More on Ten Ton Hammer

Asheron's Call released in 1999 in direct competition with Everquest and Ultima Online. Asheron's Call, although never heralding the same sort of success as the other two games, remains active and well-populated to this day.

Taking a slightly different course than the other two games on the market, the world of Asheron's Call launched full of creatures that were atypical for a fantasy setting. Rather than seeing dwarves and unicorns, players fought insect-like Olthoi, the cat-like humanoid Drudges, and reptilian Sclavus.

Perhaps the most interesting part of AC was the idea of the limited magic-use. Players could create their own magical spells, and the less used a magical spell was in the world, the more power it could create. It was an interesting and intense system, one that many people enjoyed.

Asheron's Call is P2P.

The letter to the players this month is...."J" and the number is 2.
Turbine has posted the Asheron's Call August Letter to the Players. The Canadian Postal Service was unavailable for comment:

"This month marks the first content update since the launch of Throne of Destiny and we've got quite an event in store for you. We've been very happy with the reception that AC:TD has received from all of you, including a large number of returning players, and we think you'll be very happy with what you'll be seeing in this event. The August event, "Friend and Foe," is currently scheduled to go live on Wednesday, August 17th. But before we go into details, there's one other announcement I'd like to repeat."

Is a new look on an old game enough?
GamersInfo has posted a review of Asheron's Call: Throne of Destiny. A drudge got caught in a Turbine causing the following annuouncement from those involved:

"Much has changed from the old AC that many of us knew. While the basics of the game remain the same - gain experience, spend experience on skills while leveling - ToD gives us new content to experience. Gone is the Lego-like blocky world and surroundings and in are new graphics. Granted, the new improved graphics are still in their infancy compared to the cutting edge work of the latest MMO, and perhaps more work could be done, but those of use who play the "old" AC will have to get used to playing in the "new" AC. The first time I logged into the expansion I really had to wonder if I was indeed playing the same game! Again, while the graphic improvements that are being included in ToD don't measure up to some of today's MMOs, AC will still run on many lower end machines - something almost no MMO on the market today can boast. The likelihood of you needing to buy a new machine to play this game is slim."

Five years ago the game launched. We decided to interview the devs today.
GameCloud has an Asheron's Call: Throne of Destiny interview posted. A drudge, who is not affiliated with The Drudge Report, but who suspiciously shares the name was heard spouting this:

"Launching five years ago when the massively multiplayer game genre was still fresh and new, developer Turbine's Asheron's Call quickly became one of the most popular MMORPGs ever released and still has a solid folling. Now the developer has taken over the full reigns of their first game from publisher Microsoft and are about to re-launch it as a retail product called Asheron's Call: Throne of Destiny with new content, features, improved graphics and more. Gamecloud got a chance to chat with Turbine's Alex Beckers about the new version of the game."

    A look-see at AC.
Techgage has posted their preview of Asheron's Call: Throne of Destiny. Diet gurus were reluctant to explain why you could actually lose weight
while you sleep provided you read the following for 20 minutes every day:

"AC originally launched in November of 1999, and up to now, have only one other expansion pack under their belt. Dark Majesty, the games first expansion pack, released in August of 2001, and is responsible for some of the land mass players roam in today. That expansion pack also launched player housing, where players could have a humble abode to call their own. You may be wondering why Turbine only released 1 expansion pack over the period 6 years, while such other companies like to release a new expansion pack per month. Well, I have no idea. But, to keep players happy, Turbine has released new content with a monthly patch, which well than made up for a complete expansion pack."
