StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty is the first of a planned trilogy of campaigns which are the collective sequel to the original StarCraft. Developed by Blizzard Entertainment, StarCraft II is a Real Time Strategy game in which players can assume leadership of one of three main armies: Protoss, Terrans or the Zerg.
Like the original, StarCraft II will feature both a single player campaign as well as a strong competitive multiplayer component. These multiplayer matches will be created in and played through Blizzard's Battle.Net service which automatically tracks and ranks the performance of each individual player. Unlike the original StarCraft where a top ranked player could assume an "alternate" persona in multiplayer and effectively dominate lower ranked players for their own amusement, the newly revamped Battle.Net ranks players on an account wide basis, so players ranked in higher brackets will generally only participate in matches against other players of a similar skill level.
The first single player campaign in the trilogy, StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty, will focus on the Terrans which are the human army of the StarCraft universe. Both a standard and collector's edition for Wings of Liberty have been announced, and are expected to ship in July 27th, 2010. The titles and release dates have not yet been announced for the second and third installments of the trilogy.
The next installment, StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm, will center around the character of Sarah Kerrigan, also known as the Queen of Blades.
