  • MMORPG Failures Examined

In today's editorial at the TenTonHammer: Vanguard community site, Eliana takes a look at a current hot topic from the Official Vanguard Forums. The question posed on the thread is "Which MMO were you the most disappointed to see fail?". She looks to find the reasons why some games just cease to entertain us.

A recent discussion thread on the Vanguard Forums asked which massively-multiplayer online game (MMOG) people were the most disappointed to see fail.

"Which MMO were you the most disappointed to see fail?"

The thread had me thinking wistfully about the golden age of EverQuest, when EQ, along with Asheron's Call and Ultima Online, introduced the fantasy worlds of the massively-multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) for the first time. EverQuest, I'm sure, seemed unstoppable. I doubt that many of us who played beginning with beta testing or launch ever dreamed that, even though Norrath might live on, our avatars might not. I know that I didn't anticipate graduating from the Plane of Time to the Plane of Disappointment!

  • I used to be a bard! Sing with me: "From TTH Vanguard...A bard is still a bard, a pie is just a pie. Nerf herders need not apply, as time goes by..." Thank you! Thank you!

In today's VTTH editorial, Merriandra takes us into the world of the Bard. Are you in tune with your inner Bard, or does the mere thought of playing one cause you to cover your ears in terror?

Let’s play a word association game. Don’t worry, I’m not a psychiatrist, and I’m not planning to predict your personality type based on your response. I’m not a gnome, either, so you can be fairly sure that no weird inventions will result if you just humor me. Ready? Don’t think about your answer at all, just say the first thing that pops into your mind. If I say “bard”, you say…

  • Signature Art Imitating Life

Eliana, a writer for the Vanguard-TTH site, takes a look at the attachment gamers have to their characters and the worlds in which they play. She looks specifically at the popularity of making personalized signature art and what deeper meaning lies beneath them.

There’s probably not a gamer out there who doesn’t remember the first time they felt the magic—the magic of the game world. From Final Fantasy to EverQuest, these worlds are bursting with color and enchantment. Our avatars, too, are captivating. They never age; they look just like we want them to look. They’re prettier, more virtuous, nobler, and can leap tall buildings in a single bound.

  • With the game into Beta 2, everyone is on the edge of their seats to see what will and will not happen with this game. was lucky enough to get an Interview with Brad McQuaid CEO of Sigil Also they have 2 exclusive screenshots for your purveyance. Can you explain how raiding will work in Vanguard, given that there is no instancing? Would it be fair to assume that there is a very large amount of raid content?
    Brad McQuaid:

The majority of content in Vanguard will be group-oriented, with the minority being aimed at either more casual gameplay or the opposite, raiding. I don’t have exact numbers, but perhaps 60% or more of the content is targeted at the grouping audience, with another 20% or so at the more casual and then another 20% at raiding. The way to get around the need for “instancing” is simply to have enough content. There needs to be a lot to do, and a large world in which to do it. We plan to achieve this by creating a huge, seamless world, with every square foot filled with points of interest, quest content, and a myriad of dungeons.

By having both a large world and a lot of content, including huge dungeons designed to support multiple groups at the same time, we are confident that instancing those areas won’t be necessary. We feel that instancing removes the opportunity to socialize with other people, or to just stand back as an observer and watch a large group in an intense battle. We do appreciate though that people don’t want senseless downtime and we have a trick up our sleeves on this very point that we feel large groups will love.

  • You were all noobs once.
Moghedan Carns continues "A Hopeful Promise: My First MMO" with part 2!

" In Freeport for about a week, I slowly discovered little things…like the rest of Freeport and vendors. I managed to find my trainer listed in the note I had received on creation! I was even able to accidentally get inside the floating castle, where I discovered I could buy new spells. By this time, I had found my spell book and was able to use my spells again after death. Minor Shielding gave me one of those squares, so I used it all the time. Tishan gave me a wolf head square. Sadly, it never turned me into a werewolf. "

  • Guild Wars Expansion Goes Live

The Game Update Notes are up and the previews will start turning into reviews as Guild Wars gets its first major expansion. Like the Warrior/Mesmer once said to the Monk/Elementalist:

Sorrow's Furnace consists of two new, large and challenging explorable regions located deep in the Shiverpeak Mountains between Spearhead Peak and Snake Dance. These areas contain the following:

    * Seventeen new quests, most of them fully repeatable and offering high XP rewards

    * Four new cinematics

    * A variety of new monsters, including new Stone Summit Dwarves that are the strongest in the Shiverpeak Mountains, and entirely new types of creatures that are being introduced to the game for the first time

    * Boss monsters named after the contest winning entries

Boss monsters in the new Sorrow's Furnace regions drop newly-introduced green "unique" weapons that are named after the boss.

Read the rest of the Guild Wars: Sorrow's Furnace expansion update notes at the site, and check out the TTH Guild Wars site for more detailed Guild Wars information.
