  • What really happened at SOE Fan Faire, part 2:

RadarX returns from the 2006 SOE Fan Faire with many a story to tell. His official report contains all the gameplay stuff, but what really happens in between the official events? Perhaps you've been entertained by part one of Radar's blog and Coyote's version of events, now join our favorite templar for What Really Happens at SOE Fan Faire, part 2:

The butt crack of dawn, and I'm awoken by
stirring. Apparently SOME people can't sleep with any light in the room,
so no big deal, I'll just get up. I take a step, but am frozen in place,
and unable to move. I realize that Coyote has adjusted the room
temperature to his native environment of Antarctica. Moving my way past
the penguins, I throw the polar bears out of my bathtub, and yell to
Coyote he better have pants on when I get back.

  • There is a new piece in the Developer Corner on the official EverQuest 2 site.

    The Rise of the Orcs
Kerya stayed low and close to the trunk of the tree, ensuring she wasn't in the orcs' line of sight. It had taken considerable study of their crude language to be able to make sense of their guttural grunts and snorts.

"Stronger now!" the larger orc said to the smaller ones. "This new armor will strike fear into the Militia! They will fall before the might of the Bloodskull!"

"The treaty with our Rujarkian brothers was wise, General Vhar'Taug," one of the smaller orcs responded. "With this superior equipment, Freeport will soon be ours for the taking."

While you're wondering what's new with EQ2, go ahead and take a look at our EverQuest 2 Community. We have Fan Faire Coverage!

  • There's such a thing as taking a joke too far...

But that didn't stop our resident EQ2 comic Coyote Sharptongue from having a little fun with the "Search for Lucan" April Fools' joke played by the SOE - EQ2 dev team. The "contest" played on last year's "Search for Antonia" - where a real-life beauty won a yearlong modelling contract to represent EQ2 at tradeshows and such. While Antonia was symbolic of all things good, pure, and busty, Lucan D'Lere is the game's arch-villain.

Well... it turns out the fake contest yielded a few anxious contestants. To save face, Coyote was chosen to judge/summarily dismiss all those who seek to hold court in Freeport.

The next candidate growls as he leaps onto the table from the shadows. His dead eye glints wickedly from behind it’s scarred flesh as his lips curl back in an angry sneer. Stepping forward he raises an accusing finger to the judge and scowls with malice.

Coyotee looks at him, obviously not intimidated, and no longer impressed as he folds his arms over his chest. “You’re a GNOME.” The Kerran points out as the pint-sized Overlord’s sneer fades.

  • What really happens at MMO fan conventions?

And it's only slightly less creepy than what happens at those "furry" conventions. RadarX returns from Fan Faire with many stories to tell, if nothing else about Coyote. Get another perspective on what people actually do at Fan Faire by reading Part 1.

There are plenty of write-ups for Fan Faire discussing, PvP, tradeskills, what might or might not have said, but this was my first Fan Faire. What really was going to happen bothered me as I arrived in Atlanta an hour later than I wanted to? Apparently Atlanta is on EST time too *smacks forehead again* I check into the hotel, and hang out in my room, enjoying the time before the events. Strangely enough, this turned out to be my favorite part of the trip. Maybe it's due to the dire exhaustion I would have for the remainder of my adventure, or maybe I just needed the time.

  • "FAE ARE COMING WINTER 2006"

This cryptic message, along with "The Future of EverQuest II" spelled out in the game's "woodelf" font, was hidden in a sticker handed out at last week's SOE FanFaire 2006. (If you want details on how to break the code, click here) We received the sticker image (right - click it!) in a press release from SOE tonight that hinted at the "double coded message". The sticker seems to hint that a new retail expansion for EverQuest 2 will hit stores this holiday season.

Beyond that, according to Wiki, "fae" is simply an abbreviation of "faerie" - and what SOE means by that is anyone's guess. Old timers like me might remember a certain zone whose name contained something like "fae" (and that might just tie into the sticker's use of the "woodelf" font). But we're just speculating.

  • EQ2 Community Summit at SOE's FanFaire 2006... hammered.

RadarX went to the 2006 SOE Fan Faire Community Summit sessions to sit among those god-like developers and discuss issues affecting EverQuest 2. What is on their minds and where is the game heading? Why was Radar almost late to the first meeting? These and more exciting questions are answered here:

Fan Faire had more events than I can even dare to describe, but the highlight of these (in my book anyways) is the Community Summit, where Developers do the unthinkable in most subscribers' minds. They sit down, and actually listen to what players have to say. I know, I know. It's a little on the "crazy" side, but I swear it's effective. As I rushed into the room about 2 minutes before it started (I got up late for...*shifty* nothing), I scanned around the room looking for recognizable faces. I saw the usual supsects I knew and loved like Tamat from Ogaming, Aggro Me from...well Aggro Me, Cynabane from EQ2Daily, Niami from EQ2 Traders and so many more. Some of the developers we saw on hand included: Blackguard, Moorgard, Owlchick, Glendral, Arathym, Lotus, Archonix, Lockeye, Silverfrost, and Dymus. There is at least one more developer who works on items, that I know I don't have the name of (/grovel apology) but as you can see, there was a good representation from SOE. This said to me, they were serious about our concerns.

Read the rest of the article at EQ2 TenTonHammer. Be sure to stay tuned for part 2 of this article as well!

In the meantime, looking for more Fan Faire 2006 goodness? We've got a Fan Faire blog from Coyote, our resident EQ2 funnyman, as well as a smattering of pictures from the event.

  • Old McFarmer had some plat...

With the exception of Station Exchange servers, the EverQuest 2 secondary market is against Sony's end user license agreement. Many people located in many different countries jump at the chance of making real dollars for online property. Slide takes us behind the scenes of popular business properly nicknamed "farming" and "plat selling". There was a farmer had a coin and platinum was its name-o.

Massively Multiplayer Online Role playing games have always had a secondary market to contend with, from Ultima Online to the current games like World of Warcraft and EverQuest II. The secondary market is considered a hindrance to most. Players get annoyed and developers are constantly trying to shut them down. So what is it? The secondary market can be described as in game items and currency crossing over into the real life market. This is where individuals make real dollars from selling items and game currency to players.
