  • Exploring Middle-earth: The Dead Spire

Today brings us a new installment of Exploring Middle-earth. The official site is updated today with a look at The Dead Spire.

The Barrow-downs is a name of dread, but it was not always so. The barrows were originally raised by the Edain, Men of ancient days, and later kept and revered by the Dúnedain of Cardolan. In the Third Age, a great plague swept across Middle-earth, out of Mordor, and the last vestiges of the Men of Cardolan perished. The Witch-king of Angmar sent evil spirits out of Angmar and Rhudaur to stir the bones of the dead and make the Barrow-downs the place of dread and evil it has become.

  • Exploring Middle-earth: The Withywindle

The Lord of the Rings Online official site has been updated with another entry of what you may find while exploring Middle-earth.

From its source in the mysterious Barrow-downs and all along its course through the Old Forest, the River Withywindle is a place of strange happenings and of dark and ancient legends. When adventuring in unknown areas within the Old Forest, travellers would be wise to avoid these winding, slow-moving waters, though doing so may prove difficult – The Withywindle has a way of drawing the unwary toward its deceptively tranquil surface and into its dark depths. It is also said that strange creatures of the forest - and even the very willow trees themselves along the Withywindle's banks - are agents of its ancient evil.

  • How Is EQ2 Faring?

Gamespy.com has published a state of the game article. How do you think EQ2 is doing? Read on to see how Gamespy feels...

The original EverQuest is indisputably the grandpappy of MMOs as we know them today. It wasn't the first of its kind, and it was far from perfect, but there's no denying how pervasive its influence was. EverQuest II, on the other hand, entered the market at a very different time. It launched alongside the stiffest competition possible -- World of Warcraft -- but still garnered positive reviews, mostly due to its progressive, accessible gameplay, and rich, bustling, detail-rich world.

  • Exploring Middle-earth: The House of Tom Bombadil

Today, the official site for Lord of the Rings Online was updated with a look at more of the interesting places players will be able to explore in Middle Earth. Today's look it at The House of Tom Bombadil.

In the Old Forest, between Buckland and the Barrow-downs, stands a welcome sight: the home of Tom Bombadil and Goldberry, the River-maiden. Weary travellers will find this an unusually pleasant retreat amongst the ancient and often foreboding forest and the mist-shrouded downs beyond. Tom Bombadil himself is a person who defies specific explanation, though his intentions clearly favor the Free Peoples of Middle-earth.

Read more about what you might find in Middle Earth and then head over to LOTRO Ten Ton Hammer. You'll find the latest news, interviews and information on this upcoming Turbine MMO as well as a wonderful community, so jump on into the forums and let us know what you're thinking.

  • Creatures of Middle-earth: Neekerbreekers

On the official Lord of the Rings Online site, we are given a look at some of the creatures that will inhabit Middle-earth. Today, we are given a glimpse at Neekerbreekers.

Throughout Middle-earth there are many forms of insect; some mere annoyances, others more dangerous, and some that are a mystery rarely, if ever, seen. Neekerbreekers once fell into the last category. For ages, they were merely a distracting noise in the dark corners of the Midgewater Marshes, but recently a shadow has passed through Bree-land, and they have become more aggressive and begun to swarm.

Learn more about Neekerbreekers and see what they look like. What do you think of this creature? Let us know at LOTRO Ten Ton Hammer.

  • The information for this game is starting to ramp up. Are you excited? Can you feel those little shivers of anticipation? I can.. Oh yes.. I can.

GWN: Compared to video’s I saw in 2004 to recent videos on-line, Tabula Rasa has seen cataclysmic stylistic changes. What prompted them?

Long: A couple of years ago we took the product to E3 in 2004 and we showed the product with its original style and the average reaction was that they didn’t really understand it. With that in mind we only really want to make successful games, we had to re-evaluate what we had done and that it wasn’t right for the market or the success we had envisioned. We kept some of the back story, the different alien races, and the symbolic language that Richard had created, but then we gave the gameplay more of a shooter feel. The weapons are more traditional, though you still have powers, but their more intelligible than using drumsticks to kill things. Much more straight-up sci-fi.

  • Rick Schmitz Dev Diary - Various Valuable and Unlabelled Things

Find out what The Lord of the Rings Online's Lead Content Support Artist, Rick Scmitz, has to say in his updated Dev Diary...

Hello there! Rick "October" Schmitz here!

I'm the Lead Content Support Artist on The Lord of the Rings Online™: Shadows of Angmar™ (LOTRO). You may be wondering, "What the heck kind of title is that?" Well, it's the sort of title you get when you're crazy enough to work with Content folks and Artists.

While the majority of the LOTRO Art team is toiling away on all sorts of things you might expect to find in a game based on J.R.R. Tolkien's amazing books (like Orcs, Dwarves, Rivendell, hobbit holes and so on), the Content Support team makes some of the unexpected items that the Content folks dream up along the way.
