Tabula Rasa + World of Warcraft + Fury News

  • In a Press Release today, it has been stated that WoW has a little bit of a discrimination problem. Who is being discriminated against? People of Asian descent primarily. The fear that they are "Chinese Gold Farmers" has given the English speaking servers a bad name.

There is a common belief among English speaking players in World of Warcraft that most non English speaking players are gold farmers. This is a type of player who is only playing the game to profit, not for the “love of the game.” Gold Farmers are largely despised by players who feel they take away a certain purity of the game.

To combat gold farmers, players are requesting anybody who wants to join a group to type one or two lines of English. If the sentences or grammar are not proper English these players are rejected from joining this group. This is what is creating the backlash among non-English speaking players with feel they are being discriminated against based on their language.

There is an article on Kotaku (thanks mmorpgdot) about this issue. I'm not going to say whether I agree with it or not, but I'd love for you to Tell Me! what you think about the whole ordeal.

  • Looks like Blizzard is being kind with the candy again. Blizzplanet has a new Exclusive screen of the upcoming expansion Burning Crusade.

Blizzard Entertainment has granted an exclusive screenshot of World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade Expansion, displaying one of the chambers of the Tower of Kharazhan, known as the Tower of Medivh in Warcraft: The Last Guardian and chapter 8 of the Human Campaign in Warcraft: Orcs and Humans.

Choose any of the three image sizes.

The World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade Video Tour 1 over at Gamespot shows the room of our exclusive screenshot -- shown at BlizzCon 2005.

It seems Sargeras/Medivh had a Michael Angelo-esque Artist create a Fresco-painting of Orchish angels on the ceiling.

  • Wow, we can almost play Burning Crusade!
    MMORPG.com
has an editorial by Garrett Fuller concerning the expansion to one of the biggest
MMOs out there- World of Warcraft:

No release date has been announced. There will be a level cap boost to 70.
There is a Horde race. The Alliance race has yet to be seen. There will be
new instance dungeons. There will be new raid dungeons. There will be a new
zone with flying mounts and quests. All this sounds nice and good, well actually
not all of it. In this editorial I want to try and bring up some questions
about what The Burning Crusade will mean for five million players.
That is right, five million! Congratulations Blizzard on the largest selling
MMORPG to date! In doing more research on this game I am most surprised at
the sheer amount of people who play. From executives and celebrities to my
friend’s twelve year old son (who still beats me in duels), it seems
like everyone plays this game. Is everyone happy with the content and game-play
of Warcraft? Some yes, some no, we have all had a lot of things to say about
the design of the game and its flaws. The biggest question players have is
what will The Burning Crusade bring?
Blizzard has given us a wonderful preview video. A look at the Blood Elf
race and answered some questions about content like Medivh’s Tower and
Karazhan. I for one am looking forward to the Caverns of Time and the Outlands.
A large concern is how the boost in level will affect players who have reached
their end-game at level 60. For example, will dungeons like Molten Core and
Blackwing Lair become obsolete? Will all the time players spend farming those
dungeons for epic items go to waste? With Blizzard using level based loot
as rewards for questing, PvP, and factions, will these items even compare
to the level seventy gear that we all expect to see? This is a very difficult
question to ask and unfortunately Blizzard has not given any straight answers
to their players. One post on their forums had said that they will certainly
come up with something to balance the loot by the time the expansion is released.
Many players remain concerned on how the level seventy content will impact
all the time spent playing at level sixty.

    Find
out what else he has to say.

  • Better get a canary.
    GamerGod's
Jukaar has help for those of you wanting to be miners in World of Warcraft.

Things you should know before choosing to become a Miner:
If your primary profession is either Blacksmithing or Engineering, Mining
is practically a prerequisite. Both professions require materials that can
only be acquired through Mining. You could choose to not take up Mining as
your second profession, but consequently you'll have to spend an inpractical
amount of money on the materials you need to raise your Blacksmithing and
    Engineering.
Mining is a great way to make money compared to some other professions. Unless
you intend to take up Leatherworking, Mining is a good profession to consider.
The only way to make large amounts of money through mining is by selling Arcane
Crystals and Blood of the Mountain in the Auction House. Both items are extremely
rare, however, and you shouldn't become a miner solely to farm them.

There is quite a few handy tips divided into sections for easy reading. Enjoy!

  • So the moral of this story is that if you cheat you're going to get your butt booted! does the boot all of those wretched pharmers dance

In keeping with Blizzard's aggressive stance against cheating in World of Warcraft, we have permanently closed more than 18,000 accounts over the past three months for participating in activities that violate the game's Terms of Use.
A majority of these accounts were found to be using third-party programs to farm gold and items. Such actions can severely impact the economy of a realm and the overall game enjoyment for all players.

We will continue to actively monitor all World of Warcraft realms in order to protect the service and its players from the negative effects of cheating. Please note that selling World of Warcraft content, such as gold, items, and characters, can result in the permanent removal of the involved accounts from World of Warcraft.

A portion of the account closures announced today came as the result of tips reported to our GMs in game or emailed to hacks@blizzard.com by legitimate World of Warcraft players. If you suspect that a World of Warcraft character is using an illegal third-party program to farm gold or items, or is otherwise violating our Terms of Use, please report the suspected infraction via one of the means listed above. All reports will be investigated, and those that prove false will not result in corrective action.

Thank you for your continued support, and good luck with your adventures in Azeroth!

  • Is there a single person out there that doesn't play WoW?
    I guess not- Shacknews
reports that there are now a total of 5 million subscribers to WoW! Wow!

For those of you keeping score at home. Blizzard Entertainment has just announced
that they have now reached 5 million paying subscribers to World of Warcraft
across the globe. In late July it was 3.5 million and then 4 million in late
August. So 5 million is like, a lot more.
    IRVINE, Calif. – December 19, 2005 – Blizzard Entertainment,
Inc. today announced that World of Warcraft®, its
massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG), has surpassed five
million customers worldwide. The subscription-based MMORPG launched approximately
one year ago in North America, Australia, and New Zealand and has since released
in multiple countries throughout Europe and Asia.
So then... 5 million people paying roughly $12 - $15 per month would be $60
    - $75 million each month. Perhaps if they work really hard they get to gross
over a billion dollars next year.

  • WoW: The Burning Crusade At CVG
Are they on fire or something?
    CVG
got a chance to drill the mind of Shane Dabiri about the upcoming expansion
    for World of Warcraft.
Who is Shane Dabiri? Find out:

What are you currently working on at the moment in the expansion?
Shane Dabiri: As lead producer on the World of Warcraft team, I'm currently
undertaking the exciting task of dividing and focusing our resources on the
development of both the expansion set and on the continuing content development
for the current game. This should help us streamline our efforts for 2006.
What percentage of the content is geared toward players of all levels, and
what percentage to only level 60 (and above with the level cap increase) characters?
Shane Dabiri: As is traditional with MMO expansions, a large portion of the
content will be geared toward characters in the range between the current
maximum and new maximum levels, starting at around level 55. However, we do
also plan to add content to better tie in the new races to the world, so players
who choose to start as one of the new races will experience a great deal of
new content up to about level 20.
