FusionFall + World of Warcraft + Pirates of the Burning Sea + Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning + Lord of the Rings Online + Age of Conan: Unchained Features, Guides, and more

  • There are new beasts to be had in World of Warcraft's upcoming expansion Burning Crusade.

The orcs of Outland were not the only ones to suffer the Burning Legion's demonic corruption. The Broken, led by the great Akama, fell prey to the
demons' sinister influence, and just like the orcs, they too were changed by the corruption. Though they lost some of their former powers, the Broken still present a clear danger to all of Illidan's enemies throughout Outland. It almost seems like a miracle that the Broken somehow managed to preserve their shamanistic heritage, yet no one can say for sure how many of their traditions are still intact. From the safety of the fortified villages the Broken hold in Outland, they lord over their lesser cousins, the wretched Lost Ones.

Orcs always get a bad name.

  • Vivendi Universal subsidiary Blizzard Entertainment announced on Friday that it has invited Chinese online game company The9 (Nasdaq: NCTY) to negotiate the expansion set to World of Warcraft (WoW), The Burning Crusade. The9 is Blizzard's current partner for WoW in mainland China, and also owns 30 percent of the company operating WoW in Taiwan. According to the release the expansion is currently planned for 2007 in mainland China, whereas previous expectations had the expansion hitting China in late 2006. According to several industry analysts, The9's contract with Blizzard for World of Warcraft already gives The9 the rights to operate any expansion of the game in mainland China.

I just can't think of any pithy comments on this one. Am I losing my sense of humor or is this just something that says meh to me? One can never tell

  • I'm normally not a rumor poster. However, this one has me intrigued. I know that Microsoft is pushing quite a few games toward the 360 market. However, knowing the complexity of Funcom games, I wouldn't think that it wouldn't be successfully ported. GameSpot's Rumor Control has the story.

According to the poster, the Funcom developers "showed a trailer with a pretty intense draw distance apparantly [sic] as well as Conan himself wielding a morning star which seemed totally realistic in how the spiked ball would behave due to its weight and momentum." Then, "a question was asked about if they were thinking about other platforms than PC...then the spokesman [Bjorn Sundquist] made a kauf [sic] gesture saying *kauf*Xbox360*kauf*." (Emphasis added.)

Thanks to MMORPGDOT for pointing me in the right direction for this story.

  • Encourage Grouping; Support Soloing

Shayalyn is an antisocial gamer. How can upcoming MMOGs like Lord of the Rings Online: Shadows of Angmar score points with players like her? Simple, says she: they have to encourage group play, yet provide meaningful solo experiences, yet avoid making soloing the best means of character progression. Well, okay, maybe it's not that simple.

We know that players will be able to solo in LOTRO, and we know that the solo quests won’t consist of the sort of tedium we’ve seen in other games, specifically the “Collect 2,500 flesh-eating fungi spores for Alchemist Fiddlesticks” sort. The ability to enjoy meaningful solo experiences, if even on a limited basis, is music to my antisocial ears. But what is Turbine doing to facilitate grouping, the core of a game designed around the tale of a Fellowship’s cooperative efforts toward victory over evil?

Has Turbine worked out the magic formula? Read Fellowship of the Ding to learn more.

  • SoloHammer?

Another week and another piece of common content from the TenTonHammer network! This week Ratboy discusses the interesting "solo" aspects that may be seen in Warhammer Online. Looking at the reasons for solo content being used, this article tries to discuss all of the possible facets of Warhammer Online's solo content. Here's a peek:

I have to regress back to my earlier days of playing World of Warcraft to really get into the discussion of Massively Solo Player games. It was in my first shot at the WoW Beta that I came to realize just how big the world was and how many players were involved, it was more specifically the first gryphon flight of the game that gave me such an impression of the world. Warhammer Online is likely to prove it can meet or exceed the scope of other existing games, as instead of centering on the battles between factions (Alliance VS Horde in the case of WoW), Warhammer centers around the battles of various different races (Dwarves VS. Orcs, Humans VS Chaos, & Elves VS Dark Elves).

  • How does endgame WoW treat avid soloers?

Messiah, our World of Warcraft site lead, has addressed the soloing question from a variety of angles. This week, he looks at the question from a level 60 perspective:

In most MMO's friendships and communication skills are formed very early on in the game. You grow with other players, you learn to rely on them for help and to help them in return. In WoW, with the game being so easy to solo, that generally does not happen. I have gotten to level 60 and gone into instances with other players, then had to explain to them what an instance was (i.e. what that big shimmering door was!!!). I have had to explain tactics, pulling, tanking, off tanking, aggro management, protecting cloth wearers, and much much more; all to players who are my own level but chose to never group before they ran out of things to do solo.

  • For some reason I've woken up with disco music playing in my head. It's a pretty far leap from what I usually listen to. Why am I telling you this? Because as I read this new Priest Archetype Preview for Age of Conan, I have KC and the Sunshine band running through my brain. Someone.. make the pain stop!

Priests in Age of Conan are a step beyond the stereotype of a vulnerable healer - they can call forth the power of their deities to smite and expose their enemies whilst protecting and aiding their allies! Whilst the priest is certainly the cornerstone of a good team in that they provide the vital restoration skills required to keep their allies standing in battle, they are so much more than that as well.

Priests draw on the strength of their faith and their abilities are derived from the power of their respective deities. Each god provides unique aspects to their followers, from the lethal poisons of the snake god Set to the elemental powers of nature itself harnessed by the Stormcaller.

On a better note, I just got Ten Ton Hammer's E3 appointment set up. Are you excited? I sure as heck am!
