Developed by Lockpick Entertainment, Dreamlords is a particularly unique entry into the MMOG marketplace. Developed as both an RTS and a turn-based strategy game, Dreamlords requires players to operate a windowed game client and a browser at the same time to play the game. While the game client depicts all of the RTS battle sequences a player engages in, the browser functions as the turn-based strategy portion of the game.
In the game, players control a Dreamlord that functions as a divine being to a particular race of people chosen by the player. These races include the Thul, the Nihilum and the Covenant. All three of these races have their own particular advantages and fit into certain play-styles. For example, the Thul are the preferred race for individuals who enjoy fighting in many RTS battles.
Unlike other MMOGs, Dreamlords is only semi-persistent. Every few months the team at Lockpick begins a new "Era" and all the players start from scratch, albeit with a few special items or designations that they've earned from previous battles. This way all the players are on fairly equal footing and those who are skilled can rise in rank fairly quickly.
On October 22, 2007, Lockpick Entertainment announced that the game was re-entering a period of development following the close of the most recent era. According to the site, "this new part in the Dreamlords saga will introduce many new features, missions together with upgrades of various functions and we are really thrilled about it, to say the least." Dreamlords was re-launched on June 18, 2008 as Dreamlords: The Reawakening and closed down in November 2010.
Development on the game once again resummed when the remnants of Lockpick Entertainment inked a deal with Paradox Interactive to further develop the game under the name of Dreamlords: Resurrection. Dreamlords: Resurrection launched again on March 10th, 2011.
Dreamlords: Resurrection reached the end of its epic journey on September 29th, 2011 when the game officially shut down following a final epic battle between players and the Nedom Wolves. Whther the game will return again at a later date is unknown, but for now, it appears that the era of Dreamlords is over.
