E3 Event Coverage

Dungeons & Dragons Online: Eberron Unlimited + Lord of the Rings Online News

  • The E3 Coverage continues with this Lord of the Rings Online Preview at Gamers Info.

he Lord of the Rings Online allows players to create characters from four of the Living Races: humans, elves, hobbits and dwarves. There's no option to play as a member of Sauron's forces: instead, the focus is placed on the game's narrative, which explores some of the struggles experienced by the Living Races at the end of the Third Age. Stepping on the heels of the Fellowship of the Ring isn't the aim here: instead, the game hopes to explore events in the rest of the world, whilst the Fellowship quest onwards towards Mount Doom.

  • Now we're talkin! Somewhere in the works I became a crafting nut and so anything with this topic gets me all warm and fuzzy inside. Turbine's Nik Davidson tells gives us the juice.

You've probably heard the joke about how games are like sausage: Best to just enjoy them and not think too hard about how they're made. For those like me, there is no sparing us the greasy intestinal details of design and production. We live it and love it. And like it or not, I'm going to share a bit of it with you. I'm going to tell you a story. A story about a boy, a coffee machine, and a dream. A story about the crafting system in The Lord of the Rings Online™: Shadows of Angmar™.

Before I launch into the explanation of our crafting system, I'll share this with you: At a certain point in the game's development, crafting was almost cut.

  • It's the first in a four parter. I don't mind saying that it's a good laundry list. But hey, I don't play the game so I could be wrong. Tell me what you think.

    New Enhancements

Module 2 will be introducing a number of new enhancements (purchased with action points) that will let players further customize and specialize your characters. Almost everyone will be getting some new enhancements to choose from; over the next few weeks we will be posting in-depth descriptions of what these new enhancements are and how they work.

    New Enhancements for Spellcasters

We have several new lines of enhancements for arcane spellcasters, designed to help them specialize in specific types of spells. With these new enhancements, casters can score spell criticals on damaging spells, similar to the critical hits that the sword-swingers get when they get lucky on an attack. Each enhancement is specific to one energy type, and gives you a percentage chance to score a critical, and a multiplier to damage. For example, a sorcerer with the enhancement "Lineage of Force 3" has a 15% chance of scoring 50% extra damage on their magic missiles; if he prefers to use fireballs he could instead take "Lineage of Deadly Fire" which only has a 3% chance of scoring a crit, but will do triple damage when it does.

  • Was Midas Chinese?
LotRO Source has posted an article on gold farming and the repercussions that the secondary market has on MMOGs.

"Selling gold in the gaming industry is like selling porn on the internet. Everyone claims not to do it, yet millions of real world dollars change hands each year. Game networks like OGaming are owned by companies that not only support this activity, but participate in it. Networks that do not participate in it still take advertising dollars from companies that sell gold. These are lucrative deals that make up much of these networks advertising income."

You can read the entire story at LotRO Source.

    Vendors and NPC's

    * The Jewelry and Clothing Pawnbrokers will be moving to the Marketplace Tent. Vendors selling non-magical consumable goods will take their place in the House shops.
    * We will be correcting some of the (now) incorrect NPC dialogue following the recent relocation of several quest NPCs.

These and more are in Q&A and will be available on the next update.

  • Turbine will add a new free module, called Twilight Forge due out in July.

Besides the addition of solo content, fans of the traditional pen and paper D&D will rejoice in the addition of the Drow as a playable race, adding more choice in character creation.

WESTWOOD, MA – May 10, 2006 – Turbine, Inc. announced today plans for a range of expanded player features and content, including more solo-friendly game play, to be included in the second content module for DUNGEONS & DRAGONS ONLINE™: Stormreach™ (DDO), the hit game that has quickly become one of the fastest-growing MMOGs (massively multiplayer online games) in North America. DDO is based on the world-renowned DUNGEONS & DRAGONS® brand franchise from Wizards of the Coast, Inc., a subsidiary of Hasbro, Inc. (NYSE: HAS).

Free to all current DUNGEONS & DRAGONS ONLINE™ subscribers, the Twilight Forge module is slated for release in July and will include the new drow race, new content for players of all levels, an improved new player experience, and enhanced replayability. Following on the heels of the successful retail launch with over 300,000 units sold worldwide, the Twilight Forge module is the second in a series of planned updates that will provide new content and features for DDO. DUNGEONS & DRAGONS is under license from the Hasbro Properties Group, the intellectual property development arm of Hasbro.

"The Twilight Forge module will offer new players an improved single player experience, and existing players will enjoy creating new drow characters and exploring lots of new dungeons," said Jeffrey Anderson, president and CEO of Turbine, Inc. "We are committed to delivering future DDO modules that include features that continue to expand the game, such as additional character levels and player-versus-player (PvP) battles."

Following on the April launch of the Dragon's Vault module, the Twilight Forge module offers new content for players of all levels ranging from new soloable dungeons in the harbor to additional advanced-level quests that culminate in a new raid encounter with the legendary Warforged Titan. The player experience has been vastly improved by including new features that make grouping easier, an improved user interface, and enhancements to the dungeons in the harbor that enable more solo-play and more diverse monster encounters.

In addition to the ability to create characters based on the drow, also known as the dark elf, players can expect to encounter eight new monsters from the D&D® universe, including the Mindflayer, Ogre Magi, Warforged Titan, Mummy and Lich. Finally, the Twilight Forge module includes a new award system that gives players bonuses for completing dungeons on all difficulty levels.

DUNGEONS & DRAGONS ONLINE: Stormreach recreates the essence of the classic pen-and-paper roleplaying experience - with an emphasis on non-grinding, instanced quests that provide a unique, immersive experience for each party. Authentic features in the game include customizable characters; dungeons filled with devious traps; monsters and stories from the Eberron® campaign setting; an on-screen d20 (20-sided die) and a dungeon master. The unique online world of Stormreach is a bustling city with thousands of players from around the world. It represents a new paradigm for the MMO genre with unique features including party-based quests, integrated voice chat, real-time action combat, and award winning graphics. DDO is based on the world-renowned DUNGEONS & DRAGONS brand franchise from Wizards of the Coast, Inc., a subsidiary of Hasbro.
