Gods & Heroes: Rome Rising News

  • You've read the interview that I did with Stieg. Now, you can read a few more questions that have been answered in Deo's Space on the official Forums.

    2. Grappling and other collision effects in the movies are awesome, but usually these effects (in other games) are achieved at the expense of using "Barbie doll" character models that have very similar, if not exact, morphology. To what extent, if any, can players change the shape of their character's bodies in character creation? How extensive is character creation overall?

There are tradeoffs to a system like this it is true, but we’ve done our very best to minimize them. We actually allow a great deal of options for body types, not only as presets, but we also allow different areas of the body to be scaled larger or smaller. Our character creation will allow similar facial customization, right down to the size and shape of the nose!

  • It's probably safe to say that I really look forward to Deo's Space every week. I know I'm not supposed to play favorites, but I'm really looking forward to Gods & Heroes: Rome Rising. This week is a great post on the Minion AI.

As usual, it has been a busy week for us here in the office, and like always, I'm taking 5 to drop the good word for you all. As we approach E3, my days seem to just blur together with a never-ending pile of "high priority" projects. I swear it seems like I just celebrated Easter with my family just last week, and yet, here it is again! Where do the days go?

Regardless, the time that has gone by has been productive and we will all feel a lot better once E3 has come and gone. Bear with us until that time, because it is important that we not only get through this schedule, but that we utilize all the resources available to us to have a maximum impact on the gaming world. Yes, we have lots of information we're anxious to give out. Yes, you're going to get to see it all. No, I can't post it today!

    Read the rest! Do it!

  • Gods & Heroes: From Mortality to Perpetual-ity

Perpetual and SOE are collaborating on the once near-defunct MMO Gods and Heroes: Rome Rising, and that sound you hear? It's the games fairly sizable fanbase rejoicing. GameZone speaks with Perpetual's design director Stieg Hedlund to update us on the game's progress:

Q: As this is based on the Roman era, how authentic to the time frame is the game? Will family have much to do with status within the society?

Stieg: Well our game is a blend of history and mythology, so discussing it terms of authenticity is a bit odd. However, we do enjoy the flavor and detail provided by this backdrop a great deal, and the characters, environments and stories of the game are deeply infused with this material. We’ve really done a great deal of research in both history and myth, but our focus has always been on presenting what we’ve learned in a way that entertains. Certainly people could learn a thing or two about Roman culture from our game, but they’re guaranteed to have fun doing so.

  • I had to link this today. I'm really looking forward to Gods and Heroes. I think that this is a pretty good summation of the game

The surprising things these days is what little is actually surprising in most new MMOs. I suppose that's the case with a lot of different types and genres of games at this point. Innovation is hard to come by. Companies are less willing to splurge and try new things. But while much of Gods & Heroes isn't completely surprising there's plenty of little innovations and evolutions to go around that could turn this into an MMO to watch with features that players can appreciate for different reasons than the normal massively multiplayer game.

  • Just in case you haven't read it yet, there is a new Deo's Space at the Official Gods and Heroes Forums.

The game is looking hot, so much so that when we showed this to several executives, one of them said that this was easily the best looking MMO he had ever seen. Sure, we've got the visual look to make all the video cards scream, but really that's only the surface of what we're preparing to unleash upon the PC gaming world. In truth, it's the squad combat that is looking incredible and let me tell you, it is really amazing to see how this team has risen to conquer the inherent challenges of implementing an AI-controlled system of minions.

  • No I'm not talking about the sugar.

There's a new Deo's Space up on the official forums. It's always a good read. This one takes on MMOs in general.

The problem comes when, as the gamer, I am unable to see what really goes on in game development. I can't say that I blame anyone for this, namely because nobody wants to talk about the things that might give them the wrong impression of the team. The words "Feature Creep" has become the worst four-letter word in the industry and is considered to be the most notorious killer of the single-player game. Feature creep is difficult for everyone because it is the "what we want for this game at the expense of what is already in the game." More often than not, it is trying to cram more features into the game rather than spending time polishing the ones that are already in, thus leading to a never-ending cycle of adding/fixing/adding. The biggest hit comes to the fact that if we continue to allow the feature list to grow and grow, we would never be able to ship the game. A good producer knows when to call it quits and just ship a polished product.

  • I'm a few days late on this one. It's hard to find the news area of their new website :) However.... The Gods and Heroes Official Forums has a short interview with Stieg Hedlund.

Right now, what is your favorite part of Gods and Heroes?

I really like the action combat. For example we've got a move called "the ladder" which involves jumping on the opponent's back and applying both a sleeper hold and a leg scissors until he passes out. It’s awesome both to see move from ancient pankration, a combination of boxing and wrestling, come to life in our game, as well as to see this type of intricate interaction in an MMO.

  • GameCloud has a Pre-E3 Gods and Heroes article up for your viewing pleasure.

The game itself is action oriented with just a little turn based gameplay in order to keep it from being a totally twitch based title. In watching the developers play the game itself it's clear that there will be some massive conflicts in Gods and Heroes. In one scene our group of characters encounters a city siege from the outside with Roman troops firing catapults and aiming their arrows against the enemy which includes huge giants that were seen throwing unlucky troopers around like rag dolls. Another mytholgical creature we saw in action was the three headed dog the Chimera who uses all three heads to make you and anyone else he doesn't like into mince meat.

I've seen the news and the news is good. They also state that Perpetual will be handling all aspects of the game. SOE will simply PR, Market and Distribute the game.

  • It's not a surprise or a secret that I've become a Perpetual Fangrrl. I like what they're doing and I believe in the products that they're creating. Gods & Heroes looks just flat out amazing and even though I haven't seen anything solid from Star Trek Online yet I am that much of a fan of both the genre and the developer that I'm already hooked. So I troll the G&H boards with regularity. This is the offering for today. Deo's Space Blog for 3/8/06 In it he speaks about the deal with Sony and some new features of the game.

Now as far as the announcement of the god system change, I found out about the change several weeks ago and I talked it over with a couple of people internally. After thinking about it, we realized that the changes were so significant that it would require a massive revamp of the “gods” section of the website. At the time our new web designer, Will, hadn’t started with the company and was at least a week or two out from starting. I had already begun work on all the written revisions of the new website and we had established an internal official launch date of the new website, so the decision was made to simply hold off on that announcement until we launched the new design. This was my call and due to all the factors combined, I still believe it is the best one.

It leaves me wondering if I should send over cookies and chocolate milk with a note begging to let me into a beta. Any beta will do!
