  • But Tolkien did it without a database!

    Lord of the Rings Online Developer Chris "NobOrBob" Foster shows off one of Turbine's myriad tools for game development, this one focusing on quest implementation. With this much storyline behind a certifiably graphics-intensive MMO, and with such a devout LotR playerbase, it's a good thing Turbine's streamlining things where they can.

    For all these reasons and a few others, one of the biggest changes we made to the quest system was to replace the old quest file format with a new one. This unified quest file format contained nearly all of the information needed to place a quest in the world: the steps involved, the dialogue that each NPC says, the item that the monster should drop when it dies. In addition, the new quest file made it much easier to re-use the same characters on multiple quests...

  • Patience and PAX

    Patience of the LotRO dev team posted her reflections on her side of the Turbine team's experience at the Penny Arcade Expo (PAX). We like Turbine, they hand out lots of free stuff!

    As a special treat for PAX, we also showed a couple of things we didn't show at E3, even though they existed in the E3 build. We teleported to a prototype area of the Shire, with what might be a very familiar-looking windmill, horses, and clothesline to some of you who pay attention to the screenshots on the LOTRO site, and also to the Old Forest, to pay a visit to a sleeping Old Man Willow. This wasn't in the plan, but we just couldn't resist showing off a little bit more of the game. What was even more gratifying was being able to tell people who were blown away by the environments that the build is 5 months old; it looks even better these days, since the engine and a lot of the art has been updated (I was looking at the current build this afternoon in the QA pit and was pretty blown away myself by how beautiful it is, after being in the "old" build all weekend!).

  • DnD players, look up from your dice and handbooks a sec!

    Turbine's DDO team turned out at PAX in force, and has some spiffy pictures and captions to show for it. Luckily, Marut (today's profiled monster) didn't show up too; the pasty-white crowd was almost certainly ill-equipped to dispatch an extraplanar stone construct:

    A twelve foot tall statue of a hulking onyx man in golden armor stood before us for a moment before speaking in a mechanical voice.


    Clearly we were not going to agree to this command. Maruts are inevitables that represent the inevitability of death, and are lawful extraplanar constructs from Dolurrh, the Realm of the Dead. They hunt those who use unnatural means to cheat death. It's likely that this inevitable was hunting a powerful giant, and was sealed away rather than simply destroyed for unknown reasons.

    I tried explaining to the inevitable that the giants of Xen'drik are likely dead, and its mission is complete.


    Sighing, I nodded assent to the marut while simultaneously giving the others the signal for attack. It would be a difficult fight, but I had faith in my comrades.

  • DDO's newest subclass: Powerpuff Girls! Thanks Maya!

    A forum member showed concern regarding the presence of content to appeal to girls. The full forum thread is a bit of a trainwreck filled with criticism, but I'm sure at least some people out there will find the dev response amusing. Check out the full thread here.

    Ok, I am totally new to the forums here. I have never played DnD before, but am hoping for a fun game. However, one of the things that got me into playing games was the ability to make things pretty. (I know, its very girlie) I liked crafting, decorating and wearing pretty clothes. I am concerned that there is no girl content planned for this game. If I am just not finding the info, please enlighten me.

    Stratics has posted some Shakycam Screenshots of Dungeons and Dragons Online: Stormreach taken at the recent PAX event. Bruce Campbell has claimed that the shots are fakes and showed us his "Boomstick!" to prove it. Proof that they are legit includes the following:

  • More Q&As than a DnD Player's Handbook has Mountain Dew stains!

    As you read this interview with DDO Community Manager Victor Wachter- probing the decision to choose Eberron as a setting and sorting out what will make DDO compelling and unique in the genre- you just might be able to hear player's handbook pages turning and dice clattering deep in the background. Will alignment play a factor in DDO? Can I, for example, choose to play a Chaotic Evil character, or is the game for good guys only?

    Victor Wachter: Alignment is not embedded within the game systems, but these circumstances are presented within the quests and dungeons. Eberron itself is a setting where alignment is fluid, and so players may need to make choices that stretch the boundaries of their alignments. While alignment choices won’t limit a player’s options within the game, they will have an impact on how some NPC’s react toward their character.

    Brannoc - *DiploMooz* Hi! I had the good fortune to play the DDO E3 build recently. I was particularly fond of stealthing around with the rogue. It seemed somehow more interesting than the binary "can the mob see me or not" of previous games. Can you expound upon the features planned for stealthing in ddo?

    EckelberryDDO - I can try! Stealth is little more complicated than the you are detected or not sort of things. Of course we represent D&D in comparing your Hide Skill and Move Silently and the monster's Listen and Spot score. It also combines how long you dare to stay near the monster trying to detect you, and the level of lighting around your character, which can either give you a bonus or penalty to your skill check, and it can determin

    JustinQuimby - Just as a side note, we've put a ton more stuff into the game and polished a lot of features in the game since the E3 build. I'm very excited about the upcoming Alpha prop.

    GameSpy has posted a Dungeons and Dragons Online: Stormreach interview featuring designer Dave Eckleberry. Vin Diesel didn't roll the dice when he played Dungeons and Dragons. He just crushed them in his hand and called out the numbers. We're confident he didn't call this out:
