EverQuest II + Star Wars Galaxies

  • It takes a "guru" to get these screens.

I try not to wear my emotions on my sleeve too much, being the objective journalist that I am (/cough), but I'm a little bitter towards myself on this one. EQ2 Guru boasts a series of screenshots that your truly should have gotten- had I not patched the test server client instead of the beta client, thus missing the grand tour.

Check out these exclusive Desert of Flames screenshots exploring the different areas and zones from the upcoming EQ2 expansion.

/sigh, go to EQ2 Guru to see the damn screenshots based on the "Desert of Flames" expansion due out tomorrow (9.13.05). And I'll go check "Beta Testing On Live MMOs for Dummies" out of the library.

  • Cherries Jubilee? No, that's a "Dessert of Flames"!

With less than a week to go for the heavy-duty Everquest 2 expansion "Desert of Flmaes" launch, we're pleased to offed you an exclusive interview with Ryan "Blackguard" Shwayder, Sony Online Entertainment's EQ2 Community Manager.

Want to know how to track your faction standing with the 70-80 NPC factions? What do know what the how adventures of all levels can fight in the in the new Quake 3-esque arena system? And the big question: when exactly will the much-discussed "Combat Changes" go live? TTH brings you answers to all these questions and more!

"TTH: With regards to expansions, various MMOs have been criticized for catering too heavily to the high-level game while failing to keep the low-level game fresh and compelling for newcomers. While "Desert of Flames" is primarily geared to level 45-60 players, could you comment on what's in store for lower-level players in this expansion?

Ryan "Blackguard" Shwayder: Players of all levels will be able to participate in Arena Champions, our scenario-based PvP system that is part of Desert of Flames. All players in guilds will have access to guild vaults, which are a feature of Desert of Flames but will be accessible even to those without the expansion..."

More, lots more, in the TTH Everquest 2" "Desert of Flames" SOE Q&A!

  • The Total Experience, and by total we mean most of it.
Game Chronicles has posted a review of Star Wars Galaxies: The Total Experience. Our top secret sources have told us that upon seeing the review Chewbacca turned to Harrison Ford and roared:

" Personally, I played the original when it first came out for a solid three months, was in a strong guild (Sturmgrenadier-Starsider), and had a blast. After awhile though, the grind of gaining experience, bugs, and limited content got to me, and I left for greener pastures. I was very intrigued to try this title again to say the least. "

  • In-game /donate command advances funds to help Red Cross Katrina efforts.

Please help if you can, a link is included at the bottom for non- EQ2 gamers.

Hurricane Katrina has left an incredible wake of destruction across the Mid-Atlantic States. Sony Online Entertainment would like to ask you to take a moment to make a donation to the American Red Cross in order to help alleviate some of the suffering.

In EverQuest II we have added the /donate command, type in /donate to be taken to the American Red Cross’s Hurricane 2005 relief page. For those members of SOE Communities in other games, you can contribute using this link, American Red Cross. The American Red Cross will process your donation and make sure that it is put to maximum use to help those whose lives have been affected by the hurricane.

Additionally, for our 13,000+ players actually in the affected areas, we will be suspending billing until such time as they are able to play again. In addition, any items or structures in any of our games, which decay over time, will be preserved until the user’s next login.

Thank you in advance for your support and generosity.

    The SOE Family

Once again, click here to give to the American Red Cross directly.

On behalf of all of us at TTH, our thoughts and prayers are with the Hurricane Katrina victims.

  • SWG producer Grant McDaniel brought back gamers' questions from Leipzig on the upcoming "Trials of Obi-Wan" expansion.

He won't be confronting sticky issues like why the Death Star had to circle Yavin to blow up its 4th moon. Dood, it blows up planets, and if Yavin is a gas giant, couldn't the DS just fire through it to bring enough widespread destruction on Yavin 4 to undermine the rebel cause. Don't get me started! Nothing like good Hollywood, though.

    1. Is this a Jedi expansion?
Absolutely not. This expansion has content and adventures for all types of Star Wars Galaxies players.
    2. I'm not a Jedi...so is there any reason for me to obtain the Trials of Obi-Wan Expansion?
Of course. All players will be able to converse with Obi-Wan and help him on his quests. Additionally, there will be many other quests as well as other reasons to explore the planet of Mustafar. And, the planet itself is so completely unique when compared to the rest of the planets in our game, that I think many people will just enjoy exploring and adventuring anywhere they can. (A lot more than Anakin!)
    3. Trials of Obi-Wan: Will there be a new playable species? How about new NPC species?
We did not add any new playable species. However, Mustafar is home to two new native NPC species that you will find in the expansion (more on them later).

  • A world filled with pseudo-Eqyptian themes

SOE shows off its planned mid-September Everquest 2 expansion with a new movie: "A World Filled with Danger." No "stranger danger" like they taught us about in grade school though; we're fairly certain a djinn will not float up on a spacious flying carpet and offer you candy.

{Ed. note: no description given, just lots of dangerous looking creatures like a evil genies, chromed out dragons, Greenpeace protesters, and Vin Diesel.]

The newest DoF movie, now live on the Everquest 2 "Desert of Flames" site in the "Media" section.

  • A Jedi's strength flows from the Force. And from a coming revamp.

SWGVault sits down for an interview with LucasArts producer Julio Torres for a Q&A session that reads like a cry for help. "Help us Julio... you're out only hope!" Okay, enough with the Star Wars quotes, sorry about that.

We realize that the Jedi system in SWG as a whole needs to be re-evaluated, so we are currently discussing options to address this. Our goal is to make the next implementation resonate to the needs of the game and the Jedi players. To do this, we really need to give it design time and play time, the exact date of when we can release a great FRS system. It’s not set yet, but we are currently working on it to get out to the public as soon as possible.

What other changes are the SWG devs planning to include in future updates? Read the rest of the Star Wars Galaxies developer Q&A at SWGVault.

  • "HO" isn't just something you yell at the double dutch bus!

EQ2 players know that a Heroic Opportunity is a set of coordinated group-member actions that, if properly completed in a short amount of time, lead to damage bonuses or heals and buffs for the group, though Neddie Seagoon (understandably) describes the process as a "Hopeless Opportunity. A game device whereby a group is instructed to execute an elaborate series of spells in the heat of battle demanding the intricate timing and delivery of the Cirque de Soleil acrobatic corps, while actually flailing at the keyboard with all the co-ordination, planning and dignity of a frenzied bunch of cornered raccoons. A cruel practical joke courtesy of the EQ2 designers."

Well, stay with me friends, but I think Lycanthor just helped HOs enter the EQ2 realm of combat possibilities...

After shopping around for a good, up-to-date Heroic Opportunities reference, site contributor Lycanthor of Highkeep server found that there simply wasn't one anywhere! Did he turn around and walk away from the gaping hole in that crucial pile of maps and reference data we keep close at hand while playing EQ2? Heck no! He developed his own graphical HO reference and asked us to help him spread the good news! Our thanks to Lycanthor for a superbly done HO guide, we're pleased as punch to host your fine work!

"Heroic Opportunities are free damage, power, health and other buffs- so why not use them? Lycanthor of Highkeep has created an easy-to-follow guide to allow you to execute and switch out HOs effectively. Print out the 1-page guide for sessions with large groups, or the individual pages for a detailed look at your archetype's triggered HO possibilities!"

  • Who needs Korea when EQ2 has "Combat Changes"?!
The infamous "Combat Changes" loom on the EQ2 horizon, making a number of folks restless. This week's pseudo-therpeutic, semi-humorous, 100% fun column walks one quavering Warden through the early stages of acceptance and previews some of the changes too! Then the article quickly quickly gets out of hand as yours truly discusses my proposed "Combat Changes!" Check it out!

"Of course, the Star Wars Galaxies veterans (well, at least the ones that left the game to play EQ2) started having sweaty flashbacks when they heard that SOE was out to redo the pummeling procedure in their newfound home. As things in EQ2 are in no way as bad as SWG was in the pre-CU days (where botting was the new ganking, and you and your friends could eat the nastiest PvE mobs alive with ease with the right combination of armor, weaponry, and buffs), we'll likely not see what many considered a total over-reaction that threw the entertainers out with the bathwater. And let's spend a moment in eulogy of the Hutt dancers, cantina musicians, and other ways the SWG revamp chagrined its pure artisans. SWG sought to be as novel as the 70s cultural phenomenon that spawned it, and SWG's "Combat Changes" in many ways returned the game to its MMOG roots at the expense of entertainer as an viable and attractive subclass offering. EQ2 is pretty down-home-comfort in its RPG approach. So in EQ2 née SWG, there were fewer points of contact for play imbalances and player malignment in the first place."

  • A Treasure Chest! Or, maybe just an update. You decide.
Sony Online Entertainment has posted the latest EverQuest 2 Treasure Chest. At the mention of a treasure chest the TTH offices became infested with pirates. Ninjas were called in to remove the infestation, but all we could get out of them was this:

"Sometimes it's hard to find the buried treasures contained within the EverQuest II forums. The Treasure Chest highlights useful, insightful, or entertaining posts that you may want to check out. Get your treasure maps and shovels ready--we're about to discover a Treasure Chest!

You can read the entire EverQuest 2 Treasure Chest Update at The Official Site.
