Sony initiated the restoration of its online services for Sony Online Entertainment (SOE), Playstation Network (PSN) and Qricity services this weekend. But is Sony's network secure enough to safeguard against another attack?

SOE's library of MMOs returned with "welcome back" in-game events and free play time for players to make up for the recent cyber attack outage. Before logging back into any of these services, players are required to change their passwords, one of the many things that hackers were able to gain access to when they breached Sony's security last month.

It's been a little while since we've had an official update from Sony Online Entertainment (SOE) since services were suspended last week following the discovery that SOE's systems had also been compromised in last month's attack, but today SOE breaks the silence today with a new update. While today's update doesn't offer a solid date for services restoration, it does provide a list of what SOE will be doing to make up the downtime and security breach to its customers.

Like NA Playstation Network customers, NA SOE customers will also have the option to enroll in the 12-month ALLClear ID Plus identity theft protection service. Similar programs will be offered to users outside of the US. Subscribers to SOE games will also receive 30 free days of game time plus one day for each day services are down. Additionally, each of SOE's games will be offering a series of in-game events and in some cases items as part of a "welcome back" to players. Lifetime and Station Access subscribers will be receiving an allotment of Station Cash as well. Check out the official announcement after the break for all the details.

The update notes that services are expected to be down at least a few more days. So if you're looking for something to do, be sure to browse our game list by clicking "Select an MMO..." located in the upper right corner of the Ten Ton Hammer website. You'll find plenty of subscription and free-to-play games there to keep you busy while the SOE downtime continues.

Sony downtime continues this week as additional security work on Playstation Network, Qriocity and Sony Online Entertainment systems remains in testing. Details of 2500 contest entrants were leaked and removed from a dated Sony website last week following rumored reports of a weekend attack. Is Sony secure enough to have services restored by the end of the month as many speculate?

Earlier today we reported that Sony Online Entertainment (SOE) had taken down its online gaming portals and game services following a discovery of another issue today relating to the intrusion that brought down SOE websites and Playstation Network about two weeks ago. Initially, SOE reported that they did not believe any customer information had been compromised since SOE's systems were separate from that of the Playstation Network. However, in SOE's latest update, it would appear that this is not the case and even more Sony customer’s personal details may now be at risk.

It appears that Sony's trouble continues today following the intrusion that took place almost two weeks ago that potentially compromised the personal details of millions of Playstation Network users. A quick visit to any of the Sony Online Entertainment websites and services for EverQuest II, DC Universe Online and other games in the developer's library reveals that SOE has taken the sites and services down following a discovered issue relating to the intrusion. What that issue is will be explained later, but for now, players are back in the dark.

We've contacted SOE for comment and will update you when we have more details.
