  • IGN has a review of the latest fare from Netdevil - Auto Assault. The skinny is that they gave the game a 7.5 out of 10. Not a bad score.

While faction choice mostly means the same game with three different sets of clothing, there is still a ton of game to be found no matter which group you choose to call your own. You'll be doing a load of collection, delivery, killing, and some recon quests, which you'll either find pleasingly accessible or frustratingly shallow and repetitive, depending on your tastes. If you're the type who likes to sit down for several hours and go questing, you'll probably be under whelmed. If you prefer something you can play for an hour, maybe two, without having to get committed to a particular activity to the point where you can't even risk getting up to answer your front door, then you might find AA more satisfying than World of Warcraft or EverQuest. Like WoW, quests can be managed solo for quite a while before you need to start grouping — which is a good thing, because there aren't a whole lot of people playing. You can run around by yourself, picking up loot and shooting stuff, which is pretty fun as long as you don't go for more than a couple hours.

On a side note... Take a week or so and try this game out. The road rage outlet alone is worth the cash. Blow up that soccer mom that always seems to swerve in front of you and then slows down. Just... makes.. freakin.. mad...

  • A look inside the Auto Assault war room...

It's always nice to see MMOs make the mainstream news (well, except when the headline decries parental neglect or Chinese communist ambitions). This is, in fact, the second or third professional piece from the land of Rocky Mts. and microbrews I've seen in the last week or so.

Included is a interesting look inside NetDevil's hub during the last hours before the game went gold:

Speaking last week on the precipice of opening the floodgates to his company’s virtual word, Brown said NetDevil’s future could hinge on the success of the game.

“I’m not worried about bugs (in the game); there’s going to be some weird stuff,” he said. “It’s just launching that scares me.

“That’s what I’m mostly scared about, having too many or too few players.”

Too many, and the desolate earth of Auto Assault could crumble under the strain; too few and NetDevil might.

  • WooOOOOooo! For all of us schleps that were too lazy to pre-order Auto Assault here is some good news!

AUSTIN, Texas, April 13, 2006—NCsoft® North America announced today that Auto Assault® launched commercial service in North America, Europe and other select markets worldwide. Developed by Colorado-based developer, NetDevil®, LTD, Auto Assault is the first massively multiplayer online (MMO) game set in a post-apocalyptic world featuring vehicle combat on an epic scale and fully destructible environments.

Auto Assault is available at retailers in North America at an expected price of US$49.99. The Limited Edition, which includes a headset to utilize the game’s voice chat system and a game soundtrack CD, will be available for an expected price of US$59.99. Both the standard and Limited editions of the game include the first month of online game play. After the first month, players will be charged a monthly subscription fee of US$14.99. Sixty-day game time cards will also be available at many North American retailers for an expected price of US$29.99.

In Auto Assault, players choose from three races and venture into a post-apocalyptic Earth wreaking havoc and vying for control over the few resources left. Players can design their characters and customize many different vehicle chassis to make their own unique fleet of death machines. Players may go on missions with others or on their own, craft unique items, and participate in player-versus-player combat via the arena system and contested outpost battles. No matter what they are doing, players are encouraged to interact with the game world by blasting through buildings, leveling towns and destroying just about everything they see.

“Auto Assault is a truly unique game, and a fantastic addition to our catalog,” said Robert Garriott, CEO of NCsoft North America. “There is nothing like it in the MMO game space – it is easy to play, fast, and very fun. Auto Assault gives players the best of action games, the best of role-playing games and a super-cool world to discover and destroy.”

The release of Auto Assault represents both a continuation of NCsoft’s efforts to provide gamers many compelling products to play online, and the beginning of another great service with free content updates and expansions in the years to come. Additionally, a veteran rewards program has been put in place for players who subscribe to Auto Assault within the first thirty days of service.

If you're bored with all of the fantasy type games, this is the game for you!

  • Pikachu meets vehicle-launched tactical nukes.

If you listened to our second podcast, you learned that playing cards is a fun way to pass the time between fights in your favorite old-school MMO (/cough). However, this is probably not what the makers of Auto Assault had in mind when they pasted their storyboard assets to virtual cover stock and created a digitized (drumroll please) Auto Assault Trading Card Game.

The real news: public testing of the game has begun, and you're invited.

Worlds Apart Productions announced the availability of public testing for the Auto Assault™ Trading Card Game (TCG), the digital trading-card game based on Auto Assault® the fastest, most destructive MMO ever, published by NCsoft and developed by NetDevil.

Check out the Auto Assault TCG infobit at Gaming-Age. And, hey, maybe the TCG site hasn't been blocked by your office computer firewall yet!

And, oh, did we mention that Auto Assault the MMO comes out this Thursday, April 13th? Spectacular. Check out our Auto Assault @ TenTonHammer community site for all your destructive needs, or visit the Auto Assault official site.

  • The local boys are famous! NetDevil is featured prominently in the latest issue of the Denver Business Journal, including various quotes from NetDevil and NCsoft staff, in an article discussing the development of Auto Assault and the MMOG industry.

With Auto Assault, players customize their own combat vehicles, control the weaponry for their own artillery and develop their own characters -- whether they're robots, humans or a combination of both.

Jeremy Gaffney, vice president of product development for NCsoft's U.S. division in Austin, Texas, said Auto Assault should appeal to both "aging geeks" who fondly remember the car-related video games of the 1970s and '80s and the young geeks who've never played such games.
