  • Ahoy Ye Matey! An Interview with Former Community Manager Blackguard

    With one of our developers and our Community Relations Manager off grazing greener pastures, the EverQuest II community has felt the tug of loss over this last month. Ryan "Blackguard" Shwayder has left big shoes to fill for sure, but even as we say goodbye to our beloved CM as he heads back to Colorado to start on new, real-life adventures, we want to never forget that before Blackguard was the CM, he was a gamer. Please sit down and take a moment with Savanja and Blackguard as they chit chat about gaming, EQII, and blogging!

    No single event really inspired me to get into gaming as a career that I can recall. I've really just loved playing video games for my entire life, and started reading various books on game design and development in high school. I made a bunch of mods for various games as a hobby and ran fansites, which got me close to several developers. They all seemed to enjoy their jobs and I liked pretty much all of the devs I met, and the opportunity to work on EQII was timed well for me (and it was the right game) so I went ahead and took it. I've pretty much wanted to make games for as long as I can remember.

  • Is It Tolkien Yet? -- Art & Design in Lord of the Rings Online

    Gamespy has posted in interview with Turbine. The interview covers Tolkien, good, evil, and the importance of pronouns in Lord of the Rings Online.

    "Tolkien's world is absolutely huge, so you need to focus on what works." The speaker is Cardell Kerr, the game's Design Director. He's one of several Turbine employees clustered around a conference room table. Over the remains of our lunch we've begun discussing the genesis of The Lord of the Rings Online. The game was originally under development with Vivendi Universal as Middle-Earth Online, where it had acquired a reputation as a game in trouble. Turbine acquired all the rights to the game as well as the full-ownership of the assets of Middle-Earth Online in March 2005. Once the company took possession they needed to seriously consider just what to do with it.

    IGN has posted their preview of Echoes of Faydwer, the upcoming expansion for EverQuest II. Keep reading to see if they had similar impressions as the other previews.

    On November 14, EverQuest II adventurers will get the opportunity to purchase all sorts of new features with the release of the third expansion, Echoes of Faydwer. According to Sony Online, the title will be available in both retail box form and as an online download. The download will be priced lower than the boxed version, since it'll only be the expansion. The original EQII, its two previous expansions, and Echoes of Faydwer will be included in boxed copy.

    One of the advantages of massively multiplayer online role-playing games that let you play in persistent virtual worlds with thousands of other players is that they can evolve and grow over time. The world of EverQuest II will experience another growth spurt with the release of the upcoming third expansion, EverQuest II: Echoes of Faydwer. With Echoes of Faydwer, the designers at Sony Online Entertainment continue to tie together the worlds of EverQuest II and the original EverQuest. Faydwer was an area in the original game, and the traditional home of the elves, dwarves, and gnomes is back and better than before.

    Recently, we had an opportunity to ask some very specific questions of the Developers on things related to PvP and Crafting.     The star of the Turbine Entertainment booth at PAX was Lord of the Rings Online. In taking on this second massive license, Turbine has a mighty weight on their shoulders and expectations to live up to.

    “This is an MMO for people who love MMOs,” explained Lead Systems Designer Nik Davidson. He made special note of how the game had not tried to “reinvent the wheel” when it came to things like interface, controls and basic mechanism. Lord of the Rings Online will not have change for change’s sake.

  • As I wandered the gaming exhibition area of the Penny Arcade Expo, I wondered what exactly people would want to know about Lord of the Rings Online. There has been a flood of information released by Turbine in the past weeks and most of the games major systems have been talked about. The systems we don’t know about were not going to be shown at PAX. What is a reporter to do? It is not easy for me to place myself in the position of an unknowing fan because I actually receive a bit more information about the game. That’s right, I know stuff. The desire to share all I know is very great. Unfortunately, I am limited to telling you about what I saw or could have seen at PAX. This may sound very restrictive, but there are so many small details that are to be learned. I will try to touch on and grade a few major areas of the game. These grades are based only on the current version that was on display at PAX.
