  • Gamespot and Gamespy Weigh In With Their Reports

After what reportedly was a fun filled weekend with the folks at Sigil and SoE, we have two more event reports for you to catch up on.

    Gamespot weighs in first saying...

After a couple of years of being dominated by Blizzard's World of Warcraft, could the massively multiplayer role-playing genre be in for a shakeup? That's the aim of Sony Online Entertainment and Sigil Games with Vanguard: Saga of Heroes, a fantasy-themed RPG where you can live and adventure in an online world populated with elves, humans, dragons, and some unique new races. Vanguard has had an interesting development history, as it was originally going to be published by Microsoft, but then SOE picked it up after Microsoft and Sigil parted ways.

    Next Gamespy tells us...

Wild speculation has swirled around Vanguard: Saga of Heroes almost from the moment it was announced. The game is the brainchild of Brad McQuaid and a handful of original EverQuest developers who founded Sigil Games to work on what McQuaid calls a "real MMO experience." That unapologetic, old-school MMO attitude and the limited information that's been released have raised a lot of questions.

  • Sigil and co-publisher Sony provide the chance to learn how their fantasy online world endeavor is coming along

RPG Vault has posted their report as well today on the media event recently held by Sigil and SOE.

Thestra may be the richest region in the world of Telon, with many of its grandest communities. Among them, some are New Targonor, a lively center of trade where Thestran humans hold sway, Leth Nurae, home of the High Elves, and Bordinar's Cleft, a redoubtable Dwarven stronghold snuggled deep within the central mountains. These are the three continents we'll be able to explore when Sigil Games Online's Vanguard: Saga of Heroes launches within the coming months, the current target being the first quarter of 2007. Leading up to this event, the title is currently in closed beta. Last Friday, the team and co-publisher Sony Online Entertainment invited some members of the press to San Diego to play a bit and to speak with several developers including the project's Co-Executive Producers, Brad McQuaid and Jeff Butler. I accepted instantly, of course.

  • In San Diego, Sigil speaks about travel, diplomacy, SOE and more has posted their report from the press event in San Diego. Find out what they learned from Jeff Butler and Brad McQuaid.

I had an interesting experience this past week, when I flew from Halifax to San Diego to attend an event being hosted by the people at Sigil Games and SOE for the upcoming MMORPG, Vanguard: Saga of Heroes.

When we arrived at the event, we were treated to a viewing of the game, as we watched the screens as someone controlled the avatars, we listened to Sigil President and Executive Producer Jeff Butler and Sigil CEO and Executive Producer Brad McQuaid as they discussed the game and answered questions from those reporters in the audience.

  • What Role Will You Play?

Games Radar takes a look at Vanguard: Saga of Heroes, focusing on the spheres of classes that will be available.

There are actually three different Spheres of classes in Vanguard: Saga of Heroes (didn't we mention that this game is huge?). In this portion of the preview, we'll focus on the Adventuring Sphere of classes which you'll select when you initially create your character. (We'll cover the Crafting and Diplomacy Spheres later in the week.) Your Adventuring class determines what kind of skills your character will be able to learn as you gain experience. These skills are predominantly combat based, whereas other Sphere's focus on other game aspects such as item creation and faction interaction.

  • All the World is a Stage...

Vanguard Spheres has posted an interview with GM Tage. Get a glimpse inside the world of this very interesting GM who is well known for his love of running events!

To resume our "Chats with the GMs", I thought I would follow my stroll with Vladmiir (it did take me a while to find my way back, silly rogue!) by catching an early-rising GM-Tage, aka Todd Thomas, and getting him to do what he likes!

It did prove even more interesting than I hoped! How could it not, actually, when this person lives in a world of fantasy and dreams in color??!! (Ok, so I'm guessing! I forgot to ask.) But enough small talk. Enjoy your coffee and read on!

  • Who is David Forrest?

Find your answer to that on the official site for Vanguard: Saga of Heroes. In this installment of their developer profiles we get a glimpse into the world of David Forrest, Senior Programmer.

What is your favorite part about working for a game company?

My favorite part of working on a game is getting to invent. I’ve lucked out at Sigil and had a chance to be an inventor on many different levels. Part of what drew me to programming originally was the way it let me be creative. I know that’s not typically what people think of when they hear the word “programming” but I guess that’s why I’m helping create a game world.
