Playing off the impressive success of the original Linage, the developers at NCsoft pulled out all the stops when they created Lineage II, a 3D fantasy MMORPG set 150 years before the events in the first game take place. Built on the Unreal Engine 2, Lineage II was a huge step forward technologically for the series and was certainly a different sort of game than its predecessor.

Players that enter the world will first select their race (Human, Dwarf, Elf, Dark Elf, and Orc) then select between two archetypes (Fighter or Mage). After advancing a few levels in the game, players will then select a sub-class, which is determined by your archetype selection and your player race.

The gameplay in Lineage II revolves around the killing of monsters. While there is a fully-functional questing system in the game, the most common way for players to gain experience is through "grinding" - killing monsters in the environment over and over again. Player versus player combat is also a very integral portion of the game and uses a Karma system to insure that PvP combat does not go out of control and impact the play of other players.

Finally, Lineage II has achieved a good measure of popularity on the global market, although never reaching the numbers that were touted in the first Lineage title.

Lineage II adopted a "Truly Free" business model with the launch of its Goddess of Destruction update in November 2011.

  • Lineage II: Interview with Han and Davidson

MMORPG.com posted an interview today with the makers of Lineage II. Lead Designer and the Producer answer some questions.

MMORPG.com: How goes the battle against the bots?

Adam Davidson: It's going well. We've actually recently eclipsed over 100k accounts banned for this activity, just in North America, and our techniques and processes get more sophisticated and efficient as we move forward. They are a determined bunch, but we know that we are just as determined on our end and we plan to keep enforcing our User Agreement for as long we can foresee.

  • RPG Vault questions noted composer Inon Zur about his work on NCsoft's expansion, the associated live concert and more

RPG Vault had a chance to sit down and talk with Inon Zur about the upcoming Oath of Blood expansion. Keep reading to see what this reknown composer had to say about his work on this project.

"...In 1997, I composed my first score for a video game, Star Trek: Klingon Academy. Since then I have composed the scores for close to 40 games, including Lineage II: Chronicle 5 - Oath of Blood, Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones, Prince of Persia: Warrior Within, SOCOM II, Champions of Norrath: Realms of EverQuest, Baldur's Gate II: Throne of Bhaal, Icewind Dale II and many more. I really enjoy the creative freedom of scoring games. In them, the music is allowed to breathe and develop much more than in linear forms of entertainment such as film and television."

  • Developer Q&A #2 - Chronicle 5: The Oath of Blood

The official site for Lineage II has put up the second developers Q & A. You can even get a look at some of the concept art on the drawing board!

Dashammer: Will the special ability Might Mortal ever be actually removed from all present daggers with the SA?

Lineage II Dev Team: Hello, Dashammer! The Mortal Strike (previously named Might Mortal) special ability made the dagger classes too strong and this change was made to balance this issue. But we are not planning to remove the existing daggers with the Mortal Strike special ability. We will leave them as is, rare items.

Head over and read the rest of the Q & A. Let us know what you think in the forums at Ten Ton Hammer.
