Firefly was a short-lived television show that developed a dedicated cult following of fans often referred to as Browncoats, a term used for one of the two sides that fought a war in the series. After the show was cancelled, Multiverse acquired the rights to develop a new Firefly MMOG, which they inevitably shelved. Firefly Universe Online was later born from the pasion of fans at developer DarkCryo that took to the waves and began development of their own Firefly MMOG with Firefly Universe Online.
The developers at DarkCryo don't have an official licensing deal with IP owner 20th Century Fox, but they are working on trying to get one. In the meantime, the game is being developed under fair use.
DarkCryo already boasts to have four playable factions for the game: Browncoats, Alliance, Megacorp and Reavers and several worlds and star systems. Fans will also find several of the shows characters making an appearance such as the crew of Serenity, Badger, Saffron and several other characters from the show.
Firefly Universe Online is expected to launch December 26th, 2012 acording to the game's first official trailer.
