  • Burning Crusade Hunter Preview

The official site for World of Warcraft has been updated with a preview of what is to come with the upcoming expansion, The Burning Crusade. This preview gives us a look at the spells and talents of the Hunter.

Hunters now get 1 AP per Agility rather than 2. This change helps us provide more interesting stat distributions on hunter items. Previously, Hunters valued Agi significantly above any other stat, such that it was extremely difficult for us to create variety among Hunter items. For example, before this change, we could have spent 1 stat point on an item to give you either 2 AP or 1 Agi (which gave 2 AP along with a small bonus to crit and a small bonus to dodge... clearly the better choice). However, several changes have been made along with this change in order to offset the AP loss.

  • Is Bigger always Better?

How much should MMOs cater to the explorer segment of the playerbase? Constantly enlarging the world keeps things fresh and interesting, but is it worth the adverse social effects that come from spreading out a population in an ever larger world?

To cater to this group several developers have created insanely large worlds. At E3 this spring I heard many upcoming MMO developers bragging about the size of their virtual worlds. A few of them claim to have worlds several orders of magnitude larger than anything done before. It left me wondering if they were compensating for something. Other developers feel that every expansion or patch must add on significant pieces to the existing world so that players can explore new areas as they level.

  • Locations and Traveling within Outland

With the upcoming expansion, The Burning Crusade, adventures will find themselves in a strange new land known as Outland. We've gathered plenty of information on this new continent such as the flying mounts, the new instances, and the various regions.

"Flying mounts are the new form of transportation that comes with The Burning Crusade. They are native only to Outland (meaning they will not work in Azeroth) and they will allow players to travel the skies (and even the void) to various areas and instances that have no path connected to the ground."

More information is just a click away. Share your thoughts with us in the forums at WoW Ten Ton Hammer.

  • Get Answers About This New Profession

World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade expansion hosts a myriad of new content for the game. One of the many exciting features is the new profession of jewelcrafting. This FAQ answers many of the questions that you may have about the jewelcrafting profession.

Jewelcrafters can make jewelry (rings, amulets and trinkets). They can also make figurines for themselves (they are bind on pickup, so only jewelcrafters can use them) that are able to be equipped in a trinket slot. These figurines have passive benefits and also can add a quick buff when needed. Jewelcrafters can also cut jewels to be added into a socketed item.”

  • ZOMG... Kenny got pwned!

Comedy Central commercials revealed (and the WoW official site confirmed) that South Park will open the second half of its 10th season with a stab at World of Warcraft on Wed, Oct. 4th at 10pm (US Eastern and Pacific time):

In Comedy Central's teaser commercials for the first of a new batch of South Park episodes, the series' four main characters--elementary school kids Stan, Kyle, Cartman, and Kenny--gaze slack-jawed at computer screens, morbidly obese and riddled with zits. While the portrayal is a bit of a caricature of the typical massively multiplayer online role-playing game addict, it doesn't take a genius to guess that the show is turning its gaze toward the genre and its current standard-bearer, World of Warcraft.

Make love, not Warcraft in South Park, and Gamespot has the scoop.

  • Planting a Seed

This week's comment content editorial is about the recent failure of a promising upstart MMO known as Seed. Seed was an open-ended roleplaying game that allowed players use the environment to do whatever they wanted, from politics to trading. Recently,
Runestone Game Development (the creator of Seed) filed for bankruptcy and announces that Seed will be permanently closed. This begs to question, is there room in this industry for a non-combat orientated MMO? Our very own Aureal answers that question in this week's editorial: Planting a Seed.

"Conflict is the key to a good story and continuing conflict will keep a reader turning page after page to see what happens. In a game, the player is central to the plot; conflict is either resolved or ignited by their actions. This keeps the player sitting at his or her desk, continuing to finish that quest or vanquish that enemy."
