In the estimations of many, the fantasy themed, top-down perspective MMOG Lineage was once one of the most popular online games to ever grace the massively multiplayer marketplace. Released to Korean citizens in 1998, Lineage was one of the first graphical MMOGs in the world and was certainly one of the most popular games in Korea for years. According to MMOGchart, Lineage - at its peak - was recording over three million subscribers. Lineage still remains popular with several hundred thousand users, but does not compete for the top slots in the market anymore.

The gameplay in Lineage is fairly derivative of Dungeons and Dragons, as players have certain alignments (lawful good, neutral, evil) and gain levels by earning experience points through questing and defeating monsters. Treasure and loot can be found off dead monsters and players can then use it on their own characters. Attribute points such as strength, wisdom, and charisma are also used to measure the abilities of a player's character. At the beginning of the game players choose from five character classes: elf, knight, wizard, prince/princess, or dark elf.

As a side note, the title of the game - Lineage - came from a series of comic books with the same name and the servers are actually named after characters in that series.

In their neverending bid to make me believe they are the lunatics of MMORPGs some Lineage players have hacked MSN in Korea to steal Lineage login info. If the weren't hacked, they wrote this:

"Police investigators and Microsoft specialists are continuing to search for clues to the culprits behind this week's high-profile computer break-in. More details emerged Friday about the hacking, which targeted subscribers of an online game called "Lineage" that is popular in Asia."
