  • A quick look at The Burning Crusade, without the religious fervour and piles of burning lumber.
1UP has posted a preview of the World of Warcraft expansion, The Burning Crusade. The preview focuses on the new Horde race, the Blood Elves. Now all the men hiding their female side can play a more attractive female character. There is your Halloween scare.

" The first thing you notice about Sunstrider Isle is that it feels a lot like an Alliance town. There's lots of foliage and animals and green and blue and so on, unlike Horde starting areas which are liberally covered with black and brown. Also, because BlizzCon is the only place to check out the expansion, there were a ton of blood elf characters -- so much that in any quest that involves killing things, the time it takes for a creature to respawn is longer than usual due to everyone else killing the same creatures you're going after. The gameworld was set to night time, which made Sunstider Isle look a bit like the Night Elf regions (and not as color crazy as the screenshots in our news story earlier today), but, just as the Horde finally has a "hot female" race to play as, it now has a picturesque little zone to hang out in as well. "

  • Dirty deeds done dirt cheap, especially if you own City of Heroes.
GameSpot has posted a City of Villains interview featuring Jack Emmert focusing on his final thoughts as the game ships.

" City of Villains, the stand-alone follow-up to last year's online role-playing game City of Heroes, will arrive in stores next week. And as its name suggests, this is a game in which you'll be able to create your own supervillain, whom you can adventure online with while living a life of crime, which is diametrically opposed to all the heroic deeds you did in City of Heroes. On the eve of the game's arrival, we caught up with Jack Emmert, creative director of City of Villains, for some final thoughts on the game. "

  • Is that a boss in your pocket, or are you glad to see me? (that never gets old... or does it?)
Funcom's Craig Morrison describes the unique "pocket boss" system found in the "Shadowlands" expansion of Anarchy Online. Really, who doesn't want a boss mob they can spawn anywhere?

The new Shadowlands quests grant faction as rewards for their successful completion as well as pattern parts for our unique 'pocket boss' system, so that players can collect the parts to be able to spawn a special boss mob at their own convenience. Spawning and defeating this boss mob grants further faction rewards allowing players to gain Shadowknowledge (exp) and faction at the same time, something they previously had to do separately.

  • Guild Wars joins in on the Halloween ruckus.
Arena.net waxes poetic with the announcement of a new schmaltzy, yet fun Halloween quest for players of Guild Wars:

When the moon rises high over Lion's Arch
And the wind moans through the most hollow of eves

    Shutter your homes this holiday
    Steer clear of the shadows
For on this night, they say,

A long-addled spirit returns from the grave
    Pumpkin upon his head,
A wicked deed within his heart
A pint of witch's brew for all those who misbehave

Heed these words, all ye who dare enter here:
Bind your souls to the mortal realm
For the regent of madness draws near.

When they say "regent of madness," is Tom Cruise making a guest appearance? Read through the Guild Wars Halloween update notes to find out!

  • Mars attacks...
The devs hosted one last hurrah for City of Villains testers before closing beta: a full-scale alien invasion. Gamecloud has the details:

The final battle for the Rogue Islands was fierce but ultimately fatal for the bad guys as the beta for City of Villains finally came to an end. With the game being the only major new MMORPG title releasing this fall we expect that it will be a huge seller both for fans of the original City of Heroes and new fans who have been waiting for the chance to play as the bad guy. The game itself is scheduled to ship to stores on Oct. 31 but players who pre-ordered the game will be able to access City of Villains a few days earlier.

  • Lexus With Lasers.
Worthplaying has posted some new Auto Assault screenshots on their site. I for one am all for car-mounted weapons.

"Combine fast-paced vehicular combat with high-tech, futuristic weaponry and hundreds of intense skills and you get Auto Assault – a unique departure from traditional Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games (MMORPGs). Hop in your own customized cars, semis, and motorcycles and prepare to fight the mutated creatures and bandits of Auto Assault's post-apocalyptic world. Battle other players both in arenas and in epic race vs. race wars for control of the regions in a devastated Earth. Auto Assault uses the power of the Havok physics engine to let you make insane jumps, send obstacles flying and even blast bridges, buildings, fences and trees with your car-mounted rockets. Anything you can hit, you can destroy! "

  • More tights than an IBM board meeting.
Boomtown has posted some fantastic shots of the City of Villains character screens. Strangely absent is the Martha Stewart character screen.

" There are just four days left before City of Villains goes live. As you already know, character customisation is a key feature of Cryptic Studios' epic and today NCsoft Europe has images to illustrate just some of the options that will be available to players on 31st October. "
