Ultima Online (often abbreviated as "UO") is an MMORPG set on the fictional world of Sosaria. Brittania (as Sosaria is now called) offers many adventures for those seeking action, as well as activities for those with a calmer sense of action. You can be the hero that slays the dragon that threatens the lives of citizens or you can simply be the blacksmith who crafts the armor that the hero wears.

Ultima Online is recognized as one of the first online roleplaying games. It's expansion is the Kingdom Reborn expansion, redesigned the game's graphics and user interface, as well as added new content such as a new tutorial. The game continues to evolve and attract subscribers despite its age. The latest expansion, Stygian Abyss, allows players to play as Gargoyles and opens up the caverns and catacombs to Ultima Online’s largest dungeon yet.

  • Ultima Online Announces 8th Expansion; Complete Graphical Revamp "Kingdom Reborn" Will Be Free to Playerbase

Ten Ton Hammer reports live from Fairfax, VA as EA Mythic announces Ultima Online's eighth expansion: "Stygian Abyss" and gives word that the "Kingdom Reborn" graphical revamp will be free for all players. Is there new life for this decade-old MMO?

"Seven expansions and five continents later, EA Mythic showed members of the press exactly what they have in mind for Ultima Online over the next year: a cost-free complete graphical revamp titled "Kingdom Reborn", and a newly announced expansion - "Stygian Abyss" - featuring gargoyles as a fully featured playable race for the first time. As Producer Aaron Cohen, described the news: "The game that started it all is about to start again." The decade-old base game, Ultima Online, is widely considered to be a touchstone for a number of MMORPG staple features, among them "sharding" (or sequestration of the playerbase onto self-contained worlds / servers), highly customizable player housing, and a player-driven economy."

  • WarCry Q & A With Aaron Cohen

Warcry posted this interview with the Producer of Ultima Online, Aaron Cohen. Keep reading to see what they were able to learn.

WarCry Network: What is the progression curve like on UO at this time? Back in the day, people could get to some decent skill levels rather quickly. Is that still the case?

Aaron Cohen: Yes, you can get to 700 skill points and max out several skills in a few weeks to a month or so. The fun of UO isn't about working your character up to the highest level, it's choosing what skills you want to perfect and how to spend those 700 skill points across more than 50 different skills. Tweaking your character and finding the right mix for your style of play is what makes UO different from level-based games where the point is to get the highest rank.

  • Interview with Aaron Cohen

MMORPG.com had a chance to sit and talk to Aaron Cohen, a producer of Ultima Online recently. Keep reading to find out what they were able to learn.

MMORPG.com: The 9th Anniversary Edition of Ultima Online can be found in stores. Can you talk a bit about what you were trying to accomplish with it and how it has been received on your servers?

Aaron Cohen: Our anniversary products are meant to do two things: 1) Keep UO on store shelves so new players can easily get into the game, and 2) Give existing UO fans a commemorative edition with lots of in-game value, but which isn't a "mandatory to play" purchase like an expansion pack.

So far, the response has been great. We've seen trial subs go up and players who bought the pack seem very happy with the more than 50 gift items they could choose from.

It's being reported that Ultima Online has cracked down on rule breaching players who have been unbalancing the game world's economy. Ferrago.com reports...

Publisher EA have axed the accounts of some 180 participants in the persistent world of Ultima Online, and have in the process sliced some 15 trillion gold pieces from the world of the game. The accounts in question were linked to users found abusing the game's rules related to the storage of gold in Ultima's cheque system.

  • Will "Mondain's Legacy" enliven UO's mundane legacy?

The honorable, eight-year-old granddaddy of MMOs, Ultima Online, recently got a kick in the pants with the recent "Mondain's Legacy" expansion. A handful of developers and designers sat down with RPG Vault to detail its new features.

I think all aspects of Mondain's Legacy were influenced by the community in some form or another. That's a big reason why this expansion has so many different types of things to do. Because our community has lots of different likes and dislikes, we spent many hours trying to best fit community requests into a realistic production schedule.

The hardest part of game development is limiting the number of implemented designs in order fulfill a realistic goal. There are many more things we'd really like to do, but we have to prioritize what we can do within the necessary constraints.

Read through this lengthy UO Q&A at RPG Vault, if you wanna.
