More on Ten Ton Hammer

Auto Assault was a MMOg developed by NetDevil and published by NCsoft. It combined vehicular combat with role-playing elements, allowing the player to explore a post-apocalyptic future in customizable cars, motorcycles, semis, and tanks. The player could choose one of three factions — Humans, Mutants, and Biomeks — and a class to determine the type of character. The majority of the gameplay took place in the vehicle, but the player left the vehicle when entering towns.

Released April 11, 2006, Auto Assault was hit with hard, critical reviews of the gameplay and features inherent in the title. Reviews contended that the game was too hard to get into and players simply couldn't achieve their goals. Ten Ton Hammer, on the other hand, believed Auto Assault to be a fairly good game, albeit with some nagging issues that could be revised post release. While a core group of players remained on the servers and continued to rule the roadways, the game's popularity dwindled and it was announced that the game's servers would be shut down on August 31, 2007.

Who'd have thought that an MMO about cars would be a hot potato?

Auto Assault CEO Scott Brown discusses the game's closure and indicates that the company has no plans to salvage it.

Earlier this week, NCSoft announced that they would cease operation of Auto Assault on August 31st, 2007 and we then spoke to David Swofford about the announcement. Now, in an exclusive interview with NetDevil CEO Scott Brown we learn that the developer has no plans to purchase the game back from its publisher, which effectively spells an end to Auto Assault.

Because what fun is a downward spiral if it's not long, drawn-out, and painful?

Two petitions have been started by disgruntled AA fans which are calling for Auto Assault to be saved.

The recent events have triggered outrage and many unanswered questions on the official AA boards. There is no official news whether NetDevil will intervene and buy the IP back off NCSoft's hand, or if there is any willing buyer at all.

    Closing the garage doors...

MMORPG's Jon Wood tracks down NCSoft's David Swofford for comment on AA's cancellation:

I think David summed it up best when he said, "What we were putting in, we weren't getting back". In the end, while they may be games to us, MMORPGs like Auto Assault are a business and a business that loses money just doesn't make any sense.

Character Transfer Window Closes on April 18

The official site for Auto Assualt has been updated with a reminder that the character transfer service to Nexus is soon to end.

The window to transfer your old characters to Nexus will close on April 18. After that date all characters that have not been transferred (this process stems back to the server merge; if you already moved your characters or made them after the establishment of Nexus you have nothing to worry about) will be erased.

NetDevil Celebrates the Anniversary of Auto Assault with a Ten Ton Hammer Q&A!

It's been a wild ride for NetDevil and Auto Assault, but they've made it. A year of service has been successfully completed by the team, and the atmosphere surrounding the game has never been better. In order to commemorate this occasion, we caught up to Scott Brown, President of NetDevil, to see what his thoughts were on Auto Assault and their upcoming projects, Warmonger and the Lego MMO.

I think that AA suffered from high degrees of difficulty, complexity and the style was just too different for people to actually commit to the game. It was too much all at once. That said, we've actually seen a pretty serious "stick" rate for players that play long enough to really see the depth in Auto Assault. We're still trying to soften the edges a bit for the new player so that the learning curve is not quite so steep. We think this will bring in a much bigger audience, while giving new players a real feel for just how cool AA is.

    Two In-Game Events This Week

The official site for Auto Assault has details on two events. One planned for today, the other on Saturday.

We'll be having some in-game fun this week, similar to the in-game events we've done in the past: funky, weird spawns, general insanity, and weirdo movie references - and we'll be doing them in both Ground Zero and near the starter towns. They'll be held on Wednesday at 1PM CDT (as of this moment is 6PM GMT) and Saturday at 8PM CDT.
