting too. "

  • Solar Systems Overload
CCP couples an announcement about an extensive server upgrade with a plea for in-game corporations to move their operations out of several heavily trafficked systems. This from the official site, and no, I wouldn't kid you about the source:

" An Oursulaert native went on record, saying "They better fix the *bleep* *bleep* *bleep* jump *bleep* gates before I *bleep**bleep**bleep* and then some." He then shouted something incomprehensible at nearby Customs Officials, subtle foam beginning to assemble at the corners of his mouth as he finally became able to jump to the next system.

Similar stories have been reported in systems like Nonni, Sobaseki, Inoue and Isaziwa. Wasona Binge reported that rush hour traffic was approaching "Clusterfu*bleeep* proportions." "

And now in a nutshell, friends, you see why EVE isn't a mainstream MMO. It's growing though, and I'll confess: it has me hooked! Read more about EVE Online's growth pains at the Official Site.

  • The new patch is here, and with it the moans and cries of 4 million players.
The new World of Warcraft Patch is out and about, weighing in at a mere 252 MB and calling itself version 1.8. Most notable of the many changes are the revamped Silithus zone for 60+ players, the Four Dragons outdoor raid zone and the talent revamp for druids. We asked Jet Li if he had ever met the Four Dragons, or even stayed at a four seasons, but he abruptly chopped us in the windpipe and mumbled:

" The arid sands of Silithus are shifting. Something is awakening beyond the wall to the south... Aid the Druids of the Cenarion Circle as they delve into the mysteries of the desert. Seek answers behind the Twilight Hammer's presence. Discover more about the alien creatures known as the Silithid as you explore their hives. Many new endeavors await the high-level adventurer! "

  • "We got spirit, yes we do... we got spirit, we'll gank you!"
The "spirit" of World of Warcraft PvP is the topic of this Op/Ed piece. If you've ever wanted to know more about how player vs. player action works in the worlds most popular first-person MMO, and get a tour of PvP efforts in MMOs to date, take a looksee.

" In conclusion, is the World of Warcraft PvP system perfect? No, there are plenty of loop holes to exploit. Is the game fun? Yes, like any other online game you get out what you put in. If you are disappointed in the Battlegrounds, try going to an area and starting trouble, create your own fights, or join a guild that randomly PvPs all the time. I hope we see more improvements from Blizzard in the future with respect to rankings and Battleground availability. "

  • How do you say "party" in Icelandic?
CCP has a lot in store for gamers at EVEfest later this month, Oct. 20-22. For a mere US$675, you too can get the complete package from Icelandair. Oh to be rich and speak a Scandanavian language or two. I've heard that Iceland's beautiful, not to mention an important NATO stronghold against the commies.

"The 2004 EVEfest was a success and we aim to do far better this year. We have presentations from the leads at CCP, we have the pre-launch of our upcoming expansion, code-named Kali, technical sessions, panel discussions, the EVE Championship, and we have added developer roundtables and and the first glimpse of EVE Trading Card Game! • Not one, not two, not three, but FOUR DRAGONS.
The next World of Warcraft Patch will include an outdoor raid zone that features four dragons. They're green. They're mean. They'll make you scream.

"There is a disturbance at the Great Trees. A new threat menaces these
secluded areas found in Ashenvale, Duskwood, Feralas, and Hinterlands.
Four great guardians of the Green Dragonflight have arrived from the
Dream, but these once-proud protectors now seek only destruction and
death. Take arms with your fellows and march to these hidden groves --
only you can defend Azeroth from the corruption they bring."

  • Patch Notes - Go Druids.
Blizzard has put the 1.8 patch for World of Warcraft live on their public Test Server. This is your opportunity to check it out first-hand and then rush to the official forums to complain and moan about it. Druids get a huge revamp that is sure to have 50% of the community screaming that they need a nerf and the other 50% screaming that they need to get buffed. Hey, at least druids can shapeshift into a giant chicken now. I await the KFC instance where they are dipped in a secret recipe of spices and fried for the rest of the raid.

" The test realm patch notes only apply to features that exist on the public test realms. We provide these patch notes to players who wish to know what features and changes exist in the test environment in order to more effectively test these features. "

  • Re-enact your second favorite Jabba the Hutt scene.
That's right: Jabba's 8-player transport skiff (seen alongside the sailbarge in Episode V) is the first half of your bonus for preordering the SWG November expansion "Trials of Obi-Wan." Not as cool, but also a reward: a giant "lava flea" that you can ride around. I wonder if "lava tick" mothers feel compelled to check their offspring for Jedi when they come in from playing outside.

" Pre-Order Trials of Obi-Wan and you will get the exclusive 8-Player Transport Skiff as you bonus gift included with the digital download. Players who pre-order will receive in-game:

    • The Transport Skiff: An exclusive 8-player vehicle, the only 8-player vehicle and the fastest multiplayer vehicle in the galaxy, as seen below. Players will be given one per account and this item is not tradable. You will want to get this awesome new skiff! ...
    • The Lava Flea: This unique Mustafarian Mount as shown below. Players will be given one per account and this item is tradable!
    • Players who order the Trials of Obi-Wan will also receive 3 additional vehicle storage slots in their datapad.
    • Plus, there is another very cool Purchase Bonus Item, all players who purchase the Trials of Obi-Wan will also receive a brand new style of player house that can also be used as a Guild Hall that we will be revealing soon! You will be totally stunned when you see it!"
