  • A Journalist's Opinion of the LotRO Founders Program

As the time for preordering draws to an end, Cody "Micajah" Bye takes a look at LotRO's Founders Program and the influence it will have on the games to come. He explores how getting a "head start" in character leveling could affect the beta tests of future titles and how the marketing campaign has turned MMO marketing on its head.

But that doesn't mean there aren't any drawbacks to the system that Turbine and company are now employing. There are some big risks involved in providing the sort of benefits that the Founders Program offers. Providing players with an open beta character they can keep after release and offering them a lowered set of subscription rates can cause some problems with the development cycle of the game, if the publisher isn't flexible.

  • Gaming on a Budget - Is Upgrading Possible?

The first in a series of articles focused on gamers with a tight pocket book, Micajah focuses on how a gamer can (or can't) upgrade his computer on limited funds. In the article he explores where the money should go and how you should approach upgrading with only a few bucks to spare.

Set your sights lower. Before you plop down $1600 for a new machine ask yourself this question: what's the biggest problem with my current computer? Why do I need to upgrade? Once that question is answered - and it's not for a selfish reason like "my buddy at work has a pimped-out machine" - you need to make a prioritized list to see what you can and can't upgrade with your money.

  • We are equal opportunity gamers....
Earth Eternal has posted two more chapters from the game's storyline on their official website. Here's a sample from Chapter 11.

Despite this return to the lands of their youth, the Mystarchs found no welcome homecoming upon their arrival in their appointed regions. Word of Zahhak’s cruel and dismissive rule had spread throughout all of Europe and the Mystarchs, once widely viewed as noble protectors of the land and people, were now seen as the vassals of a mad overlord. Still, the nations were obedient, if grudgingly, for they had experienced the power of the Mystarchs in the noon sun of their power.

  • Q&A with White Wolf Publishing

On November 11, 2006, the gaming industry was grabbed by its lapels and given a hearty shake as an announcement of monstrous proportions hit the 'net: CCP Games and White Wolf Publishing had merged. To add jet fuel to the already ferocious fire the announcement also included a little statement saying, "White Wolf will leverage CCP's industry-leading technologies to bring its offline role-playing titles online." In an effort to gain some more perspective on the entire situation, I tracked down White Wolf President Mike Tinney and Marketing Director Kelley Barnes-Herrmann and asked them to fill in some of the background details that occurred before the deal was made and just how work on the World of Darkness MMO is progressing.

With their like-minded vision for an approach to the World of Darkness MMO, along with the compatible corporate cultures and personalities between CCP and White Wolf, it just felt right for a collaborative effort. There were a number of parts to the merger that made it a good fit for both companies: geographic locations, areas of expertise that complimented the needs that the other half had, CCP was ready to add a second title to their studio, etc. We were talking with most of the major design studios and publishers in the field, and any one of them could have been a good partner for us, but these "crazy Icelanders" ended up being the perfect fit for us, and I believe us for them.
