Dungeons & Dragons Online: Eberron Unlimited + Lord of the Rings Online + RF Online + ArchLord + Jumpgate Evolution

  • Lord of the Rings Online Devs updated the official class page today with a more detailed description of the Guardian Class

    Guardian
    Races: Man, Elf, Dwarf, Hobbit

'Go after those two young hobbits, and guard them. . . .'
-The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring,
    "The Breaking of the Fellowship"

A doughty fighter and protector of the weak, a skilled Guardian can face even the toughest foes and survive. The Guardian is one of the few classes willing and able to try to draw more blows onto themselves, so they can retaliate with devastating maneuvers in response.

The Guardian will be the class of choice for players that enjoy drawing the attention of their foes in combat and taking advantage of their missteps. Masters of the defensive arts, Guardians use taxing attacks and irksome taunts to draw and hold opponents' attention, relying on their shield and weapon to turn aside incoming attacks with blocks and parries. A Guardian's combat style depends on creating openings during an opponent's attack to provide the opportunity for their own counterattack.

Finally! A class for all of the masochists out there! Not only will you draw that extra bit of pain and suffering to yourself but you'll look like a hero while you're doing it!

  • Voice Chat- so you can hear all the garbage everybody else is dying to tell
    you.
    Worthplaying has
let everyone know that Dungeons and Dragons Online: Stormreach will feature
Voice Chat. This makes DnD the first MMORPG to have integrated voice chat.

Dungeons & Dragons Online: Stormreach will be the first massively multiplayer
online role-playing game to offer integrated voice chat. Unlike previous MMORPGs,
voice chat in Dungeons & Dragons Online: Stormreach will not require players
to use their own system resources and bandwidth to host a chat server or run
third party chat programs while they play the game.
We've all been there. You're in an epic battle, spells flying left and right,
swords clashing, and monsters roaring. In the chaos of battle you suddenly
realize your hit points are low and start to type, "I need a heal!"
Just as you are about to hit enter... you die. Argh! If only we could all
type at 100 words-per-minute! Well, now you don't have to.
Dungeons & Dragons Online: Stormreach voice chat is fully integrated
and customizable right in the game client. Voice chat only works between those
in the same party so players won't be bothered by hearing too many conversations
    at once.
With voice chat, a rogue can quickly alert his party when he sees a trap
before that foolhardy Dwarf charges into it, and Clerics can concentrate on
the battle without fear of missing heal requests in the chat window. Integrating
an easy to use voice chat system allows players to react swiftly and discuss
strategies when dealing with Eberron's many trials, in much the same way as
when sitting at the gaming table playing the pen-and-paper game.

I can see how this would help take away typing as long as there isn't a bunch
of adults bashing kids like there always is.

  • Those lucky people who got to play the Dungeons and Dragons Online Beta have
    some thoughts...
    GamerGod
has the scoop on their first impressions:

It was a dark and stormy day in my mid-Fall 2005 school quarter when I received
an urgent instant message from Grimwell, our Editor-in-chief. He wanted to
talk to me on the phone. Now. "This is it," I thought, "He's
finally decided to bill me for all the bandwidth I've spent hanging around
his forums without contributing enough articles." No sense running from
danger, I picked up the phone and put on a brave face.
What awaited me on the other end of the receiver was a call from gaming nerd
nirvana, an offer to beta test Dungeons and Dragons Online: Stormreach. Yes,
the Dungeons and Dragons Online, based on the game that was to pencil and
paper RPGs what Everquest was to MMORPGs. A game that was so popular it leapt
off the pages and into an 80s cartoon series, dozens of computer games, and
a bona-fide bomb of a full motion picture. Now I was being offered the chance
to see the bliss of the twenty-sided dice through the eyes of a Turbine-made
    MMORPG engine.
I accepted Grimwell's invitation, and we immediately fell into habit of discussing
our favorite, cheesy D&D mechanics of old --things like multiclassed Monk/Wizards
and the joys of what it means to be a Gnomish Illusionist. It immediately
occurred to me that there was a great deal more Dungeons and Dragons knowledge
hanging around in my noggin than I thought. How many more gamers instinctively
carried such knowledge? This game wasn't just a game: it was our birthright.

  • An interview for a game you can almost play!
    MMORPGDot.com
has a Dungeons and Dragons Online interview from OGaming.

Turbine's Justin Quimby has been interviewed at D&D Online. Here's a
    bit on authenticity:

OGaming: How true to the source material – rule books, player's guides,
novels, etc. – will the title be?
Justin Quimby: Consider this. Every time you attack in our game, you see
a d20 pop up on screen that tells you what you rolled. We've gone to incredible
lengths to be as true to the pen and paper experience as we can. Arrows do
1d6 damage. We have spells like fireball and magic missile. You could print
your character sheet out and with very few modifications be able to play the
tabletop version. We have all the ability scores, skills, feats… it
all works the same way it does in the original version. That's one of the
great things about having the Dungeons & Dragons license too. You don't
have to come up with some random name like "magic bolt" for the
incantations your wizard casts… you get to call it by the name D&D
    fans recognize.
