More on Ten Ton Hammer

Dark and Light is a MMOG developed by NP Cube and published by Farlan Entertainment. The premise behind the development of the game was to make a world that was truly massive. Using a landscape generator and other technologies (like SpeedTree), the developers at NP Cube created a vast world measuring 15,000 square kilometers. Unfortunately, the world was scarcely populated when the game was released, and many individuals playing the game felt like they were adventuring in a lonely world.

Aside from the land, Dark and Light has its focus on player versus environment combat and "the three axes", which are crafting, fighting, and socializing. Abbreviated CXP, FXP, and SXP, these three axes are intertwined with one another, allowing characters to advance in the overall world around them by becoming a baron or lord.

A variety of career paths also gives characters access to many different options to advance in. Dark and Light provides the player with 12 races and and nineteen classes to choose from.

Dark and Light generates revenue via monthly subscriptions.

Exclusive Dark and Light Q&A with Géraldine Lescs

On the list of headquarters locations for MMORPG development, Africa's Macarene Islands probably rival Iceland in the "surprising but true" category. Nevertheless, our latest Dark and Light Q&A comes to you direct from the two tiny Indian Ocean island nations called Mauritius and La Réunion. Géraldine Lescs, Marketing Manager for Farlan Entertainment's truely massive MMORPG, clears up a few misconceptions about the game, introduces some little known DnL features, and also clues us in about Farlan's future plans for Dark and Light.

"Géraldine Lescs, Farlan Entertainment: ''What is really unique in Dark and Light is that players never experience travel constraints. Not only they can use terrestrial mounts as soon as they start playing, but also they can fly using para-glide, experience free fall parachuting, or snowboard from the very first levels onward. And, using flying mounts, players can ascend, fly above the clouds or the rain... they are totally free.'"

Here is the situation as it stands from community posts on the Dark & Light boards.

    MMORPG.com Tells All

MMORPG.com has posted a review of Dark and Light. This review includes some really nice screenshots. Keep reading to learn more.

Take the world of an MMORPG, multiply it by a hundred and add complete freedom of movement and a fluid day/night cycle with changing seasons and weather. This is Dark and Light. The world of Dark and Light is so huge that you can actually get lost in it. You can spend hours just exploring and enjoying the wonderful views of bright deserts, snowy mountain peeks and dark caverns. Unfortunately, this big beautiful world is pretty much empty.

The environment may never stop impressing, but the character models certainly do. They do not make good use of the current technology and their animations are at times silly. In fights your character sometimes swings his sword in circles above his head before hitting the enemy. The characters do a disservice to the environments they populate.

This just in from Farlan Entertainment...

Farlan Entertainment, publisher of Dark and Light™, The Largest MMORPG You’ve Ever Seen!, today announced two additions to its popular online fantasy game that provide even more engagement for players on a daily basis. Alchemic Dream, Dark and Light’s community management provider, has initiated multiple daily events for players to participate in, while the return of Dark and Light’s newsletter, the Ganareth Gazette, once again keeps players up to date on the battles, villains, nobility, creatures, quests, and other developments in the land of Ganareth.

Ganareth is a living, breathing world full of inspiration, intrigue and adventure—a world people naturally want to be a part of.”

The events introduced into Dark and Light are sure to be varied and fresh. The Ganareth Gazette is an indispensable daily news publication detailing all the latest that’s happening in the world of Dark and Light. Feature articles also provide valuable information about the history, characters and strategies of Dark and Light. Players can find the Ganareth Gazette by logging onto www.darkandlight.com.

In addition to these additions, Dark and Light has launched a new corporate home page at www.darkandlight.com .

Easter comes early to Dark and Light.
17 lucky explorers in the recently released title Dark and Light won themselves free lifetime memberships.

"“The thousands of players who registered for our Settlers of Ganareth pre-opening phase stood by our game through some challenging times. These free memberships, given to the winners of the “Dragon of the Apocalypse” quest, are one way for us to thank people who involved themselves in Dark and Light,” said Frederick Caille, CEO of Farlan Entertainment. “With other favors and perks planned for the future, we encourage our loyal fans to continue experiencing the fun and adventure that is Dark and Light.” "

The Dark and Light PR team had this to say about that.

"Farlan Entertainment, publisher of Dark and Light£, The Largest MMORPG You’ve Ever Seen!, announced today that a special thanks has just been extended to seventeen intrepid Settlers of Ganareth players who saved the land of Ganareth from the fearsome “Dragons of the Apocalypse.” Beginning last week these players, each resourceful enough to locate one dragon’s egg secreted away somewhere within Ganareth, are eligible to activate a free lifetime membership to Dark and Light using their Dark and Light activation key, thereby enabling them to play at no cost for as long as Dark and Light exists.
“The thousands of players who registered for our Settlers of Ganareth pre-opening phase stood by our game through some challenging times. These free memberships, given to the winners of the “Dragon of the Apocalypse” quest, are one way for us to thank people who involved themselves in Dark and Light,” said Frederick Caille, CEO of Farlan Entertainment. “With other favors and perks planned for the future, we encourage our loyal fans to continue experiencing the fun and adventure that is Dark and Light.”

Settlers who undertook the quest were asked to decipher clues from enigmas issued by an oracle. These enigmas, issued weekly, eventually led seventeen players to eggs that were hidden by the evil Dragoon in his attempt to launch a new race of terrifying, cross-bred dragons—creatures certain to inflict mayhem throughout the land of Ganareth.

    First Reviews Come In

Today, GameZone posted one of the first significant reviews of Dark and Light.

Players, after choosing race, begin at the citizen level, killing mobs to acquire the experience to level. Upon leveling, there are seven areas in which a player may distribute points, and there are also four initial paths that players can put points into. A player is considered a citizen until reaching level 10, at which point they get to choose their general class. The base skills fall into four categories – fighter, healer, hunter and spellcaster.

Head over and see if this reviewer gave this game the thumbs up or down...

There are updates to the Bestiary for Dark and Light.

For example, for centuries, fond of their mounts, the humans refused to change the name of the Dodos and the Ranchos, and nothing came of it! Even the proposition of “Dod’O”, although close and corresponding to the new rules of naming (race’ sub race) were stoically refused. The Dodo and the Rancho, therefore, are the only creatures to have conserved their ancestral name from the humans.

The Zoologists counted nearly 250 creatures in the world.

"Dark and Light will be available for download four days earlier, on May 26th, 2006, at 1pm UTC.

According to César Jacquet, manager of NPCube, “As the April 2006 release date got closer, we realized we were not satisfied with the balancing and debugging, so the development team decided to postpone the release until the best conditions” were in place."

Well that's a word you won't hear developers use in a positive light that often... Exploit.

There are six kinds of natural resources: wood, stone, metal, crystals, water/gas and animal products. They are used in the building and maintenance of a fort, as well as maintaining mana fountains. Each resource has its own purpose; animal products (strings, leather and others) are used for tents, water for life at the castle, etc. The resources can be found all over Ganareth, but you will have to find the suitable areas for the resource you are looking for. For example: On a mountain, you will gather mainly stone and metal, and not much wood.

    Read this developer log here.
