Dungeons & Dragons Online: Eberron Unlimited (commonly abbreviated DDO) is an MMORPG based on the Dungeons & Dragons 3.5 Edition roleplaying game. Developed by Turbine, DDO allows players to adventure in the Eberron Campaign Setting, a supplemental rulebook (penned by Keith Baker) to the standard Dungeons & Dragons game. Players choose from a variety of races and classes, eventually determining a selection that seems most appropriate for their play styles.

As an MMORPG, DDO actually steps outside of the box in many ways, taking some of the common mechanics of MMORPGs and supplementing them with rules taken from the D&D roleplaying game. Instead of turn-based action, DDO features real-time combat and integrated (and necessary) voice chat. Instead of being a "sit behind your computer and hit a button every now and then", Turbine wanted DDO to really stand out as a game that brings players together and emulates the true nature of D&D.

However, DDO got off to a rocky start and several server mergers have subsequently followed, albeit for the betterment of the community. DDO converted to a free-to-play model and has experienced a resurgence of interest with the gaming community. The new service offers an item shop that players can purchase items and downloadable content through as well as a premium membership, which provides the players with extra perks and a given amount of credits each month that can be used in the DDO store.

  • The Festival Jester Arrives!

The official site for Dungeons and Dragons Online has been updated with news on this holiday festival...

Festival is a new holiday commissioned by the Coin Lords of Stormreach. Since ancient times, the folk of Eberron have observed Long Shadows during these chill weeks -- a grim season when the power of the Shadow, god of the Dark Six, is at its strongest. Dire magic gathers in dusky corners, and evil stalks the night in a thousand guises. The Coin Lords have determined that the terror of Long Shadows must end! To this end, they devised Festival, a celebration to drive evil out of the city. Instead of cowering from the Shadow, citizens are encouraged to exchange gifts with their adventuring partners and loved ones. And by slaying the monsters who threaten the city's well-being, they may collect Festival Coins to demonstrate their dauntless spirit in the face of Long Shadows and the Dark Six!

  • Risia open for the Thanksgiving Weekend

The official site for Dungeons and Dragons Online has been updated with a notice that they will be opening a test server over the Thanksgiving weekend to let more players offer input and feedback on the upcoming content.

As a special treat for the Thanksgiving holiday we are bringing up the Risia Server to give you a chance to play and give feedback on the new dungeons we are adding in the "Evil Resurgent" update. We are using the same servers and character data that we used last time Risia was up, therefore we are giving out 10x the normal XP rate to help get you up and running on the Risia server faster. As a reminder, the servers that had character data copied to Risia last time were: Adar, Aerenal, Argonnessen, Aundair, Fernia, Ghallanda, Kyber, and Lhazaar, and the characters were copied at the beginning of October. Don't worry if your server isn't on this list or if your character has gained levels since the data was copied – the XP bonus will help you catch up in no time!

  • Victor Wachter Moves to Cryptic

According to MMORPG.com it's musical chairs time over at Dungeons and Dragons Online.

Victor "Sporkfire" Wachter, the Online Community Manager for Dungeons and Dragons Online, has jumped ship and landed at Cryptic Studios (City of Heroes/Villains, Marvel Universe Online) as their lead community manager.

"I am a huge fan of superheroes," Wachter told MMORPG.com, "and so working with the company that put the genre on the MMORPG map is one of the most exciting things to have ever happened to me. To be working on Marvel Universe Online makes it that much sweeter."

Wachter will be replaced at Turbine by current DDO Online Community Relations Specialist Ariel "Samera" Jaffee-Marks.

"DDO is going to be in great hands now that Samera is stepping up to run community relations," said Wachter. "She has always been the public face of OCR for the game and I am very proud of her."

  • Upcoming Changes to Mail and the Auction House

The official forums for Dungeons and Dragons Online has been updated again with news of changes coming to the mail and auction systems in game.

In the next update we are doing a complete restructure of the Auction House fees. Posting fees have both reduced and simplified. Previously we used a fairly complicated formula to determine the posting fee for an item. We are now going to be using a percentage of the item's value which will increase based on the length of the auction.

Keep reading to learn more. How do you feel about these changes? Let us know in our Ten Ton Hammer Forums today.

  • Development Update Talks About Death Penatly Changes

The official forums for Dungeons and Dragons Online has been updated with a post that discusses some changes to the Death Penalty.

We have completed our initial evaluation of the death penalty system and are in the process of making some changes. The first change we made was to increase the amount of experience you regain by using a Resurrection Shrine from 25% to 50% to match the amount granted by using the Raise Dead Spell. This change is already live and helps ensure that Clerics (and characters with high Use Magic Device skill that use Raise Dead scrolls on the rest of the party) will no longer suffer the worst death penalties of any class.

Head over and read the rest of the update. Have you stopped by our DDO Ten Ton Hammer Community site lately? Stop by today and check out our exclusive guides and information.

Neverwinter Nights 2 will include a code for a seven day free trial of DUNGEONS & DRAGONS ONLINE™: Stormreach™, and also that module 3, The Demon Sands, is now available bringing a string of new gameplay enhancements to the hit title. DUNGEONS & DRAGONS ONLINE: Stormreach is based on the world-renowned DUNGEONS & DRAGONS® brand franchise from Wizards of the Coast, Inc., a subsidiary of Hasbro, Inc. The game is developed by Turbine, published in Europe by Atari and operated by Codemasters Online Gaming.

No NN2 joy for North Americans, but you can still pick up the game for a $29.95 digital download at the DDO official site. You can read the same thing with more words by viewing the press release, but I'd recommend checking out the DDO - Ten Ton Hammer community site instead.
