  • Can you spare some change (descriptions)?

On EQ2's official site, the developers highlight some of the more blaring changes to characters' spells and combat abilities in the wake of the recent "Combat Changes." Now everyone can learn about the fun, new abilities no one really wanted!

In this article, we take a closer look at how some of the abilities have changed for each class and how to integrate them with your play style. Utilizing the tactics and knowledge within and combining that with in-game experimentation and ability analysis will lead to success with your character.

I guess the changes are good for us even if not particularly pleasant for some classes, like the Vegan junk our significant others might force upon our meat- and beer-craven mouths. See the Combat and Spell Changes at the Everquest 2 official site!

  • Crazy Overlord hijinx!

Apparently Everquest 2's nutty prince of evil is messing with the weather again. What are we gonna do with him? Coming on the eve of the Desert of Flames expansion, there seems to be a strong hint of something else going on here. Hmm...

He turned to the cloaked Teir'Dal standing behind him. "Now," he commanded.

The Foci raised her staff and pointed it at the sky. An arcane fire glowed within her eyes for a moment as she uttered a single word: "Rain."

The clouds began to slowly swirl and gather as a low thunder rolled in the distance. He turned back to the crowd below.

"Now, citizens of Freeport, watch as I cleanse our kingdom of the last remnant of a distant past. Today, as we stand on the threshold of a new frontier, know that it is my will, not the faded memory of long-dead gods, which sustains us. Give me your loyalty and I will give you... the world!"

  • Desert of Flames and Changes.
Sony Online Entertainment has posted an EverQuest 2 Producer's Letter featuring Scott Hartsman. The letter focuses on the upcoming Desert of Flames Expansion and on the combat changes that are being introduced at the same time. It sounds like a while new game. Tom Cruise refuted claims that he was a Enchanted Lands Fairy and retorted:

" For those of you who keep up with the forums, some of this is going to be things that you've heard before.  For those who haven't, some of this may come as a surprise.
Many people will be relearning parts of their characters, getting used to new spell lines and working with altered buffs.  That's a lot for us to ask, and we realize that.  As a way of thanking you for sticking through the effect this will have on your first few sessions, we'll be running a week of Bonus Adventure Experience for characters under level 50 beginning the day that Desert of Flames launches.
I'd like to take a few minutes to talk about what it is exactly that's going on with the game, what you can expect to see on Tuesday 9/13, and our reasons for bringing you these combat changes. "

  • But Tolkien did it without a database!

Lord of the Rings Online Developer Chris "NobOrBob" Foster shows off one of Turbine's myriad tools for game development, this one focusing on quest implementation. With this much storyline behind a certifiably graphics-intensive MMO, and with such a devout LotR playerbase, it's a good thing Turbine's streamlining things where they can.

For all these reasons and a few others, one of the biggest changes we made to the quest system was to replace the old quest file format with a new one. This unified quest file format contained nearly all of the information needed to place a quest in the world: the steps involved, the dialogue that each NPC says, the item that the monster should drop when it dies. In addition, the new quest file made it much easier to re-use the same characters on multiple quests...

  • Patience and PAX

Patience of the LotRO dev team posted her reflections on her side of the Turbine team's experience at the Penny Arcade Expo (PAX). We like Turbine, they hand out lots of free stuff!

As a special treat for PAX, we also showed a couple of things we didn't show at E3, even though they existed in the E3 build. We teleported to a prototype area of the Shire, with what might be a very familiar-looking windmill, horses, and clothesline to some of you who pay attention to the screenshots on the LOTRO site, and also to the Old Forest, to pay a visit to a sleeping Old Man Willow. This wasn't in the plan, but we just couldn't resist showing off a little bit more of the game. What was even more gratifying was being able to tell people who were blown away by the environments that the build is 5 months old; it looks even better these days, since the engine and a lot of the art has been updated (I was looking at the current build this afternoon in the QA pit and was pretty blown away myself by how beautiful it is, after being in the "old" build all weekend!).

  • Who needs Korea when EQ2 has "Combat Changes"?!
The infamous "Combat Changes" loom on the EQ2 horizon, making a number of folks restless. This week's pseudo-therpeutic, semi-humorous, 100% fun column walks one quavering Warden through the early stages of acceptance and previews some of the changes too! Then the article quickly quickly gets out of hand as yours truly discusses my proposed "Combat Changes!" Check it out!

"Of course, the Star Wars Galaxies veterans (well, at least the ones that left the game to play EQ2) started having sweaty flashbacks when they heard that SOE was out to redo the pummeling procedure in their newfound home. As things in EQ2 are in no way as bad as SWG was in the pre-CU days (where botting was the new ganking, and you and your friends could eat the nastiest PvE mobs alive with ease with the right combination of armor, weaponry, and buffs), we'll likely not see what many considered a total over-reaction that threw the entertainers out with the bathwater. And let's spend a moment in eulogy of the Hutt dancers, cantina musicians, and other ways the SWG revamp chagrined its pure artisans. SWG sought to be as novel as the 70s cultural phenomenon that spawned it, and SWG's "Combat Changes" in many ways returned the game to its MMOG roots at the expense of entertainer as an viable and attractive subclass offering. EQ2 is pretty down-home-comfort in its RPG approach. So in EQ2 née SWG, there were fewer points of contact for play imbalances and player malignment in the first place."

  • A Treasure Chest! Or, maybe just an update. You decide.
Sony Online Entertainment has posted the latest EverQuest 2 Treasure Chest. At the mention of a treasure chest the TTH offices became infested with pirates. Ninjas were called in to remove the infestation, but all we could get out of them was this:

"Sometimes it's hard to find the buried treasures contained within the EverQuest II forums. The Treasure Chest highlights useful, insightful, or entertaining posts that you may want to check out. Get your treasure maps and shovels ready--we're about to discover a Treasure Chest!

  • Take a tour and punt a gnome!

Cogglesworth's Tour of Norrath, Part 3 examines the zones that surround the two warring cities in EQ2. Included are some screenshots taken at such a high resolution that I could almost hear the computer cry out in pain over in San Diego.

Professor Cogglesworth is a gnome sage of some renown. While he is well-known for cataloging a compendium of legendary figures, he has also compiled a journal detailing the lands he and others have visited. The professor has gone to great lengths to compile accurate information, but it should be noted that some entries within this journal may not be entirely factual. Cogglesworth is an exceptionally intelligent scholar, but history and lore are sometimes a matter of perspective.

We continue today with two entries from Professor Cogglesworth's journal: Antonica and The Commonlands.

Take a look at the continuing Everquest 2 zone pictorial at the official site!

  • Virtualy Lucrative
CNet is reporting that Sony Online Entertainment has scored big with Station Exchange. Wall Street traders were too busy selling Paladins to talk to us, so we'll pretend that they said this:

" And judging by the results of Station Exchange's first 30 days of operation, during which the system saw more than $180,000 in transactions, quite a number of EQ2 players have cashed in on the exchange, which allows gamers to trade real cash for virtual items used in the game. "
