  • Free time is over! It's almost time to start paying for that playing.

In a press release, Codemasters has this to say.

The beta period draws to an end... - Michael 'Zzeno' Rowland (Community Liaison Manager)

A message for the beta testers:

I'd like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your hard work and dedication thus far.

The beta period has had its ups and its downs but in our opinion it has been a huge success in helping us
find and resolve crucial issues. With those issues fixed and with a couple minor gameplay issues being worked on, we are very confident that we are ready for the retail launch.

It is with this in mind that I have to make the following announcement about the closed beta. Thanks to the help of the community, the resolve of the dev team and the demands of you the customer, we will be closing the beta servers down and preparing for the launch of the full retail version of RF Online. Servers will be wiped, cleaned up and installed with the latest RF Online client and fixes.

Following up on today's beta announcement we will also be hearing from the games Producer, Simon Humphries, on what we have learned from the month long beta plus what we foresee in regard to updates for RF Online.

Please keep an eye on the news section for more details on the launch dates for RF Online across Europe and in the US.

So.. keep your eyes open. We'll have news on when this baby is going to launch.

  • MMORPG.com has an interview with Turbine's Steve Moy. He's the Beta manager for Dungeons & Dragons Online: Stormreach.

MMORPG.com: A number of our readers are expressing concerns that this game, like Guild Wars will be primarily instanced. If this is so, how do you justify charging a monthly fee?
    Steve Moy:

This is a great question and I’ll address it in two steps – our use of instancing and our monthly fee.

To be honest, our heavy use of instancing is a design choice more than anything else and it was one of the earliest and easiest decisions we made. Simply put, Dungeons & Dragons is about tackling dangerous environments with a small party of friends, not camping a spawn in a spot crowded with 50 other characters.

Our focus on instancing, along with our unique quest-based XP system, allows us to do things that you don’t typically expect to see in an online roleplaying game – collapsing floors, intricate puzzles, carefully-scripted encounters, deadly traps (that you can use to your advantage if you can lure monsters back into them) and of course, an ever-present sense of impending doom. What could be more D&D than that?

As far as monthly fees go, every online roleplaying game has its own business model, and ours relies on subscription revenue to offset the significant ongoing costs of maintaining a first-class game. Once the game ships, our development team will transition into a dedicated live team whose sole focus is to ensure that DDO is a living, breathing, constantly-evolving game. A portion of your fees also support our excellent customer service and technical support teams, and all of the hardware and bandwidth costs associated with running a game like this

    You're all Doomed... DOOOMED!
