Dark Age of Camelot arose as Everquest's first fantasy MMOG competitor two years after the reigning fantasy MMOG was released. Originally developed by Mythic, DAoC was scooped up by EA along with Mythic (now BioWare Mythic), making it part of the large EA conglomerate. When it was introduced, DAoC was considered to be very similar to Everquest in many ways, but eventually they shed that thought process and began to accumulate a popular following of their own.

Along with offering some incentives to alleviate camping spawn points, make customizable armor, and its enhanced graphics, the game's guiding principles capitalized on one gaming aspect many felt was absent in Everquest: truly integrated player vs. player (or "RvR" - realm vs. realm, in DAoC). PvP action, that has tangible impact in the virtual world.

DAoC introduced one other important technological element to the fantasy RPG scene: for lack of a better term we'll call it "dynamic zone loading." Everquest used what became known as a traditional zone architecture, splitting the world into small zones that must be loaded sequentially while gameplay is suspended. DAoC's "zones"- called regions- are extremely large swaths of terrain that load in a "bubble" around the player; in other words the game constantly loads while the player travels.

Dark Age of Camelot generates revenue through monthly subscriptions.

  • "Darkness Rising" in DAoC's Future
Mythic Entertainment has released a realm-load of information on its upcoming expansion for Dark Age of Camelot: Darkness Rising. Apparently they're out to make something truly dark. Player-controlled mounts, subclassing, and the title of "Champion of the Realm" await loyal players? Will RvR action put on the back burner to make DAoC another FFXI clone? Film at 11.

"In Darkness Rising, an evil uprising threatens the land and the mightiest heroes in the Realms are called into service. For the first time in Dark Age of Camelot, players will be able to earn the right to be called a Champion of the Realm. Players become Champions by exploring new zones and revisiting altered lands while investigating the mysterious uprising to discover its sinister underpinnings. By performing this service for their Realm, players achieve new levels of advancement and gain the ability to wield class-specific Champion Weapons. Darkness Rising also introduces majestic player-controlled horses and other more fantastic steeds which can be ridden into conflict in the war between the Realms. "

  • More fun than a Mongolian cluster... nevermind.

This week's edition of the DAoC Herald focuses on a flurry of questions regarding the upcoming server reclustering announced this week:

Q: (Insert question on clustering and timers here)

A: I deliberately skipped the most popular set of questions this week, because there are a number of things still under discussion in terms of limits, timers (as you saw from the poll), accessing your characters in different realms on the same cluster, grandfather clauses, and creating new characters on the clusters. I also don't have a new implementation schedule for the proposed new clusters yet. The information I have on the Herald from earlier this year is outdated and incorrect.

Have a DAoC question you'd like answered in the most minimal, roundabout way possible? Details on how to get your submission its negative two seconds of fame, as well as the rest of this article, here!

  • Yummy Clusters of Server Goodness
Mythic Entertainment announced a new clustering schema. Clusters are a way of preserving a server's home community for aged MMOGs while making the Realm vs. Realm and Frontier zones (areas where high level adventurers roam) one zone for 2-4 servers.

"Guinevere will be clustered with Nimue and Percival... Merlin will be clustered with Palomides, Bors, and Gawaine... Lancelot will be clustered with Iseult, Kay, and Pellinor. Galahad/Morgan le Fay will be clustered with Bedevere, Igraine, and Tristan."

Go here to see a timetable for these moves.

  • Joust, eat with your hands and act like a pompous fool.
Mythic Entertainment is inviting past Dark Age of Camelot players to come back for free. It is with no certainty at all that we assume, probably wrongly that King Arthur once wrote this:

"FAIRFAX, VA - July 14, 2005 - Mythic Entertainment, developer and publisher of massively multiplayer online games including "Dark Age of Camelot" and the recently announced "Warhammer" MMO, today announced the "Come Back to Camelot" Campaign, which invites past "Dark Age of Camelot" players to experience the game's upgrades and additions free of charge for ten days. From July 14th through the 24th, anyone with a retired account can log into the game, and their character will be waiting for them, just as they left it.
"The war between the Realms is still raging, and past players' characters await - now is the time to get back into the game, and experience a new 'Dark Age of Camelot,'" said Jeff Hickman, executive producer for "Dark Age of Camelot." "Frequent upgrades, additions and response to community feedback mean that the game has been constantly improving. Plus, the addition of new 'Classic' servers lets players experience the rush of Realm vs. RealmTM combat without having to complete the 'Trials of Atlantis' to be competitive.""

  • All patched up.
The Camelot Herald has the details of the latest Dark Age of Camelot patch. Our calls to Buckingham Palace to confirm that Prince Charles wiggled his

ears and raised his eyebrows almost imperceptibly upon hearing the
    following were
    left unreturned:

"As our players know, the community in any online game is of paramount importance to enjoyable gameplay. The backbone of that community is contained in the player guilds and alliances in the game. As such, after discussions with our community, we have focused this patch on improvements and revisions to our player guild system. We also know that artifact durability and the availablity of single line respecs are a concern for our players. We have listened to your feedback on these issues and present new systems in these areas in this patch."

  • One on the go and two more on the way.
RPGVault has a Dark Age of Camelot: Darkness Rising interview with Walter Yarbrough, the expansion's producer posted. We remain unconvinced that NHL Hockey settlement talks were postponed
indefinitely upon realizing that they wrote this:

"In Mythic Entertainment's popular Dark Age of Camelot the noble ideals of chivalry, justice and honor no longer define daily life in the legendary community. After King Arthur's demise, the idyllic age characterized by the Knights of the Round Table has soon ended. Instead, three realms contend for supremacy. Albion is where the fabled city still stands. Its inhabitants are primarily humans such as Britons and Saracens, plus Half Ogres and Inconnu. Based on Irish themes and populated by races like the Celts, Firbolgs, Elves, Sylvan, Hibernia is a verdant area where many lean toward the magical arts. Norse-influenced Midgard lies to the north, frequently producing strong, hardy warriors. Trolls, Dwarves, Norsemen, Valkyn and others call it home. Each of these domains persistently seeks to assert itself through force of arms, and to capture the treasures held by the others."

  • Alternative rules. It sure does.
Dark Age of Camelot is going to deploy a new server type that has an "alternative" ruleset. Oh, we're pretty sure they wrote this:

"We are very pleased to announce our plan for the next server type for Dark Age of Camelot. We've made this decision based on your feedback from our polls and Herald feedback forms – thank you all for your passionate and detailed feedback on these issues.  "

  • The little game that could.Hexus has posted a review of Dark Age of Camelot: Catacombs. It's possible that they wrote this: "Catacombs is the latest in a line of expansion packs for the original game bringing more content, areas, classes and monsters to challenge the player. This time around, as the name suggests, Catacombs adds a whole raft of underground areas to the world, as well as bringing some new ideas to freshen up the game in general."
