  • The Balanced Build: The Ability to Adapt by Jonathan Sharp

The oldest and arguably best GvG template in Guild Wars is the balanced build. Balanced builds have been around since the first BWEs, and they still make up a large portion of GvG builds. These complex builds require a great amount of tactical precision and multiple layers of synergy between the individual characters, and they demand multiple levels of offense—pressure, spike, and split. Balanced builds test individual skill and team coordination in ways that few other builds do. Ask many top teams which type of build they prefer to play, however, and you'll usually receive the same response—a balanced build.

    Bots Banned 26 May 2006
In our continuing efforts to preserve a solid game economy and to support the legitimate Guild Wars player, we have been actively pursuing those who use "bots" in Guild Wars. In the last week, we have closed more than one thousand accounts of those using third-party programs, and we will continue to take similar action in the future.

Let the smackdown of justice begin!

  • Ever wonder how much our favorite MMORPG publisher is making? I certainly do. I chalk it up to an obscene amount of curiosity.

If you're struck by the same level of curiosity that I am, you are in luck! Yahoo Finance has NCSoft's first quarter earnings report.

By game, Lineage® posted sales of KRW 30 billion (US$32 million), up 1% from the previous quarter. Lineage II saw its contribution dip 4% to KRW 29.1 billion (US$31 million) from the previous quarter. Sales of City of Heroes/City of Villains and Guild Wars decreased by 58% and 57% respectively to KRW 6.5 billion (US$6.9 million) and KRW 6.3 billion (US$6.7 million).

The first quarter results marked a downturn from the previous quarter and NCsoft attributed this to a lack of new product launches. The company explained the results were generally in line with forecasts made at the beginning of the year. NCsoft anticipated that sales will resume growing in the second quarter with the launch of new products. The company also revised its earnings guidance to KW 353 billion (US$375.8 million) in sales and to KW 50 billion (US$53.2 million) in operating profit based on product launch plans and market circumstances.

I'm surprised by the decline in sales for both the "City of - " franchise as well as Guild Wars. They're both fantastic properties. Lineage 2, meh, doesn't surprise me in the least. I imagine that it's doing really well in the Asian market.

  • Auto Assault delay evident in NCSoft earnings drop

Posting a 49% drop from projected Q1 earnings and a 45% drop in operating profits from Q4 2005, NCSoft now has investor confidence and nasty gadfly lawsuits to worry about.

South Korea's largest publisher of online games, announced today its first-quarter earnings had dropped by almost half due to the absence of new products. In the January-March period, net income reached 6.8 billion won (US$7.3 million), down 49 per cent from a year earlier, the company said in a regulatory filing.

If Auto Assault had released on schedule in late 2005, maybe NCSoft's earnings would have been a little more steady. No crying over spilled milk, though. Hopefully the April release of Auto Assault and Guild Wars Faction will get NCSoft's bottom line back on track.

Check out the NCSoft earnings alert at TMCNet.

  • Just RPG has an interview with Arena Net's Jeff Strain. With Factions just released, see what he has to say on why Guild Wars stands out from the other MMOs.

    3. Jason: The market is filled with MMORPGs nowadays, from big budget games like World of Warcraft, EverQuest, and Final Fantasy XI, to some lower budget yet very high-quality independent games. What about Guild Wars separates it from the rest? Why should gamers choose it over other MMORPGs?

Jeff: First of all, all of those other games (and there are some very good games in that genre) are all just polished incarnations of a traditional MMO that was laid down ten years ago with Ultima Online. It’s a game mechanic that requires you to grind away, in many cases, trying to level up. The whole goal in many of those games is to just get higher and higher leveled so that you can eventually, after a thousand hours, get to see the cool stuff. You don’t take on those games lightly. If you’re going to play a traditional MMO, not only do you have to be willing to commit to it financially in terms of an ongoing subscription, but also in terms of your life. You don’t play casually – you’re either completely immersed in it or you quit. It’s kind of like people kicking a drug addiction.

  • You've been waiting for it. You've had anticipation like nobody's business. So much anticipation that you can't leave your home now for fear of missing any new news. It happens, it's ok. Just open the door, get in your car and go.

April 26, 2006 (BELLEVUE, WA) – ArenaNet®, developer of the award-winning online roleplaying game Guild Wars®, and NCsoft® Corporation, the world’s leading developer and publisher of online computer games, announce today that one of the year’s most-anticipated PC titles, Guild Wars Factions™, has officially shipped. For fans of the game that revolutionized online roleplaying, the wait is nearly over as Guild Wars Factions goes out today to retail stores worldwide.

Guild Wars Factions is the stand-alone follow-up to Guild Wars, the game that set new standards in online gaming with fresh design, innovative technology and no-subscription-fee pricing. With an expected retail price of $49.99, Guild Wars Factions will be available worldwide and servers supporting the new release will “go live” at 12:01 AM PDT /7:01 GMT on April 28, 2006.

Those who pre-ordered the game will be able to participate in the exclusive Guild Wars Factions Head Start Event beginning at 12:01 AM PDT/7:01 AM GMT on April 27, 2006. These lucky gamers will have access to the game for a total of 48 hours, including a full 24 hours before the game’s global release. During the first 24 hours of the Head Start Event, ArenaNet has planned an exclusive in-game event titled "Day of the Tengu," in which players will join one-day-only "Day of the Tengu" quests, and earn exclusive in-game rewards.

“New features in Guild Wars Factions such as guild scrimmages, alliance battles, ranked character titles, and some surprises still to come all resulted from our drive to create a truly unique gaming experience for existing and new fans of the Guild Wars universe,” says Mike O’Brien, co-founder of ArenaNet. “With a full year of development and a passionate design team, we think what we’ve created delivers on that and much, much more. Either played as a stand-alone game, or linked with your original Guild Wars account, Guild Wars Factions is a game we are thoroughly proud of—and still carries no subscription fee.”

Guild Wars Factions takes place on the Asian-inspired continent of Cantha, where players create a character from eight distinct professions—including the newly created Assassin and Ritualist—and join an epic quest that pits two warring factions, the Luxons and the Kurzicks, against an ancient evil, and against each other. As players become embroiled in this brutal war of conquest, new missions will provide both roleplaying fans and competitive PvP players the opportunity to help determine the fate of Cantha.

Guild Wars Factions is rated T for Teen. For more information, please visit www.guildwars.com.

Have tons of fun getting into this game.

The guild that wins its match in the shortest amount of time will take home the gold; the second-fasted the silver; the third-fastest the bronze.
