EverQuest II + Freaky Creatures

  • Sony has put up four new Screenshots of it's upcoming expansion Kingdom of Sky. They've also given us a release date. February 21, 2006 is the big day!

Now like most of you old EQ players out there, I'm sure that this new expansion reminds you greately of the Plane of Sky. And if you were in Ellar Dobluth on The Rathe server with me in the early days, this also reminds you of Eero getting his butt kicked by the short kid after mouthing off to him. Good times... good times..

  • After multiple shortie packs (what I call adventure packs) Sony is releasing it's new Expansion pack Kindom of Sky. No release date was announced.

"Kingdom of Sky offers something for all of our EverQuest II players," said Laura Naviaux, senior brand marketing manager, Sony Online Entertainment. "For the seasoned EQII player, Kingdom of Sky increases the amount of high level content in a world filled with intrigue and the potential destruction of Norrath by the evil dragon lords. The second expansion pack brings the excitement of dragon battles and is timed to coincide with the newly-added Player vs. Player (PvP) action."

  • GamerGod wraps up it's three part interview with Everquest 2 Community Manager BlackGuard.

Nine: Being part of the creative team involved with EQ2, would you say you have more of an advantage than the average player has in terms of knowing plot details for storylines, NPC’s for quest turn ins, and general information that the average consumer has to find out on their own?

I have the ability to take advantage of the information available to me, but that usually ruins the fun. To be honest, if I get stuck on a quest, I do the same thing that everyone else does (ask in guild chat, bug people in the "LFG" channel on our server that nobody looks for a group in, or hit up a website with spoilers).

In terms of lore and plotlines, I probably do know a little more than the average player. That may change in the future as we start releasing more and more lore as weekly features. EverQuest II has a heck of a lot of lore to it, and we want people to know more about it because the stories are part of the heart of the game.

  • Part two of their three part series is up with EverQuest 2 Community Manager Blackguard.

Four: Having worked your way around the different positions within SOE, what would you say was your most favorite, and why?

I've been in QA, Community Relations, and was even an Apprentice Designer for a while. My favorite so far is Community Relations Manager, because I get to do a little bit of everything. I love working with communities, and I love influencing the direction of the game (read: ranting and raving to people in person or via really really long emails). This position is a perfect fit, because, obviously, I work a lot with the community, and I'm in a Lead position on the game team.

Uh.. yeah! Good times.. good times!

  • OGaming has a fluff piece up with Heather Graham, SOE's Antonia BayleShe's like.. kind of a gamer.. but like.. not really.. cause like.. she has better things to do..

"It was an amazing experience to take part in. I was really pleased by how good of a fit it was, too."OGaming: Do you actually play the game now that it’s out and in the public eye?

HG: Once in a while. And if I do, it’s under an anonymous character, the same way that anybody else would. That’s part of the fun: getting to not be yourself for at least a little while…

Looks like she really tries to be nice about the whole gaming issue throughout the interview. SOE must still be paying her to do press.

  • Yes, I'm bitter!
Eurogamer gives EverQuest 2: Desert of Flames a 7/10 for lack of low-to-mid-level content. This is like the 15th review I've read that's all about how great DoF is, then, bam! it hits the "too high level" concrete bridge abutment. Every MMO expansion is going to be geared to the top tier of the playerbase, folks. If you can point out one expansion that's absolutely chock full of lowbie content, email me and I'll eat my hat or something!

Like the Trials of Obi-Wan expansion for Star Wars Galaxies, Desert of Flames falls down slightly not because it's not entertaining, not because it lacks content, not because it doesn't play well, but because its scope is too narrow to include everyone. If you're a high level character who's done everything in EQ2, then this expansion is a must, but hey, next time guys, release something that all your players can enjoy.

By this logic, "The Burning Crusade" ought to get a 7/10 too, but I betcha it won't; it's WoWftw. Blah. /rant off Eurogamer scorches EverQuest 2's "Desert of Flames" expansion.

  • Wanted: Dead or Respawned.
The good folks at our EQ2 Community Site have posted Norrath's Most Wanted, a list of the most popular and elusive creatures in Everquest 2.

" Throughout Everquest 2, you will find thousands upon thousands of goblins, orcs, gnolls, etc. to cleave with your blade but some creatures you will notice are just a little out of the ordinary.   Like that guy that feels comfortable enough to wear a pink shirt to work, these creatures will stand out above the rest.  They are tougher, carry more treasure, and are in many cases intentionally sought out and dispatched as soon as they appear.   Below is a guide to where you can find these unique beasts and hunt them down.  Be warned however, that waiting for some to spawn requires more patience than sitting in a McDonald's drive-thru. • I'd love to see the Desert of Flames travel brochure.
IGN has posted a review of EverQuest 2: Desert of Flames. Steve Butts does an exemplary job of describing the highs and lows of tthe first EverQuest 2 expansion.

" Ever since launch, the developers of EverQuest II have been hard at work bringing more and more content online. It seems like the game grows a little every week with new areas, new quests, new playable races and new...well, everything. But as if to say that they can't give everything away for free, they've recently released the first official retail expansion pack. Like the old original EQ expansions, the first EverQuest II expansion introduces several large zones and tons of new content. "

  • So tell me a little bit about your career history, EverQuest 2...
If games had resumes, this one would be impressive. Ryan "Blackguard" Shwayder, SOE's EQ2 Community Manager, lists the incredible amount of content added to the game in the past year:

Since launch, an enormous amount of content has been added to EverQuest II at no additional cost to EverQuest II subscribers. In addition to changes that made the game more fun for soloists and group players alike, more than 1100 quests have been added to the game since launch on November 8th. We've added more than 1200 new items to the game, including more craftable items for tradeskillers, and more loot around the world. Almost 400 new spells have been added and we've worked diligently to make sure our spell effects are as eye-catching as they are powerful. Recently, we added 8 new areas to the world, so there are now well over 100 zones in the world of EverQuest II to explore.

So Blizzard & World of Warcraft, where's the beef? All you've made are promises so far. ( I have to try and bring balance to the force, you see.) Check out EverQuest 2's new content in the year since launch and the official site.

  • When forum trolls write reviews...
CVG gives EQ2's "Desert of Flames" expansion at score of 75 / 100, citing a lack of polish (but there are plenty of other Europeans playing, har har!) and a continuance of SOE's "feather ruffling" tradition of Combat Changes. Let the nastiness commence:

Poor old Sony. Given the massive debacle that was the Star Wars Galaxies Combat Upgrade, you'd think that its developer - Sony Online Entertainment (SOE) - would steer clear of using that phrase ever again. Not so. With the release of the Desert Of Flames expansion for the underrated EverQuest II - a game easily as enjoyable as WOW, but with half the calories... Sorry, I mean players - came an all-singing, all-dancing, all-existing player-base-annoying 'combat upgrade'. SOE must be cursed.

Yea, they're pretty much being populist WoW bastages about it. Check out CVG's EverQuest 2: Desert of Flames review for more ganky ire.
