  • I'll take the Pu Pu Platter build...

Arena.net's Guild of the Week is a European guild called "Dynasty Warriors," which takes Chinese history seriously; requiring guildies to take names from the celestial lands. If you ever wanted to get a feel for a Guild Wars competitive match, take a look at this article; it features an interesting play-by-play commentary on a team arena "capture the flag" match:

Members of the Dynasty Warriors guild believe that one of the keys to a successful battle is an understanding of the value of patience and knowing when to take risks, a lesson they learned from a war of attrition in one of their memorable guild battles. Set amid the foreboding backdrop of the Isle of the Dead guild hall, the battle started off fiercely as both teams struggled to control the flag stand. Though heavy losses were incurred on both sides, the DW team was finally able to hold the flag. The tenacity of their opponents was not to be underestimated, however, as they fought back to reclaim their flag...

Did they hold the flag? Probably, since the article honors them! But see for yourself in the Guild Wars "Guild of the Week" article at the official site.

Boomtown has a profile of one of the upcoming City of Villains bad guys, Black Scorpion. Also mentioned is a female villain, Silver Mantis. P.Diddy, or is it just Diddy, or perhaps P, was stunned and appalled that he was not included as a villain and exclaimed:

" In a continuing effort to provide an assessment of the organization
known as Arachnos and the most significant super-powered threats within
it, I present in this report detailed information regarding the villain
    known as Black Scorpion.

  • Houston, we have a MMOG.
The Houston Chronicle has posted a quick little ditty about Guild Wars that takes a brief, but focused look at the game. Vin Diesel can play four Guild Wars characters at once using only the powers of his mind. His mind powers had nothing to do with the following, though they could have if he had wanted them to:

"It's a sad fact that most massively multiplayer online games are dominated by gamers with way too much time on their hands.
Building a character and maintaining relationships within an online world often demand more time and energy than a casual gamer can muster. Guild Wars , a PC-based online game from ArenaNet and Austin-based NCSoft, seeks to change that by making it easier to join."

  • But Tolkien did it without a database!

Lord of the Rings Online Developer Chris "NobOrBob" Foster shows off one of Turbine's myriad tools for game development, this one focusing on quest implementation. With this much storyline behind a certifiably graphics-intensive MMO, and with such a devout LotR playerbase, it's a good thing Turbine's streamlining things where they can.

For all these reasons and a few others, one of the biggest changes we made to the quest system was to replace the old quest file format with a new one. This unified quest file format contained nearly all of the information needed to place a quest in the world: the steps involved, the dialogue that each NPC says, the item that the monster should drop when it dies. In addition, the new quest file made it much easier to re-use the same characters on multiple quests...

  • World of Warcraft Servers Trouble Europe.
The continued problems with the European World of Warcraft servers have prompted Blizzard to compensate the players. European players were unavailable for comment, apparently all playing on the servers that work, but we did track down one troubled Frenchman who told us:

" As European World of Warcraft players grow increasingly frustrated with the lagging issues that continue to plague many servers, developer Blizzard has pledged to compensate players for their trouble.
"Two days' compensation will be offered to everyone, even those who remain unaffected by the problems," a Blizzard spokesperson told Eurogamer.
"In addition, everyone will receive level one and a half extra rest so they level up quicker." "

" Since the last World of Warcraft Battle Plan, much has happened in the Warcraft universe. We’ve launched Blackwing Lair, the highest level dungeon in the game, we launched World of Warcraft in China and Singapore with great success, and work continues on adding even more content for our players.

BlizzCon is quickly approaching, and we're preparing the lineup of programs, dev chats, and the concert to be held at our inaugural event. I’m very happy to announce that we'll have the first public showing of the expansion for World of Warcraft at BlizzCon. Attendees will be able to view the work that is going into the project and hear some of the eagerly awaited details. To those of you who won’t be able to make it to the show, please keep an eye out for the game magazines that will be hitting newsstands right around BlizzCon, because some of them will feature in-depth articles on the expansion with plenty of information about how World of Warcraft will be evolving.

For this Battle Plan, we want to take the opportunity to look ahead to what our players can expect in the coming months leading up to BlizzCon and the expansion announcement.
