Dark Age of Camelot arose as Everquest's first fantasy MMOG competitor two years after the reigning fantasy MMOG was released. Originally developed by Mythic, DAoC was scooped up by EA along with Mythic (now BioWare Mythic), making it part of the large EA conglomerate. When it was introduced, DAoC was considered to be very similar to Everquest in many ways, but eventually they shed that thought process and began to accumulate a popular following of their own.

Along with offering some incentives to alleviate camping spawn points, make customizable armor, and its enhanced graphics, the game's guiding principles capitalized on one gaming aspect many felt was absent in Everquest: truly integrated player vs. player (or "RvR" - realm vs. realm, in DAoC). PvP action, that has tangible impact in the virtual world.

DAoC introduced one other important technological element to the fantasy RPG scene: for lack of a better term we'll call it "dynamic zone loading." Everquest used what became known as a traditional zone architecture, splitting the world into small zones that must be loaded sequentially while gameplay is suspended. DAoC's "zones"- called regions- are extremely large swaths of terrain that load in a "bubble" around the player; in other words the game constantly loads while the player travels.

Dark Age of Camelot generates revenue through monthly subscriptions.

  • Hotfix Notes

The Camelot Herald has a note today on the latest hotfix.

In 1.68b, we added a turn-in for Thanes and Champions who activated the Shield of Khaos to get back a sellable version of the Shield of Khaos. This was done because these classes could not use large shields at the time. In 1.87, Thanes and Champions were given the ability to use large shields, making this turn-in obsolete. Because the Shield of Khaos can now be used by these two classes, the turn-in has been disabled.

  • Q&A with EA Mythic

WarCry has posted this interview with EA Mythic. It covers Dark Age of Camelot.

Our devs are dedicated to reviewing classes every patch, and looking for places where all classes need help. We don’t like to say what exactly is being looked at too far in advance, since things do tend to change, but we’re certainly not finished with class revamps yet. You’ll just have to keep an eye out for the notes on Pendragon, our test server.

  • Friday Hotfixes

The Camelot Herald has the notes for today's hotfixes for Dark Age of Camelot.

    - (PVP Ruleset) - Modified the mechanics of the Agramon encounter in the Labyrinth to prevent the mobs involved from fighting amongst themselves. This will prevent monsters from potentially getting credit for the kill and disrupting loot dispersal. Note: The issue only affected this encounter on the PVP server because of how monsters interact under that ruleset.

The Camelot Herald has posted a note today about some down time needed for their servers.

I'm really, really sorry for the short notice everyone. We're taking the servers down in fifteen minutes or so to fix a bug in which pets were being randomly set on 'passive'. We expect to be back up by 3:00 PM EST. Thanks so much for your patience in this matter, and as always keep an eye here for updates!

  • Roadtrip Roundtable

GamersInfo starts out the week with this article that takes a look at Dark Age of Comelot.

Crafting is undergoing a revamp. Starting with patch 1.88, crafting times were normalized, and many of the NPC's needed for crafting were centralized to areas of the game world where the crafting would be happening. The phrase repeated time and again, and not just in regards to crafting, is that the developers are trying to remove the frustration and "annoyance factor" of the game systems.
